Shelbourne boss Damien Duff has told Shels fans “don’t underestimate how important the home support is” as the Reds welcome Dundalk to Tolka Park on Friday night.

Shelbourne welcomes back Sean Boyd from suspension and Adam Thomas returns from injury for matchday selection consideration.

Shels drew 1-1 with Dundalk last time out in Tolka Park but lost out in a tight encounter with the Lilywhites at Oriel most recently.

“It’s a long time since we’ve played at home with a over a month since our last game with UCD so it will be nice to be back on home turf with a passionate home fan base,” Duff told shelbournefc.ie.

“Having Sean back is a big plus as he’s a big presence on and off the field so hopefully he continues his good form but also stops getting booked so much,” he added.

Duff was full of praise for two young starlets in training and the match day squad last week as Lewis Temple and Gavin Hodgins have impressed in training this week.

Duff said young central defender Temple “played with the cigar out he was that comfortable” in a in-house friendly match recently.

The former Republic of Ireland winger said Hodgins was “unfortunate” to have hit the crossbar last week in Dalymount but hailed the young striker as “one for the future.”

“I want more and more out of the players every day and they know that but they’re in great shape as one of the fittest teams in the league so we’re ready to go for Friday,” Duff said.

“They’re in good form and whether they’ll mount a title challenge now I guess we’ll see but we’re looking forward to being at home and with the 12th man again,” he added.

Shels have no further suspensions ahead of tomorrow’s game while Daniel Hawkins continues to recover from injury.

Shelbourne Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Welsh goalkeeper Scott Van Der Sluis.

Scott joins the Reds after his previous spell with Bangor City in Wales and has represented Wales at U15, U16, and U17 level.

The 21-year-old spent his youth development at Liverpool, Manchester United and Swansea City and had a spell with Merthyr Town too in Wales ahead of his move to Tolka Park for the rest of the season.

Scott’s move is subject to international clearance.

Shelbourne FC Head Coach Damien Duff said: “Scott has only trained with us this week but has already impressed us greatly. He has all the attributes we want from a goalkeeper so that is why the deal has been done so quickly. He is very ambitious and was eager to come to the LOI which speaks volumes about Shelbourne and the league.”

Scott Van Der Sluis said: “It’s been a really good week, really professional and a great set of lads and it’s a great standard. I’m looking forward to getting started and hopefully the first game at Tolka Park comes as quick as possible”

Shelbourne boss Damien Duff has said there’s “no better game” to come back to tomorrow evening as the Reds return to action to face Bohemians in the North Dublin Derby.

Shels came into the break in good form but Duff said it came at “the right time and the wrong time” as the Reds welcome back bodies for the second half of the season.

“We’ve had a mini-preseason if you will so the lads are ready to go and get right back into it” he told shelbournefc.ie.

“The lads know it’s a derby so there’s always those things to tap into but we’ll be ready to go,” he added.

Shelbourne will be without Sean Boyd through suspension after he accumulated a number of yellow cards in the first half of the season.

The Reds, however, welcome back Brian McManus and Adam Thomas into the frame for squad selection after their recent injuries while Sean McSweeney nears full fitness having missed the first half of the season.

“We’re halfway through the season now and I’d like to think the fans can identify with the team now. They’ve been amazing for us and the lads get that with some amazing nights so far,” Duff said.

“Everything we do is to be inclusive for the fans, the Club, the staff and players and we have built that togetherness. So we’re ready to go,” he added.

Lewis Webb and Jordan McEneff have both ended their loan spells at Shels as JJ Lunney has extended his contract until the end of 2023.

Shelbourne Football Club is delighted to announce that midfielder JJ Lunney has extended his contract at the Club until the end of the 2023 season.

The fluid midfielder has made 29 appearances in red since joining in 2021 and was a pivotal success in the team that gained Shels the First Division title in 2021.

JJ has since gone from strength to strength in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division scoring his first Reds goal in the 2-1 win away to St Patrick’s Athletic.

The 24-year-old has made 134 league appearances in his career and hails from Swords, North Dublin.

Shelbourne FC Head Coach Damien Duff said: “It is great news for everyone involved at the club that JJ has signed back for next season already. He was a big miss for us at the start of the season so having him back fit has given everyone a lift. He has shown his quality since his return and has brought a different dynamic to the team. We all look forward to working with JJ over the next 18 months and beyond.”

JJ Lunney said: “I’m delighted to extend my contract to cover 2023. It’s very exciting times at Shels with the group we’ve got at the minute and we believe that there’s so much more still to come both for the rest of this season and next season. I look forward to achieving success with the Club.”

Shelbourne XI featuring current coaching staff and former players to celebrate LGBTQ+ inclusivity in football with fifth annual Pride Cup match against Dublin Devils

Shelbourne Football Club is delighted to announce the return of the annual Dublin Pride Cup match between Shels and the Dublin Devils.

Celebrating diversity and inclusivity, the Pride Cup game, an Official Event at Dublin Pride 2022, will see a Shelbourne XI team of former players and current staff including Mark Rutherford, Damien Duff, Joey O’Brien, David McAllister, Alan Quinn, Paul Skinner, Seana Cooke, Oscar Brennan and club members face off against Dublin Devils, Dublin’s largest LGBTQ+ football team.

The match will be hosted at Tolka Park on June 18th, 2022, with a 2pm kick off time. Entry to the game is free for fans.

The 2022 Pride Cup match will be the fifth time the two teams have competed against each other. Due to the impact of Covid-19 restrictions in previous years, this year’s game will be the first Pride Cup match to be played in front of a crowd at Tolka Park since 2019.

Since the inaugural match against the Dublin Devils in 2017, the Pride Cup has grown in popularity. The game stands as a celebration of equality and diversity in football and represents the spirit of Pride Month and the Dublin Pride Festival.

The game follows the hugely successful hosting of the GFSN Cup on May 28 at Tolka Park where Village Manchester won the trophy which celebrates LGBTQ+ inclusivity in football after a penalties win over Dublin Devils.

Shelbourne FC Community Officer, John McGouran, said: We’re very excited to host the Pride Cup once more this year and hope that the event continues our push for inclusivity in football. The Reds Together Programme has built a brilliant network of people interested in extending the principles of inclusion in football throughout the Club and we would like to issue the message once more that everyone is welcome at Tolka Park and Shelbourne FC.

With more coverage recently around LGBT+ professionals in football, it is important that we build on these positive impacts and allow the game to be open to all. We can’t wait to welcome the Dublin Devils again to Tolka Park on Saturday and all who wish to attend.”

Dublin Devils chair, John Coary, said: “The Pride Cup is not only an annual reminder of the strong relationship which we have built with Shelbourne FC and of the on-going support which they have provide to both our Club and to Dublin’s LGBT+ community, but is also an important showcase to highlight how important LGBT+ inclusion in football in Ireland is.

This year with Jake Daniels taking the incredibly courageous step of becoming the first openly gay LGBT+ professional footballer since Justin Fashanu in the 1990s there is a real feeling of optimism that football is finally turning a corner when it comes to LGBT+ inclusion and we hope that this year’s Pride Cup can build on that feeling of optimism and inclusion. As a Club we are delighted to have the opportunity to take the field again against some of Shelbourne FC’s true legends and are looking forward to a great day in Tolka Park.”
