Letterkenny Rovers 0

Shelbourne 2 (Aaron Ashe [pen], Aaron ‘Red’ Robinson)

After last week’s winat home toFinn Harps, the 19’s travelled north to Letterkenny Rovers’ Lechview Park complex.

Manager Martin Murray waswithout afew players for this outing – Sean McGrane, who got a three match suspension for his red card last week and both George Mukete and Paddy Obijuru who were injured – and also the surprise departure of Adam Farrell to Drogheda United.

The Lechview Park was a credit to Letterkenny, but it was narrow and not very long and didn’t help Shels get into their stride, butstill theydominated the first half without really creating much, nearest being Stephen Confrey hitting the post on 39 mins, with a super turn. Half time arrived withthe score0–0.

Shels came flying out of the blocks for the second half, upped the tempo and started moving the ball from side to side and opening up Letterkenny, eventually being rewarded in the 62nd minute when centre forward Stephen Confrey was awarded a penalty, having been upended when just about to pull the trigger to score. Aaron Ashe stepped up and coolly put the keeper the wrong way to make to 1–0 to Shels,Aaron’s third goal in two games.

Fromthen on it was all one way traffic, with Shels dominating the game and creating chance after chance, withAaron Robinson, Stephen Confrey and Aaron Ashe unlucky not to score. Eventually the points were wrapped up in the 88th minute, when a flowing move resulted inthe ballbeing laid back to Aaron ‘Red’ Robinson and from a full 30 yards hehit a screamer to the top corner to score his first goal for the Under 19’s.

This result moves Shels up to4th place in the league at this early stage, three points behind pace-setters Derry City and Dundalk and a point behind St Patrick’s Athletic.

With no game next weekend because of Inter-Provincial Competition, the next game up for Murray’s crew is on Saturday 11th October vs Drogheda United at Tolka Park with a 12 noon kick-off.

Shelbourne Team: Eric Donnelly, Eoghan Dempsey, Andrew Ward, Gavin Kearney, Darragh Gannon, Aaron ( Red ) Robinson, David Pakenham, Aaron Robinson ( Capt ), Aaron Ashe, Stephen Confrey and Ahu Obhakhan.

FINN HARPS 3 (Nulty 40′, Funston 64′, 87′)

SHELBOURNE 2 (Coughlan 32′, Connolly 70′)

Report courtesy of extratime.ie

by Chris McNulty

Ollie Horgan’s side have left Shelbourne’s title hopes dangling by a thread and it seems that, barring a massive collapse, even by their own standards, that Longford Town – now four points clear – will take the automatic route back to the Premier Division with Johnny McDonnell’s Shels heading for the play-offs.

For Harps, it was a night that saw them produce one of their best displays of the season and the manner of Funston’s two goals will have pleased them considerably ahead of their FAI Cup semi-final against St Patrick’s Athletic next weekend.

After Damien McNulty cancelled out Gareth Coughlan’s opener for Shels, the sides went in level at the break, but Fuston fired Harps in front in the 64th minute, brilliantly riffling to the net at the back post following a lethal breakaway down the left channel.

Ciaran Coll’s industry saw him steal a march on Adam O’Connor, but it was Gareth Harkin’s overhead ball across goal that caught Shelbourne napping and Funston crashed home.

Shelbourne, needing a win to keep the pressure on top-of-the-table Longford – who won 2-0 away to Waterford United – turned the screw and Dylan Connolly levelled twenty minutes from the end when he got clear and slid under Harps ‘keeper Conor Winn.

There were signs that Shelbourne were wobbling when goalkeeper Nathan Murphy fumbled a cross by Kevin McHugh while Gareth Harkin’s drilled shot was held by the youngster.

However, Harps won it in style on 87 minutes as Funston magnificently curled past Murphy, via the inside of his right-hand post, to the delight of the majority of the 404 attendance, a week out from Harps’ biggest game in some time.

Funston’s second, the match-winner, ensured that for the first time since April 2012, Harps had come from behind to win.

Shelbourne arrived in Ballybofey with quite the injury list, their absentees including Darren Tinnelly, Willo McDonagh, Keith Quinn, Gregg Murray, Brian Gannon, Simon Dixon, Ryan Robinson and Robbie Gaul.

The title-chasers, with news filtering through that Longford were leading in Waterford, hit the front on 32 minutes when Coughlan pounced on Thomas McMonagle’s hesitancy, the defender getting caught under a high ball.

Coughlan zipped in close to the byline and he fired to the far end of Winn’s net when he found himself with only the ‘keeper to beat.

Harps drew level five minutes before the break. Still gasping after O’Connor, just back from a suspension, headed off his own crossbar when Coughlan chopped Funston down, Shelbourne were all at sea when McHugh floated over a corner and McNulty finished emphatically.

For the second home game in a row, McNulty got on the scoresheet, ghosting in round the back and firing past the out-of-position Murphy from the righthand side of the penalty box.

There was a major worry for Shelbourne in the 53rd minute when Gary Dempsey was forced off with what looked like a nasty knee injury, the experienced midfielder twisting awkwardly and writhing in agony before he left the action.

The home side had their chances earlier, but Josh Mailey dipped an effort just over from 20 yards and McHugh had everything right bar the finish on the half hour when he jinked across the edge of the area before shooting over the top.

John Sullivan tried his luck for Shelbourne, but he failed to catch Winn out with a lob just before the break and Harps could sense the game was theirs when Funston powered in his first midway through the second half.

Connolly got in after a rare lapse by Keith Cowan and he got clear of Packie Mailey to coolly finish, just after the same player had shot wide from a promising move.

