Shelbourne v UCD

SSE Airtricity League – First Division

Tolka Park – May 1st – KO 8.00pm

After two away fixtures, at opposite ends of the country, Shelbourne return to Tolka Park, on Friday, where they host UCD in the Series 9 fixture of the SSE Airtricity League, First Division.. Kick-off at Tolka Park is scheduled for 8.00pm.

Shelbourne left Ballybofey pointless last Friday night, having lost out to the only goal of the game – an 80th minute goal from the penalty spot after Harp’s Raymond Foy tumbled over in the area.

UCD had Cobh Ramblers as opposition at the Belfield Bowl last time out, the game ending with honours even, Ryan Swan and Stephen Kenny trading scores.

The league table, following last week’s games, shows UCD and Shelbourne in 4th and 5th places, respectively – the ‘Students’ on 11 points (GD 5), while the Reds are on 8 points (GD -4).

Last time out, the second week of the season, Shelbourne took all three points from Belfield, courtesy of a goal from defender Sean Heaney in the 75th minute.

In the nine games played between the sides (7 league, 2 Leinster SC) since the start of 2012, Shelbourne came out on top in five, UCD in three (incl a LSC game won on penalties), with one game drawn.

Speaking about last week’s game away to Finn Harps, manager Kevin Doherty had this to say “I was very pleased with our performance last weekend against Finn Harps, which saw us back to our solid best. We had a number of chances to score that vital first goal, but it just didn’t happen. The penalty decision, which ultimately meant that we left empty handed, was disappointing, but going forward, this is the type of performance we require to get our season back on track.”

And on Friday’s game against UCD “It was a very tough game when we played them early in the season. They have had a number of good results lately. No doubt we can expect them to come to Tolka and play their usual passing game and I expect that there won’t be much between us at the final whistle..”

For a change, we can report that everyone has been given a clean bill of health (with the exception of Simon Dixon, who misses the remainder of the season).

There are no players absent through suspension.

FINN HARPS 1 (McHugh pen 80′)

SHELBOURNE 0

REPORT COURTEY OF extratime.ie

byAlan Foley

A Kevin McHugh penalty with 10 minutes remaining was enough to see off Shelbourne and maintain Finn Harps’ five-point lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League First Division in Ballybofey .

Ollie Horgan’s side have been miserly in the concession stakes and although the Harps manager would’ve been content with a seventh clean sheet in eight outings this term, it was a contest that was made up of a succession of half-chances. Just like when the teams met at Tolka Park on the opening night of the season, it looked like it would end without a goal.

Without the suspended Wilfried Tagbo, who was sent off in the 1-0 win at Wexford Youths six nights’ beforehand, Harps didn’t look they had the bite to seal the three points in front of the 964 who paid their way through the gates.

However, captain McHugh held his nerve from 12 yards to score the only goal of the game – his 180th for the club he debuted for in 1998 – after Raymond Foy was brought down. Shelbourne appealed vociferously to referee Rhona Daly.

Beforehand, the closest either side came to a goal was when Gareth Harkin, the Harps winger, was alert enough to clear off his own goalline after Craig Walsh got an inventive flick – when he let the ball go under his standing foot and swept it with his heel on the instep – from a corner from Mark Sandford on 50 minutes.

While the visitors certainly had the best chance, the hosts had more of them. However, although Greg Murray in the Shelbourne goal saw a handful of efforts fly wide and over of his post and crossbar, he didn’t have to overly stretch to keep his sheet clean for long spells. Ironically, when he finally was beaten, it was when Shelbourne were enjoying their best period of the game.

Harps’ last two goals – Keith Cowan in the 1-0 win in Athlone and Thomas McMonagle in Wexford – have come from their centre-halves and with that in mind, Cowan was the first to chance his luck when he drove wide of Murray’s post on six minutes after a squared ball from Josh Mailey.

Foy was next to have a go, in his case testing the visiting goalkeeper, when set-up by Ruairí Keating. Shelbourne’s first opening came on 11 minutes when Walsh, who was on the left-hand side cut in on his right foot only to shoot across Ciaran Gallagher’s goal.

