Waterford FC had to settle for a point at home to Shelbourne in the race for promotion after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Shelbourne.

Despite levelling early in the second half, The Blues couldn’t find a winner despite their second-half dominance. Waterford had a golden opportunity to open the scoring after just three minutes.

Mark O’Sullivan was fouled in the penalty area but David McDaid fired high over Dean Delany’s crossbar. And they were left to rue that miss as Shelbourne took a 5th minute lead. A long ball from the back caught Waterford’s Sean Heaney out and Adam Evans collected.

He cut inside the defender before beating Matthew Connor to make it 1-0. Mark O’Sullivan and John Martin had chances for the home side, before Evans almost doubled the lead – he forced Matthew Connor into a smart save.

As half time approached, it was Evans again causing problems, this time he set up Mark Hughes but his header couldn’t beat Connor. The Blues levelled just three minutes into the second half.

Paul Keegan whipped in the corner from the left into a packed penalty area for Aaron Drinan to get the final touch to make it 1-1. John Martin and Dylan Kavanagh traded chances for either side before Paul Keegan’s free kick from outside the box didn’t trouble Delany.

The Blues looked for a winner and substitute Sander Puri almost made an instant impact – he picked up the ball from Drinan but his effort crashed back off the post. Puri fired over before he had another late chance from Drinan’s right-wing cross but he couldn’t connect.

COBH RAMBLERS 1 (Cian Leonard 70′)

Full Time Whistle report with thanks to sseairtricityleague.ie

SNATCH AND GRAB FOR COBH AS THEY TAKE ALL THREE POINTS FROM TOLKA PARK

10-man Cobh grabbed all three points as the push for promotion continued with an against the run of play victory against a Shels side who will be wondering how they didn’t get at least a point from tonight’s game.

You would be forgiven, at how the game started, for thinking the home side were the promotion chasers with Shelbourne utterly dominant in all aspects of the game. David O’Leary ran the midfield as the visitors struggled to get any sort of rhythm to their game with the ball not sticking up top . Halfway through the first period Shels were inches away from taking the lead, when Dylan Kavanagh delivered a delicious cross from the left wing and talisman James English was inches away on the stretch.

The second half continued in the same vein with both English and O’Brien being denied from last ditch tackles right from the off. The visitors task to get a foothold in the game was made ever more difficult when Peter Callanan received a straight for a terrible lunge over the ball on Prendergast.

Amazingly the 10 men took the lead when a hopeful ball over the top wasn’t dealt wth by Byrne, who failed to cut out the lofted pass and Cian Leonard, who worked tirelessly throughout, kept his composure to slot home. Incredible scenes were to follow shortly after, when Derek Prendergast was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on goalscorer Leonard. Amazingly referee John McLoughlin consulted his linesman and changed his decision to offside letting the hosts off the hook.

Shels, despite their possession failed to break down the resolute Ramblers defence and the three points headed back down to Cork

Shelbourne were fast out of the blocks and took the lead just 26 seconds into the second half. Chris Lyons took advantage of defensive mistake to brilliantly finish past Waterford keeper McLoughlin into the back of the net.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men after 65 minutes when midfielder Niall Lanigan was given a second yellow card.

Waterford had the chance to equalise on 75 minutes from the penalty spot after Mark O’Sullivan was fouled, but David McDaid’s penalty was well saved by Dean Delany.
