Shelbourne FC 2 (Keegan 22′, Coughlan 35′)

Galway FC 4 (Walsh 3′, Conneely 26′, 52′, Keegan 65′)

By Michael Fay

Galway ended Shelbourne’s unbeaten league record on Friday night in front of the President of Ireland, hitting the reds net four times as they ran out 4-2 winners in the SSE Airtricity First Division.

The presidents team went one nil up straight away, when good play down the left from Galway, Derek O’Brien swung an inviting cross into the Shels box, Reds keeper Greg Murray came to collect the ball, lost out to the returning Stephen Walsh, his header looked to have been cleared off the line but assistant Paula Brady signalled for a goal, the visitors had taken a lead after just three minutes. The Tribesmen worked extremely hard early on, putting extreme pressure on Shelbourne when they were in possession.

It took Shelbourne some time to settle down, after seven minutes though they put together a lovely move down the left hand side, a neat interchange between Philip Hand, Gareth Coughlan and Conor Murphy almost got the home side in behind the Galway defence but it wasn’t to be this time.

Shels had their first shot on target after twenty three minutes, and what a strike, Jordan Keegan chesting a pass around the Galway defender to then hit a rocket from twenty five yards out left Conor Gleeson with no chance going in off the post, bringing a smile to the Shelbourne faithful and President Michael D. Higgins.

Those smiles didn’t last long, barely a couple of minutes later, a Galway corner bounced around the area and Martin Conneely was on hand to head home, the visitors had restored their lead which they had squandered for all of two minutes. Tommy Dunne’s men nearly doubled their lead straight away when right back Marty Owens hit a half volley from thirty yards out just dipping over the bar.

Shels huffed and puffed but couldn’t find the final, the passing was crisp but there was a lack of movement if front of the midfielders as Keegan and Coughlan tried to pick the lock.

The home side needed something special, and after thirty four minutes, Gareth Coughlan produced that with a stunning free kick more than twenty five yards from goal beating Gleeson hitting the same post as the first goal and creeping over the line.

Galway came out in the second half the better team, with Captain Paul Sinnott dictating the game alongside the impressive Ryan Connolly. They took the lead just after the half time break when Martin Conneely doubled his tally for the evening with another header from a corner losing his marker Lee Murtagh to restore the away sides lead.

The game was sealed moments later when substitute Jake Keegan struck an absolute beauty from twenty yards on the half volley beating Greg Murray all ends up.

With just ten minutes left it could have been worse for Shels as Ryan Connolly broke through the reds defence tried a lob just to it could have wrapped up what was an excellent performance from the Tribesmen.

Shels had a late rally with Gareth Coughlan going close twice, but it wasn’t to be for the league leaders.

Johnny McDonnell will be disappointed in the manner his side conceded all four goals, especially the first 3 all coming from crosses, but can have no complaints about the final result, the better team won in Tolka, no doubt about that.

Finn Harps 1 (Keating)

Shelbourne 1 (Desmond)

Report courtesy of TheLOIblog

By

Finn Harps and Shelbourne played out a hugely entertaining 1-1 draw on a cold but dry Friday night in Finn Park, Ballybofey courtesy of second half goals from Lee Desmond for the visitors and an equaliser from on-loan Harps youngster Ruairi Keating.

In a dull first half, neither side looked like producing much in the way of entertainment for the 500 people in attendance. However, on 15 minutes, the game was blasted wide open with the dismissal of Josh Mailey for a high challenge on Dylan Cashin in the middle of the field, his second red card of the season against Shelbourne. Both players went for the ball in a 50/50 challenge, but Maileys foot was raised to head height of his opposite number, leaving referee Adriano Reale with no option but to brandish the red card to the Harps midfielder.

On the stroke of half time, Shels almost hit the front, as a Phillip Hand cross was met by the head of Cashin, and his effort rebounded off the post in the town end of the ground, much to the relief of the home crowd.

Half time saw Harps ring an important change in the outcome of the match, as Thomas Bonner was introduced in place of Sean McCarron, who was largely ineffective in left-midfield after his superb performance the week previous in Galway.

Only three minutes into the second half though, Shelbourne took the lead through Lee Desmond, as his cross somehow managed to sneak it’s way over the line despite the best efforts of Harps goalkeeper Shaun Patton, spotted only by the linesman, who awarded the goal after a bit of a scramble in the Harps box.

