Shelbourne FC notes a report in the media that the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has launched an investigation into the eligibility of a Wexford Youths WFC player’s appearance in the EVOKE.ie FAI Women’s Cup Final on Sunday.

We wish to confirm that Shelbourne FC has made no complaint to the FAI about this matter, nor do we intend to do so. In our opinion, while there may or may not have been an administrative error by Wexford Youths WFC in completing match day forms, we were beaten by the better team on the night and accept that defeat. We congratulate Wexford Youths on their victory.

We have a great Women’s National League side and are hugely proud of their performance and success in becoming Champions of Ireland this season. We look forward to participating in the UEFA Champions league next season and to further and bigger success in the future.

Shelbourne were unable to complete a league and cup double as they fell to a 3-1 defeat to Wexford Youths at Tallaght Stadium.

Lynn Marie Grant opened the scoring in the first half before Shels Ciara Grant responded with an equaliser. Kylie Murphy then gave her side the lead once again with Edel Kennedy later providing a two goal cushion.

The Women’s National League champions remained unchanged from last weeks 3-2 victory against their cup final opposition while Wexford Youth’s made two changes to their starting XI. Edel Kennedy returned as an outfield player after a stint between the sticks at Tolka Park with Ciamh Gray taking her place in goal. Lauren Dwyer was also selected ahead of Lynn Craven in defence.

The opening of the game was tense with neither side able to break each other down. Shelbourne looked to use their width with Jessie Stapleton and Jessica Ziu as their outlets out wide while Wexford Youths looked to win the ball in the midfield and counter the champions.

With both sides cancelling each other out, Stapleton and Ziu switched wings early in the first half as they looked to try and find more joy against the opposing full-backs.

Wexford player Ellen Molloy was first to test the keeper with a snapshot from range while Shels No.3 also struck an effort on target seconds later. Both were easily caught by the goalkeepers.

Rachel Graham was next to have a go at goal but her 25-yard strike went straight down the middle of the net with Gray readily collecting the ball.

Wexford Youths were first to strike when Shels captain Pearl Slattery was booked for a late challenge on Molloy. The resulting free kick was lifted into the box where Lynn Marie Grant was able to loop the ball over Amanda Budden. The No.1 was able to get a hand to the ball but was unable to claw it out from the top corner.

It wasn’t long before the champions responded when Ziu raced behind the defence striking the ball off the post. The ball fell to Ciara Grant inside the box with the No.12 equalising after lifting the ball over Gray’s head.

Rachel Graham was then subsequently handed a yellow card for a cynical foul, preventing a Wexford counter attack, with minutes remaining in the half.

At the start of the second half Wexford Youths retook their lead when Kylie Murphy fired a volley from inside the box. The No.6 was left unmarked as her shot flew into the bottom corner.

Things looked to have gone from bad to worse for Noel King when Budden went down holding her ankle not long after going behind. The ‘keeper received treatment and was able to stay on the pitch.

Saoirse Noonan then looked to make it 2-2 as she race in behind the oppositions back-line but an excellent recovering run from Orlaith Conlon saw her shot blocked by the defender. That would be Conlon’s final action of the game with her last ditch tackle injuring her in the process. She was replaced by No.11 Lynn Craven.

The Youths were forced into another change when goal scorer Grant limped off the field with Tegan Lynch coming on in her place.

Shelbourne then went further behind when Edel Kennedy’s curled effort hit the back of the net to double her sides lead. Kennedy later looked to close the game out but she was unable to convert her shot following the end of a promising counter.

Now chasing the game with ten minutes left, King turned to his bench with Abbie Larkin and Alex Kavanagh replacing Jess Gargan and Rachel Graham.

Ciara Rossiter was set through on goal but her chipped shot was inches over the crossbar with just minutes remaining in the cup final.

Molloy then had a chance to make it 4-1 when she raced onto a through ball but Ciara Grant was able to prevent the No.20 from getting a shot away. Wexford were then forced into a third change due to injury with Sinead Taylor taking the place of Molloy who limped off following the challenge.

