SHELBOURNE 1 (Conan Byrne pen 79′)

LONGFORD TOWN 0

Shelbourne recorded what could prove to be a massive win at Tolka Park on Friday night as they defeated second-placed Longford Town 1-0 to stretch their lead at the top of the table.

The first half was bereft of any real action, with a couple of chances for Longford’s Aaron Dobbs countering Ciaran Kilduff’s header off the post on six minutes. Dobbs should have given Longford the lead early into the second half after he was played through into the box.

However, his low shot was met by the fingertips of Colin McCabe in the Shels goal. Dean Byrne ran the show in the second half and should have put Longford in front in the 57th minute when a fine crossfield pass found him at the back post.

He completely sold Shels full-back Aidan Friel with a drag of the ball, but his attempt to finish into the top corner was way off target. The game changed in the 78th minute when a Lorcan Fitzgerald corner was not properly dealt with by the Longford defence or keeper.

The ball eventually ended up back at Fitzgerald who was taken out by substitute Peter Hopkins just inside the box. Up stepped veteran Conan Byrne to send Lee Steacy the wrong way and calmly slot the ball right into the bottom corner.

The visitors threw everything at Shels in the second half but the home team were fiercely determined and managed to hold on. A draw probably would have been the fair result but Ian Morris’ charges showed great resilience to grind out the win.

After his fifth league goal of the season last week against Cobh Ramblers, Ryan Brennan says this Shels team wants to “create our own legacy” at the club this season.

The Reds, who sit on top of the SSE Airtricity League First Division table, welcome second place Longford Town tomorrow to Tolka Park in a game the number 10 describes as “massive.”

His journey to Shels started after a holiday with team mate Karl Moore in Rome where he was put onto Shels boss Ian Morris, whom he talked to for an hour and whose plans for the club Brennan soon realized he “wanted to be apart of.”

“Whether it’s winning the league, promotion we know we will give 100% until the very end,” Brennan told shelbournefc.ie.

Since coming to Tolka Park, the attacking-midfielder, who has also played up front, says he has been impressed by the squad around him, enjoying partnerships with those around him. “Not just our one to eleven, but the lads who come on then from the bench have real quality. We now we haven’t really played that well in the last couple of games but we’re still grinding out results, showing that doggedness which shows the quality we have around the place,” he says.

The seasons efforts have also been helped by the younger players in the squad who Brennan believes are “really talented” and “could go anywhere in the game.”

Originally from Drogheda, Brennan says the First Division has been “overlooked” in recent years but thinks the competitiveness this year has taken people on the outside by surprise. “On any given day, any team can beat anyone, which just goes to show the strength in the division,” he says.

Brennan feels the Reds were unlucky to lose in Longford last time, with himself having a ball cleared off the line with ten minutes to go but he says the “breaks even themselves out over the season.” Still, he says the team is “fully focused” on the job at hand tomorrow where they will be hoping for another strong crowd at Tolka Park, which he says he “thrives on.”

“I’ve preferred it since the fans have come closer to the pitch, they’ve become the 12th man, any support is helpful and if the head is down they will keep you going,” he says.

“At the very start, we said we wanted to win the league, and we’ve got a busy period coming up now where we will be looking for three points, game by game, just keep chipping away and give 100% every week,” he says.

Grabbing important goals so far this season, Brennan says he has joked with team mate Ciaran Kilduff over the scoring charts, but remains impressed by the whole team’s efforts to work well together and focus on the teams one goal: promotion. “We’re doing well and long may it continue,” he says.

Our thoughts are with his wife, Breda, and his family and friends. He’ll be missed in Tolka Parkand we will be observing a minute’s silence in his honour before our game against Longford Town on Friday night.

WEXFORD 1 (Jack Doherty 89′)

SHELBOURNE 2 (Aidan Friel 16′, Dayle Rooney 83′)

A goal in each half from Aidan Friel and Dayle Rooney earned Shelbourne the points against Wexford FC in their SSE Airtricity League First Division match in Ferrycarrig Park.

Jack Doherty pulled a goal back for the hosts late on, with his sixth of the campaign, but they couldn’t manage to pull off the great escape.

The Reds made most of the early running, with James English turning well in the sixth minute and forcing a save out of Corey Chambers, while the following up Derek Prendergast saw his shot graze the top of the crossbar.

The visitors did get their noses in front in the 17th minute but the goal had a touch of good fortune about it. A clever touch from James English sent Aidan Friel in the clear, he hared down the right wing and his attempted cross deceived Chambers and ricocheted in off the left-hand post.

Shels threatened to add to their advantage, with Ryan Brennan seeing his shot deflected out for a corner and Luke Byrne heading straight at the goalkeeper, but in fairness to the hosts they didn’t let their heads drop and finished the first-half well, with Chris Kenny heading a Jack Doherty corner off target and the latter curling a free-kick narrowly wide.

Dayle Rooney had a couple of sights of goal early in the second half, first volleying wide of the left upright and then forcing Chambers into a full length save to tip his free-kick around the post.

Wexford captain Chris Kenny brought a save out of Colin McCabe in the 76th minute, but he shot straight at the netminder after being teed up by Emmet Nugent.

Shelbourne sealed the deal in the 83rd minute when Ciaran Kilduff pounced on a defensive error and squared to Dayle Rooney, who finished to the net.

Wexford gave themselves a glimmer of hope in the 89th minute when Danny Doyle whipped in a brilliant cross from the right wing and Jack Doherty headed it to the net.

Having broken into the Shels starting lineup with a string of impressive performances, midfielder Daniel McKenna says he has loved playing at Tolka Park where “the crowds really drive us on.”

Attendances at Tolka Park are up 36% compared to this time last year, and the Reds have an impressive home record since their defeat to Cabinteely at the start of the season.

“The fans at the home games have been really good recently. We had a mixed start to the season, and we’ve been giving them something to shout about there now. Some of the away games can be quieter but the support has been really good,” he says.

Shels lost 1-0 last week despite dominating the game away to Cabinteely with a penalty miss, woodwork being hit twice and numerous chances. McKenna, though, appreciated the support the players received after the match.

“If you weren’t at the match you wouldn’t have realized what happened in it, and the fans were there to cheer us off at the end which makes us feel that little bit better about it,” he says. “I suppose that’s one of the positives along with the chances we created.”

McKenna has played with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bray Wanderers in recent years and the Shels number 16 says he has enjoyed “the professional nature” of the Shels set up. “When I arrived I didn’t go straight into the team, had to work for it, and that’s because of the quality in the team and the standards that have been set from management.”

McKenna has formed a partnership with Oscar Brennan in central midfield, one where he has enjoyed “being given the licence to push on” and express himself creatively. “Oscar knows his role and he is really good at it. We are developing that understanding where I sit if he goes forward and he sits when I go up.” He describes the group as “a tight knit group of lads” and a dressing room all the players are “close on and off the pitch.”

When asked on his ambitions for the season, it’s simple, he says: “to win the league.” The SSE Airtricity League First Division has been remarkably tight this year with the Reds sitting in third position behind Longford Town and Cabinteely who play each other this weekend.

“I knew it was going to be a tough division, but the lads have even said it has improved a lot this season. We were favorites going into it, and we’re in third, so it just goes to show how competitive it is.” he says. “We know we didn’t start off too well, but we have dusted ourselves off and given the fans something to cheer about. It’s a two way thing I suppose, we need them and they us to deliver.”
