Republic of Ireland 2 Georgia 2
THE Republic of Ireland U17 side finished their UEFA Championships Elite Qualifying Round fixtures with a 2-2 draw with Georgia in Belgrade today.
Tom Mohan’s side exit the tournament pleased to pick up a point after unfortunate defeats against Serbia and Germany but disappointed not to return with all three points from this fixture.
Ireland led 2-0 with five minutes left but in the testing 27C heat they were caught by two late Georgian strikes and had to settle for a share of the spoils.
Nathan Corkery had headed Ireland in front in the 23rd minute when he got his head to a Tom Holland corner.
Georgians keeper Beka Kurdadze did well to keep out an effort from Irish skipper Georgie Poynton inn the 43rd minute.
Irish keeper Matthew Connor had to be sharp to keep out an effort from Bela Mikeltadze in the 53rd minute but it was the Irish who looked to have taken control and produced extended spells of impressive play.
Mohan’s side looked to have sealed the victory in the 75th minute when Shelbourne’s Adam McDonnell produced a stunning strike from 25-yards to fire home after good work by Holland, Anto Breslin and Conor Masterson in the build-up. [Adam is number 6 in photo above]
Unfortunately for the Irish Georgia pulled one back just two minutes later when Giorgi Kiknadze smashed home from distance and then two minutes into injury-time the game was levelled when Irakli Kamladze finished off a counter-attack by slipping the ball under the advancing Connor.
Shane Elworthy was unfortunate not to snatch a dramatic winner for Ireland less than a minute later but keeper Kurdadze made a block and the ball was cleared to safety.
“The result probably sums up the week for us because the players definitely deserved to win the game. The first half display was brilliant – they played really well and created numerous chances,” said Mohan.
“We should have won a penalty in the first half but decisions have not gone our way this week. When we got the second half goal from Adam McDonnell it looked like we might get the result we deserved.
“Unfortunately the heat got to us and the boys wilted. It wasn’t a lack of effort, can’t blame them for the work they put in.
“Despite that we had a shot cleared off the line deep into injury-time. That’s life. The boys put in a very good performance against a good Georgia side. They’re a country producing good players.”
Serbia drew with Germany in the other game in Group Six. The Germans will top the group to progress to the final in Malta and Mohan believes his side showed up well in a very testing group.
“It was a very difficult group overall but the injustice of the first night was the most difficult thing to take this week,” he said.
“The boys played really well. It’s been a hell of an experience for them. They’ve witnessed the cruelty of the game but they can be proud of they performed.
“It’s been a tough week but I could have asked more from the players and staff who all worked extremely hard.”
It was a stalemate in Tallaght Stadium on Sunday afternoon when old Ringsend foes Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne played out a 1-1 draw in their first ever meeting in the First Division. Brian Gannon’s goal cancelled out Daniel Purdy’s superb strike for the Hoops but neither side could find a winner in a hectic closing period.
On a sticky pitch showing signs of wear and tear from recent football and rugby matches, there were few clear cut chances in the first half. Shels did force a couple of early corners but it was the Rovers attack that had the best opportunities in the opening period.
Chris Lyons, playing just behind Rovers first teamer Karl Sheppard, dragged a shot wide seven minutes into the game. Hoops boss Colin Hawkins also had two former Shels players in Rob Cornwall and Robert Bayly in his starting line who were released from Trevor Croly’s squad for this specific game. It was Cornwall who needed to be on his toes to stop Conor Murphy getting onto Jordan Keegan’s excellent pass on 18 minutes.
Shelbourne couldn’t exploit the chances they did create in the first half. Keith Quinn and Bayly were enjoying their tussle in centre midfield and both went into referee Jim McKell’s book. Quinn’s pass gave Lee Murtagh an early sight of goal but he blazed over the Rovers bar when he had more time than he thought.
The best chance of the half fell to the Hoops. Karl Sheppard brought the very best out of Shels’ goalkeeper Greg Murray who had to go full stretch to touch Sheppard’s shot from 30 yards out for a corner. This began a bit of battle between the ‘keeper and striker. Sheppard’s next shot as he got by Willo McDonagh required Murray to gather low to his feet, before he then had to race out of his penalty area to head the ball clear with Sheppard in close attendance.