Brian McGroary almost caught out Murray with an overhit cross on 17 minutes, only for the netminder to scamper backwards and, at a stretch, tip over. Harkin then put in a dangerous ball, zipping along the grass in the Shelbourne penalty area, only for Murray to again get the important touch.

Harps went close again on 25 minutes when Cowan headed inches wide after a cross from Josh Mailey, who chased down a half-cleared corner-kick. Six minutes before half-time, however, a fluffed clearance from Ciaran Coll almost deceived Gallagher, only for Cowan to lump the ball away with Walsh sniffing about. Right on the half-time whistle, McHugh engineered an angle for himself but again the shot was marginally wide.

The pattern of the first half was apparent as the second began to take shape with Keating skipping into space and having a go. The Sligo Rovers loanee’s shot went the wrong side of the post and parity remained.

Shelbourne manager Kevin Doherty had to plan without a number of players, with Simon Dixon, Dave Ryan, Alan Kehoe and Jack Brady all absent for one reason or another. But his team were coping well on the face of things. At the other end, Keating passed up on a good opportunity when he shot wide at the near post after being played in by Harkin following a clearance that Murray didn’t get near enough purchase on.

Harps were untidy in the second half and Shelbourne threatened a little more from the occasional break as the good spell of weather finally cracked. Fourteen minutes from time, the Drumcondra team didn’t crack as McHugh brought a bit of noise to the home support but his turn and shot was just a yard too high.

It looked as though the breakthrough would never come. When it finally did, it came from the most familiar of sources.

COBH RAMBLERS 1(Ryan Goldsmith 16′)

SHELBOURNE 0

Report courtesy ofextratime.ie.

by Stephen Walsh

Cobh Ramblers moved off the bottom of the SSE Airtricity First Division on Saturday night thanks to a goal from Irish U-19 international Ryan Goldsmith when he finished off Stephen Kenny’s cross on 16 minutes against Shelbourne in St. Colman’s Park.

Cobh are now unbeaten in the league under Stephen Henderson. Shelbourne rallied in the second half but were unable to get past a defiant Cobh defence with Brendan Frahill in particular standing out for the home side.

The home side opened the scoring on 16 minutes when Kenny dribbled past Daire Doyle crossing across a few players to Goldsmith who slotted it in the back post. They were forced into a substitution straight after when Andrew Bhandarkar fell awkwardly and had to be stretchered off the pitch.

Shelbourne had a few chances off an equaliser with the best chance falling to Philip Hughes on 24 minutes when he was unable to direct his shot from inside the six yard at the target following good play by Conor Earley down the left wing.

Gareth Coughlan, who was full of attacking prowess for Shelbourne during the game whipped in a few dangerous crosses along with a few long distance shots but nothing could get past Stephen Hickey in the Cobh goal who replaced David Browne shortly before kick-off.

Both of Cobh’s wingers swapped wings during the first half and they nearly had a goal but Kenny fired wide from 12 yards.

On the verge of half time Hickey denied Coughlan from close range to preserve Cobh’s opening half lead.

Shelbourne opened the second half with an increased tempo and they were putting the Cobh defence under pressure but were left relying on an Alan O’Sullivan shot that went over the bar on 57 minutes.

Cobh could have doubled their advantage on 62 minutes when Kenny found himself one on one with Greg Murray from 12 yards but the keeper stood tall and saved the shot.

Both sides then had frees on the edge of the box with Shane O’Connor and Gareth Coughlan both hitting the wall.

Shelbourne then threw the proverbial “kitchen sink” at the Cobh goal in search of an equaliser with O’Sullivan’s shot being cleared off the line by Frahill on 71 minutes.

On 79 minutes the Dublin side forced four consecutive corners but Adam Sullivan blocked twice on the line and Hickey made a finger tip save from a Hughes header to preserve the lead and allow Cobh hold on for a valuable three points.