This sparked a bit of life into the game, and Harps were put under a bit of pressure for the following minutes as Shelbourne decided to go all out for the win.

On 60 minutes, the Harps support were given a huge boost with the return of veteran striker Kevin McHugh to the frame and his impact was immediate. Between the class of McHugh, and the immense battling and last ditch tackles being made by Tommy Bonner in the midfield, Harps found their opening back into the game.
A long ball from the back split open Shels centre back pairing of Gannon and O’Connor to which Ruairi Keating latched onto, upon turning the in-rushing Simon Dixon, Keating curled a beautiful left-footed strike into Greg Murrays goal, despite the fingertip effort of Murray to push the ball away to level the scores.

Both sides really upped the ante from here on, with entertainment levels soaring through the old tin roof in Finn Park.

Shelbourne had separate long range efforts from Darren Tinnelly and Keith Quinn fizzle agonisingly close of the Harps post, leaving hearts firmly in the mouths of Harps support, Quinns in particular looking like it was soaring straight into the roof of the Harps net before

Harps also had a great opportunity missed from a Kevin McHugh corner, as Packie Mailey rose highest in the box, only to see his headed attempt sail just wide of the post.

Just two minutes later, Harps again came close through a McHugh corner, as Damien McNulty headed back across the Shelbourne box, before the Shels defence finally cleared through Gannon as Ruairi Keating was about to pounce on the loose ball.

In the end, it was a deserved point for a battling Harps side, while Shelbourne can also feel slightly aggrieved not to have put the game to bed before Harps got their all important equaliser.

Shels remain top of the league ahead of Galway FC and Longford, while Harps rise to fifth position, with fourth placed Wexford to come next week for Ollie Horgans men in Ferrycarraig Park.

Finn Harps v Shelbourne

SSE Airtricity League – First Division

Finn Park – Fri, May 23rd – KO 8.00pm

Shelbourne travel to Ballybofey for the first time since July 2011, to play Finn Harps in the Series 12 game of the SSE Airtricity League, Division One game. Kick-off at Finn Park is scheduled for 8.00pm.

Shelbourne played Colin Hawkins’ Shamrock Rovers ‘B’ side last Friday in Tolka Park, with the sides coming away with a point a piece after a 0-0 draw. Shels didn’t get going at all in the opening half, having the majority of possession but unable to break through the well set up Rovers’ defence. A brighter Shelbourne side started the second half and firstly Lee Murtagh and then Willo McDonagh could have put Shels in front. The game then settled back to the first half pattern until Shelbourne upped the pressure in the last 20 minutes and were, maybe, unlucky not to score from a number of shots on target, principally from Gareth Coughlan and skipper Brian Gannon, who skied his shot when unopposed on the six yard line.

Finn Harps, at the same time, earning themselves a great draw ay Eamonn Deacy Park against Galway, the home side grabbing a goal in the 90th minute, after Harps had hels on to a 1-0 lead from the 56th minute, even though they were playing with ten men – Caoimhin Bonner having seen red on the half-hour.

Earlier in the season, Shelbourne defeated Finn Harps 2-0, with goals from Gareth Coughlan and Keith Quinn (pen).

After the game with Rovers, Shelbourne Manager Johnny McDonnell said he was “disappointed that we didn’t grind out a one nil win. Just a few things didn’t work for us tonight. The boys are all disappointed up there. They expect and the want – that’s the standard we ask of them, to win every match, they gave everything that they could give.”

On the return of Jordan Keegan, McDonnell again “It was good to get Jordan on. He definitely makes the difference for us, the way we want to play”

On the injury front, it seems that Friday’s game just comes too early for John Sullivan and he will continue to get treatment from the physio team. Jordan Keegan was back in action for the final fifteen minutes of the game with Rovers and should, once again, be in action in Donegal.

Absent on International duty will be Dylan Connolly and Ryan Robinson.

Finn Harps wish to advise supporters that Friday night’s SSE Airtricity LeagueFirst Division fixture v Shelbourne will be segregated and separate entrances will be in operation for home and away fans.

Harps supporters are requested to enter by Navenny Street entrance only, while Shelbourne fans are asked to enter by Chestnut Road entrance only. The club would therefore appeal to those attending to arrive at ground early to prevent bottleneck situations as kick-off time approaches.