The Hoops hit the ground running in the second half and hit the bar two minutes into the second period as Ryan Coombes headed Kevin Knight’s cross against the Shelbourne crossbar. Sheppard then had his own headed chance as he got on the end of Nathan Browne’s cross as the right back got up to support the Rovers attack.
Daniel Purdy has been the standout player for Rovers’ B team so far this season. While he had a quiet first half his goal, on 55 minutes had the small home crowd on their feet. Chris Lyons had done well to hold the ball up in the box with his back to goal. Bayly got on to it and pushed a pass into Purdy’s path and he ran at the Shelbourne defence. He faked a shot, took it on further and then with the outside of his foot from the edge of the area curled it into the top corner of the goal.
It took a brilliant save by Murray just after the hour mark to prevent his team going two down to the Hoops. Reacting to Kevin Knight’s header directed back across the goal, the ‘keeper swiped a hand out to somehow save after good work from Lyons and Browne again on the right.
Rovers were made pay for not converting those chances on 67 minutes when Jordan Keegan’s excellent run and shot in the box was parried by Conor O’Malley. The ball fell nicely to Brian Gannon on the edge of the Rovers six yard box and he made no mistake to equalise.
Both teams went in search of the winner in the final quarter of the game. Purdy’s defensive splitting pass towards Sheppard required a great defensive touch by Adam O’Connor to take the ball off Sheppard’s toe. Alan Kehoe then collected Lyon’s deep cross and his centre was headed goalwards by Coombes but was saved. Sheppard’s cross with the outside of his right boot was spilled by Murray but Adam O’Connor was in a good position to clears
Shels’ late pressure required O’Malley to save from Dylan Connolly but they really should been in front when Murtagh pounced on a Rovers defensive mistake. One on one with the goalkeeper though and he couldn’t convert after O’Malley closed him down very quickly.
The draw puts Shels into second place in the table on goal difference just behind Finn Harps while Hawkins’ Hoops must await their first win in the First Division campaign, having drawn three of their four games to date.

Shamrock Rovers ‘B’ v Shelbourne
SSE Airtricity League – First Division
Tallaght Stadium – Mar 30th – KO 3.00pm
Shelbourne will travel to Tallaght Stadium on Sunday, for their first game against Shamrock Rovers ‘B’ in Division One of the SSE Airtricity League. Kick-off at Tallaght is 3.00pm.
Shelbourne go into Sunday’s game on 7 points from three games, having had two wins (Wexford Youths 2-0; Longford Town 0-1) and a draw (Waterford United 3-3), while Shamrock Rovers ‘B’ have 2 points with two draws (Cobh Ramblers 1-1; Galway FC 0-0) and a loss (Finn Harps 0-3).
Shelbourne’s last game was against Waterford United on Friday last, when they led 2-0 at half-time, only to be pulled back to level terms on 69 minutes. A late goal from Stephen McDonnell on 86 minutes seemed to have the three points tied up for the Reds, only for an unfortunate own goal from Lee Murtagh on 93 minutes allowing the visitors to travel home with their third draw from three games.
After the Waterford game, Shelbourne Assistant Manager, Mick Byrne gave his thoughts “I thought we were cruising in the first half. Second half, we sat a little bit deep and Waterford came and gave it a go, but I thought we were strong enough to go and win the game, but we were unfortunate with the last minute own goal. Otherwise we would have had nine points from three games.”
On Sunday’s game against Rovers, Byrne said “Its early days in the league and most teams won’t know some of the players in the opposition teams. On Sunday, even though we have watched the Rovers side we will not know, until we see the team sheet, whether they will have some players from their first team. We can only worry about ourselves and we’ve been doing quite well, in games and in training, and we’ll have sorted a few issues from the last game during the week in training.”
Shelbourne have no suspensions for the game and all players have a clean bill of health, which gives manager Johnny McDonnell a full squad to select from.

Hi Robbie
Just a quick to thank you for setting up the half time match at yesterday’s Shels match. We were made feel very welcome and I think you might have a few new recruits to the fan club!
The kids had a fantastic time and are all still on a high this morning!
They had a 2-2 draw in the cup this morning which was great considering they were playing a team from a division higher and were out late last night.
Thanks again and best of luck for the rest of the season.
Kind Regards
