Shelbourne FC is delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Gary Deegan from Cambridge United FC.

Having began his career at Shels in 2006, Deegan has played for Hibernian FC, Coventry City and Northampton Town after leaving for the UK in 2010.

The 32-year-old has played in the UEFA Intertoto Cup for the Reds as well as the UEFA Champions League for neighbours Bohemian FC.

Deegan won the League of Ireland and FAI Cup double with Bohs in 2008 and also won the English Football League Two Play-Offs with Southend United in 2015.

Deegan played 41 times for Cambridge United in the 2018/2019 season and 42 times the season previous in the EFL League Two.

The Dubliner was also voted onto the 2009 League of Ireland PFAI Team of the Season before being signed by Chris Coleman’s Coventry City.

Shels boss Ian Morris said Deegan arrives set to “help drive us on.”

“I’m really pleased, he’s the one that I’ve been keeping an eye on for quite a while. He brings a wealth of experience to us with attitude, mentality and ability as well, so I’m delighted to get him in,” Morris said.

“He’ll be a big help and drive standards as well adding to what we have in the building. We’ve got a lot of experience in there and I think he’ll be the final piece of the puzzle,” he added.

As we finish a year of great success for Shelbourne Football Club, and enter our 125th year, we would like to send a message of thanks to our sponsors, volunteers and supporters.

With the SSE Airtricity League First Division title, promotion to the Premier Division, FAI Women’s National League Cup title and a great year for our academy, 2019 has been a year to remember.

We would like to say a special word of thanks to our sponsors Dublin City University, FLYEfit, Daniel Whelan’s Tiling and Bathrooms, Feehan Consultancy Group and EISports, without whom we would not have achieved such great success.

We owe another special thanks to our dedicated and wonderful supporters with attendances at Tolka Park almost doubling in 2019 as we secured our return to the top flight.

As our men’s first team manager, Ian Morris, frequently referred to several times in the year, the bond between players and fans was remarkable throughout the year both home and away.

A club is only as good as it’s volunteers, so to all those who provide so much of their spare time to the betterment of the club, we would also like to thank every single volunteer for their terrific work again this year.

With so much to be excited about in 2020, our 125th year, we would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and an even better new year.

Our SSE Airtricity League Premier Division team will take on a team of former Shels youth player Izzy Dezu’s team mates tonight at the AUL Complex.

Kick off is 19:30 and all support is welcome to mark this special occasion.

Izzy Dezu passed away at just 16-years-old after collapsing while playing for Shels in a Dublin and District Schoolboys League (DDSL) under-16 match against St Kevin’s Boys on December 12, 2017.

Izzy is remembered everyday as a fantastic and wonderful friend, player, sibling and son as tonight’s match will go some small may of celebrating his life.