Referee Paula Brady added six minutes onto the clock following the 90 minutes but Shels were unable to make a late comeback as Wexford Youths were crowned cup champions.

Shelbourne partners with Lusk United and Finglas United as Community Partners for Reds Together programme

  • Clubs will collaborate on several social based projects focusing on personal development of all members
  • Clubs are first two to join forces for Shelbourne’s community programme Reds Together

Shelbourne Football Club is delighted to announce Lusk United and Finglas United as the first Community Partner clubs of our Reds Together progamme.

As Community Partners, both clubs will collaborate on several social initiatives including complimentary match ticketing, sharing of coaching expertise, personal development workshops, player visits, event collaboration and much more.

Both areas are crucial for Shelbourne as we continue to grow our reach across Dublin and both clubs have long storied traditions within their own communities which reflect the brilliant clubs they continue to build.

The announcement is an extension of the Reds Together programme which has already included partnerships with The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, St Patrick’s Mental Health Services and the DDLETB for our specialised education course for young adults.

The education theme is continued with several personal development workshops planned as part of our education pillar in the Reds Together programme.

The partnership has already seen great success as over 150 Lusk United members attended a recent WNL game at Tolka Park and will do the same this Sunday at the FAI Women’s Cup Final.

Both Finglas United and Lusk United share the same values, volunteer ethos and commitment to developing their players as people first and players second as Shelbourne and we look forward to collaborating with them over the coming months.

John McGouran, Shelbourne FC Community Officer, said: “We are delighted to welcome Lusk United and Finglas United into our ‘Reds Together’ programme as Community Partners.

The values of both Clubs mirror those of Shelbourne: community focussed, a strong volunteer ethos and a commitment to developing their Club members as people first and players second. We look forward to working with Lusk United and Finglas United to deliver our ‘Reds Together’ Community Programme  to encourage participation in football across all ages and ability and to promote education and wellbeing initiatives within their respective Club and local community.

Steven Farrell, Executive Committee Member at Lusk United, said: “Lusk Utd are delighted to be linking up with Shelbourne FC under their new Reds Together Partnership. Our club and community are at the very heart of our focus since we established in 1969. Now with over 850 members and with a growing female section, the club are ready to take on a new challenge. This initiative is consistent with our vision that football can play an important role in our society. We look forward to strengthening our relationship with Shelbourne FC in the coming years as community partners.”

John Fox, Chairman at Finglas United, said: In 2015, two clubs WFTA Football Club and Mellowes B.D.S., that can trace their origins back to the road leagues of the 1950’s & 60’s and who together boast a combined history of over 100 years in the Finglas West area took the momentous decision to amalgamate from the 2015/16 season onwards and from then on would be known as Finglas United Youth and Football Club.

“For too many years clubs in the Finglas area had been competing against each other for resources and the area had not produced the levels of success that a hotbed of soccer like Finglas West should and our primary aim was to become The Local Football Club of choice by players, their families & supporters

“By providing an environment which encourages community and family involvement in a friendly atmosphere Finglas United look to continue this development and we are delighted to link up with newly promoted Shelbourne F.C. under their Reds Together Partnership Programme.

“The Reds Together Partnership Programme is an extension of our focus and aims in developing Finglas United within our community and we see this partnership with Shelbourne F.C. as compatible with our visions and aims and are delighted to become a community partner under the Reds Together Programme.

“We look forward to developing our relationship with Shelbourne F.C. over the coming seasons and are eager to work alongside the staff in Shelbourne F.C. and would like to thank John Mc Gouran for his work with us to date on this programme.”

Late drama in Women’s National League sees Shelbourne crowned champions

Shelbourne FC were crowned champions of the Women’s National League as they saw off Wexford Youths Women 3-2. A 5-2 win for Galway Women’s FC against Peamount United put the Reds top of the table on the final match day.

The Reds came into the game knowing anything but a win would end their title hopes, however even then, the Women’s National League title would not be guaranteed as they needed Peamount United to lose to Galway Women’s FC.

Shels started proceedings at Tolka Park with high energy and for the first fifteen minutes were matched by Wexford Youths women. Both sides moved the ball quickly and out of possession they were aggressive in winning it back.

