Dundalk 5(R.Robinson[og]14′, Kelly 22′, K.Byrne 49′, Towell[pen] 71′, Finn 79′)

Shelbourne 0

Report with thanks to www.fai.ie

There was to be no upset at Oriel Park as Dundalk swept away the challenge of Shelbourne to advance to the third round of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Senior Cup.

Things may been different had the visitors taken advantage of the glorious opportunity that came their way in the 11th minute when Alan O’Sullivan gathered a slack backpass by Paddy Barrett to run free on the Dundalk goal. However, with just Gabriel Sava to beat, the striker saw his effort drift wide.

Dundalk are not the kind of team that offer second chances and, by the 25th minute, they had this tie all but put to bed.

Shels paid dearly for O’Sullivan’s miss when Ryan Robinson headed into his own net in the 14th minute, Ronan Finn’s cross skidding off the head of the unfortunate Shels centre-back, completely deceiving Greg Murray.

Dundalk continued to press for a second goal and it arrived after a flurry of corners in the 22nd minute. Richie Towell picked the ball up on the right and found Jake Kelly who beat Murray with a pinpoint header.

It was another corner that led to the third goal in the 49th minute. Daryl Horgan’s delivery from the left was knocked on by Shane Grimes and Kurtis Byrne was on hand to finish at the back post.

The fourth goal arrived with 20 minutes to play. Substitute Ciaran O’Connor showed plenty of power to run Adam O’Connor in the inside left channel, drawing a foul from the Shels full-back and Towell made no mistake from the penalty spot.

O’Connor was also instrumental in the fifth, guiding a Sean Gannon cross to the far post for Ronan Finn to head home.

Dundalk:Gabriel Sava; Sean Gannon (David McMillan 81), Andrew Boyle, Paddy Barrett, Shane Grimes; John Mountney, Richard Towell (Chris Shields 75); Jake Kelly, Ronan Finn, Daryl Horgan (Ciaran O’Connor 64); Kurtis Byrne.

Subs not used: Paul Finnegan; Dane Massey; George Poynton; Gary Rogers.

Shelbourne:Greg Murray; Sean Heaney, Adam O’Connor (Darragh Gannon 78), Ryan Robinson, Evan Osam; Mark Sandford (Philly Hughes 71), Craig Walsh (Jake Donnelly 63), Daire Doyle, Colm Crowe, Dylan McGlade; Alan O’Sullivan.

Dundalk v Shelbourne

Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup – Round Two

Oriel Park – May 29th – KO 7.45pm

Shelbourne travel up the M1 on Friday night for their Second Round Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup game with Dundalk at Oriel Park. Kick-Off at the Carrickmacross Road venue is scheduled for 7.45pm.

Dundalk – last season’s winners and current leaders of the Premier Division of the SSE Airtricity League – defeated St. Patricks Athletic 2-0 at Richmond Park last Friday night, with two goals from Daryl Horgan.

While Dundalk were disposing of Pats on the banks of the Camac, Shelbourne were defeating Roddy Collins’s Waterford United 1-0 on the banks of the Tolka, courtesy of a penalty scored by Gareth Coughlan, which was awarded when Shels striker Philly Hughes was taken down in the area.

The last meeting of Dundalk and Shelbourne was at Oriel earlier this season (April 7th) in the EA Sports Cup, when, with both sides playing some fringe players, the home side came out on top, with a 1-0 win – the goal coming from John Mountney after 11 minutes.

Over the years, these two sides have met twenty times in the FAI Cup (including replays), Shelbourne winning on nine occasions, Dundalk on seven, with four draws. In these games, Shelbourne have scored a total of 36 goals, with Dundalk scoring 34.

Shelbourne go into Friday’s game, with a number of injuries Simon Dixon (out for the season), Jack Brady (leg), Dave Ryan (knee), and Conor Earley (knock received in Waterford game). Dylan McGlade in doubtful with a shin injury.

Shelbourne have no one suspended for this game.

Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town will, once again this year, visit Tolka Park as part of their preparation for the coming season.

This will be the third year in a row that ‘Town’ have played the Reds at the Drumcondra venue.

The trip to Ireland has been a constant during Mick’s tenure at Portman Road, and they will spend the week training here, finishing up with the game against Shels.

It is likely that their two signings from Shelbourne – Dylan Connolly and Adam McDonnell – will be part of the travelling party and play against their former colleagues.

The game is set for Saturday, July 11th, with kick-off scheduled for 3.00pm.

Ticket will be available later from www.tickets.ie

Further details will be posted over the next coupleof weeks.
