SHELBOURNE 4 (Shane Farrell 8′, Derek Prendergast 31′, 74′, David O’Sullivan 85′)

WEXFORD FC 1 (Dean Kelly 51′)

Shels, looking for their first home win in a month, started brightly and in particular Adam Evans who looked threatening right from the off.

And it was this particular avenue in which got the home side in front after just eight minutes. Evens showed tremendous pace to round Liam McCartan, but his low cross was turned behind. From Cian Kavanagh’s resulting corner Shane Farrell nodded home, but there will be questions of just how much he knew of it as it seemed to go in off the back of his head!

Home fans thought they had doubled their lead when Lorcan Fitzgerald whipped in a dangerous free kick, only for Alan Byrne to see his header go millimetres wide as the home side began to exert their dominance.

The home side deservedly doubled their lead in the 33rd minute. Left-back Fitzgerald again whipped in a cross from the left wing and up rose Prendergast like a salmon to head back across goal and in off the post.

Wexford, who had an encouraging draw against Finn Harps last time out, did look a threat in behind through Aaron Dobbs but was unable to put the finishing touches his general play deserved.

The visitors must have gotten the hairdryer treatment at the break as they came out flying. Snapping into tackles, getting first to every ball and made it 2-1 six minutes in. Following some scrappy play on the edge of the box, up stepped Dean Kelly to unleash a thunderbolt from 25 yards that could only hit Dean Delany’s hand as it flew past and it was game on.

The home fans unrest was put at ease when Prendergast put his side 3-1 up with almost a carbon copy of his goal in the first half. Fitzgerald delivery to the back and the big centre-half nodded home past the helpless Gaffney.

The game was put beyond doubt when Owen McCormack was helpless to avoid David O’Sullivan’s low cross as the ball deflected into his own net as the home side kept pace at the top of the league.

COBH RAMBLERS 0 ( )

SHELBOURNE 3 (James English 32′, 49′; James Brown 68′)

Owen Heary’s Shelbourne secured their first win in four games with an impressive 3-0 win over Cobh Ramblers at St. Colman’s Park on Friday evening.

The opening half was dominated by Shelbourne with the front three of O’ Sullivan, Evans and English looking threatening from the off. The away side should have taken the lead in the 5th minute when a ball over the top caught Ramblers goalkeeper Paul Hunt in two minds as to whether he could catch the ball or not.

He opted to head clear but it fell nicely to Kavanagh who lobbed the ball towards goal but it went agonisingly over. Further chances for Hughes and English were missed before Evans spurned a tap-in at the back post in the 21st minute.

After good work by English, he fizzed a ball across the six-yard box that Evans somehow missed. The opening goal looked certain to come and it duly arrived in scrappy circumstances in the 32nd minute when English pounced on a poor header from Cobh defender O’ Sullivan to neatly stroke home pass Hunt to Shels a deserved lead.

Ramblers pressed late in the half for an equaliser but failed to muster any clear-cut chances. The second half saw Shelbourne extend their lead when a delightful ball by Kavanagh into the box could only be flicked on by McSweeney towards the back post where English was lurking.

The young attacker set himself and rifled a volley past Hunt for his second goal of the night. Moments later David O’ Sullivan had the opportunity to put the game beyond doubt but his shot was well saved at the near post by Hunt.

That miss didn’t prove too costly however as in the 68th-minute Shels sealed the three points when Brown broke down the wing and his cross was spilled into the net by Ramblers captain Hunt.

It was a poor mistake by the Rams netminder that summed up his team’s lacklustre display throughout. For Shels, this was as dominant a display that they could have hoped for, especially away from home, and were full value for their victory.

LONGFORD TOWN 1 (Dylan McGlade 61′)

SHELBOURNE 1 (Dave O’Sullivan 50′)

David O’Sullivan came back to the City Calling Stadium to haunt his old club as his goal led to the sides sharing the spoils on a calm night in the Midlands.

The first half was all Shelbourne, and they had numerous chances to take the lead, including a goal that was correctly disallowed for offside. Longford were poor in the opening half but they were considerably better in the second 45 minutes.

However, it still took the away side to score first for them to get fully going. Lorcan Fitzgerald’s corner on the right was met by a ferocious header by David O’Sullivan and he directed it perfectly into the roof of the net.

However, it was a major mistake that led to De Town’s equaliser. As the match wore on Dylan McGlade’s influence on the game was growing. It was James English who passed the ball back without looking and he gave it to Dylan McGlade on the right wing. He cut inside and drilled a hard shot past Lee Stacey, who had no chance.

The draw isn’t much good to either side as both teams continue to sit outside the playoff positions.

FINN HARPS 0

Shelbourne and Finn Harps played out a scoreless draw at Tolka Park on Friday night.

It was a chance for Shels to leapfrog the visitors, but neither side could break the deadlock. Chances were few and far between in the first half. David O’Sullivan headed wide in the fourth minute, after being set up by Lorcan Fitzgerald.

Derek Prendergast attempted to get on the end of a Fitzgerald corner just after the half-hour mark, but it was just too far ahead of him. James English tried to set up Mark Hughes on the stroke of half-time, but Ciaran Gallagher did well to get out and punch clear.

Ciaran O’Connor forced Dean Delaney into a save, but that was the visitor’s best chance of the opening forty-five. The second-half wasn’t even twenty seconds old when Adam Evans nearly broke the deadlock.

His effort from just inside the box went into the side netting. A well-worked free-kick in the sixty-third minute had Harps under the cosh. Lorcan Fitzgerald worked it short to David O’Sullivan, who hit a low ball across the goal, but the visitors managed to clear the danger. At the other end, Dave Mulcahy put in a great challenge to deny Michael O’Connor as the game entered its final fifteen minutes.

The Harps striker had done well to work some space for himself, but Mulcahy was ruthless once O’Connor took a heavy touch. Owen Heary’s side had two massive chances in the final ten minutes.

English got on the end of a cross from the left, and you could hear the collective intake of breath as Shels fans prepared to celebrate. But he didn’t get over the ball, and the header was well wide.

English then turned provider shortly afterwards, as he set-up David O’Sullivan. The striker’s effort from five yards deflected over the crossbar off a Harps boot. Michael O’Connor had the final chance of the night, but he blasted over from eight yards, as both sides took a point away.