Harps looked to be heading for a twelfth draw of a stalemate-laden campaign, but Funston delightfully finished to give Harps the win, handing Shels a first League defeat since July 5 and in the process putting a massive dent in their title hopes.

Following their defeat (1-2) at home to Dundalk in the first week of competition, the Reds have won thier next two – 1-0 away to Longford Town and 5-0 at home to Finn Harps. The lads are looking to make it three wins on the trot – with Letterkenny Rovers in the crosshairs.

Letterkenny Rovers are without a win so far this season, though Manager Martin Murray and the Shelbourne players will be well aware that this is the time that the home team will be hurting and will be doing everything intheir power to get ‘one over’ on the ‘name’ visitors.

We are aware that there are a number of Shelbourne supporters staying over for the weekend following Friday’s game in Ballybofey – why not come along to Leckview Park at 2pm on Sunday and lend your support to the lads. Shelbourne 5 (A.Robinson [capt], D.Gannon, A.Ashe 2, E.Dempsey)

Finn Harps 0

After last week’s win in Longford, the 19s were back on home soil hoping to follow up with another winagainst Finn Harps and Martin made six changes with three players (Eric Donnelly, Aaron Red Robinson and Eoghan Dempsey) making their debuts and again Martin gave youth the opportunity with only four U19’s, -fielding five U18s and two U17s.

Shels started well, creating early chances and unfortunately in the 12min Sean McGraine got himself Red carded for retaliating in a tackle, but instead of been a set back, Shels stayed positive and Martin carried on playing a 4 – 3 – 2 and in the 34 min from a roving attack down the right side the ball was played to Captain Aaron ( Robbo ) Robinson and from 25 yard he found the net with a thunder of a shot, and this is how the first half finished.

What a second half exhibition of football by this Shels we were shown. In the 58th minute, from a corner half cleared by Harps, left full Luke Doyle retrieved the ball and crossed with his right foot to the back post were Darragh Gannon out jumped the Harps defense to power a header to the net. We only had to wait another nine minutes for some excellent team play finished to the net by sub Aaron Ashe.

In the 75 minute Eoghen Dempsey won the back in his own back line and went up the line past two defenders and set up Aaron Ashe who had his shot saved by the keeper only for young Dempsey to carry on his run and finish to the net and give Shels a 4-0 lead. But Shels weren’t finished there and a back pass to the Harps keeper, was read by Ashe and he won the tackle with the keeper to walk the ball into the net on the 87 minute to round off a superb second half performance that we had to count the numbers – as Shels looked like the had the extra player.

Next up for this young Shels side is a trip to play Letterkenny next Sunday 28th September. Team; Eric Donnelly, Eoghan Dempsey, Darragh Gannon, Gavin Kearney, Luke Doyle, ( Dylan Grimes ) , Aaron Red Robinson ( David Pakenham ), Aaron Robinson Captain, Sean McGraine, Ahu Obhakhan ( Adam Farrell ), Stehpen Confrey ( Paddy Obijuru ), Andy Gorman ( Aaron Ashe ).

Subs; not used Jack Brady and Armstrong Bekombo.

Red Card; Sean McGraine

Shelbourne 3 (Dempsey 11′, Keegan 34′, Connolly 78′)

Shamrock Rovers ‘B’ 2 (Sanford 86′, 89′)

Report courtesy of extratime.ie

by Niall Farrell

One goal was the difference at Tolka Park tonight, as Shelbourne beat Shamrock Rovers B 3-2 to keep their promotion charge on track.

Shels were 3-0 up with five minutes left in the match through goals from Gary Dempsey, Jordan Keegan and Dylan Connolly.

Rovers substitute Mark Sandford was the cutting edge his side had lacked for most of the match though, and scored a brace in the dying minutes to leave the score at 3-2.

Dempsey hit a perfect free-kick on 11 minutes, leaving Rovers ‘keeper Michael Kelly marooned as the ball sailed past the wall and into the top-right corner of the goal.

That goal was well-deserved after a good start from Shels, but after it the home side became complacent. Rovers B had most of the ball for large periods of the first half, but couldn’t create any chances.

Even when Greg Murray’s botched clearance from the Shels goal on 25 minutes looked like it had presented the Hoops with a goal, Chris Lyons was fended off by Lee Desmond.

That failure to punish Shels came back to haunt Rovers on 34 minutes, when Jordan Keegan doubled the score. Dylan Connolly and Keegan broke together from midfield after a Hoops attack, and Keegan slotted the ball calmly past Kelly.

Rovers had their first real chance of the before the break, with Daniel Purdy’s low free-kick from just outside the Shels box forcing a fine save out of an outstretched Greg Murray.

A lengthy stoppage while Murray was treated for an injury meant it took a while for the match to get into any sort of rhythm again in the. Shels were again sloppy on the ball, but still Rovers weren’t able to take advantage.

On 77 minutes, Rovers defender Maxime Veuille clumsily brought down Jodan Keegan when the latter was through on the Hoops goal. Veuille was sent off for this offence, and the resulting penalty was duly dispatched by Dylan Connolly.

The late stages of the match saw the relatively toothless Rovers again enjoy more time on the ball, but still they didn’t seem to be able to make any sort of dent on the scoreline.

That is, until Mark Sandford struck a low, powerful shot from about 30 yards out on 86 minutes. It was a wonder goal, but it seemed destined to be no more than a consolation.

But substitute Sandford had other plans, and popped up three minutes later to slide in another goal after some poor defending from Shels. It made for a nervy last few minutes for Shelbourne, but they were able to see out the match for a 3-2 win.