Noelle Murray’s return to the starting XI proved positive as she picked out Saoirse Noonan with an excellent cross but the forward was unable to direct her effort on target.

Soon after, Murray threatened again as Chloe Mustaki and Jessie Stapleton linked up well on the left wing with the ball eventually falling to the No.10, although she was unable to test Edel Kennedy in the away sides goal.

The returning forward had another chance to open the scoring but her long range effort flew wide of the post.

Two minutes later, Stapleton found the net from a corner after Mustaki done well to force the set piece.

It wasn’t long before it was 2-0 to Shelbourne as Jessica Ziu raced into the box where she was fouled by Kennedy. The referee pointed to the spot and Murray made no mistake from 12-yards firing into the top corner.

The 2-0 lead did little for the Reds at this point as Peamount also lead by two in their respected fixture but when news of Galway equalising reached Drumcondra the mood around Tolka lifted.

Shels pushed on knowing they were actively doing the job they needed to do as Stapleton made it 3-0 at the start of the second half connecting with Jessica Gargan’s free-kick. Her second of the night providing a comfortable three goal advantage for the title hopefuls.

With 57 minutes played, Wexford pegged one back as Kylie Murphy raced into the box to get on the end of Ellen Molloy’s low cross.

With half an hour left to play, Galway took the lead prompting even louder cheers from the home support.

Stapleton continued to provide an outlet on the left wing as she looked for her hat-trick. First her shot in the 63rd minute looped just over the bar with the keeper beaten before later striking the bar with a thunderous strike inside the box.

Galway Women’s later scored a fourth and fifth placing the title in Shelbourne’s grasp as Noel King pushed his side to remain calm and hold on to their two goal cushion but a second goal from Wexford Youths in the 85th minute made it an uncomfortable finish for the home team as Sinead Taylor came off the bench to score from a corner.

Shelbourne remained composed and saw the game out with celebrations proceeding following the final whistle.

The quest for silverware does not stop there as the Reds travel to Tallaght Stadium next Sunday to take on the same opposition in the Evoke FAI Womens Cup final. Noel King will hope to see his side end the season with a league and cup double.

Shelbourne kept the pressure on the top of the Women’s National League table as they came out as 3-1 winners in a Dublin derby against Bohemians.

Jessica Ziu and Jessie Stapleton were both on the scoresheet as Noel King’s side took all three points at the Oscar Traynor centre.

Shelbourne looked sharper and fitter throughout the game as the hosts struggled to ever get a foothold across the 90 minutes. It was a dominant performance  from the first minute to the last from the Reds.

Chloe Mustaki started proceedings in Coolock heading off target from an early free kick. Her effort was judged offside by the linesmen in the end.

Moments before, Jessica Gargan had found joy down the right flank early on highlighting a point of weakness in the home-side.

Then in the 21st minute, Ziu had blitzed behind the defence on the right wing before poking the ball past Courtney Maguire to make it 1-0.

The goalscorer retained her threat in the second half as she once again got in behind but was unable to lift her chipped effort high enough to beat Maguire.

Soon after, Gargan, Ziu and Saoirse Noonan linked up well on the right wing. However, Noonan was unable to convert her shot at the end of the move.

Shels No.7 kept causing problems for the Bohemians left back and in the 58th, she was at the heart of her side’s second.

Ziu had found Ciara Grant on the edge of the box with the midfielders shot being blocked by the home team. However, the block deflected the ball into the path of Jessie Stapleton who curled the ball into the far corner.

The dominance continued from the Drumcondra side as Noonan found the net. Despite being two goals down Bohs retained a tight line and ultimately the goal was disallowed for offside.

The weather then picked up with the wind giving Bohemians an advantage and Lisa Murphy took it with both hands scoring from within her own half.

The defender caught Amanda Budden off guard as her audacious long range effort  was carried across the pitch by the wind to make it 2-1.

The away side regained their two goal lead just minutes later when Ziu pounced on a goalkeeping error to score her second of the game.

The final moments of the game was more of the same as Shelbourne remained in control. In the end it was comfortable win away from home.
