Shelbourne played host to Galway United and ran out easy 4-0 winners at a damp Tolka Park on Friday last. Shelbourne remain the only unbeaten side in either league. Ryan Brennan and Jr Wilson impressed last time out against UCD and manager Ian Morris was hoping his side could sustain the benchmark they had set in their previous 9 games. Galway came into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw against Cork City last time out. Manager John Caulfield would have been hoping players like Conor McCormack and Padraic Cunningham, could cause trouble for the back four of Shels.  Unfortunately on the night they came up against a slicker, more organised and well drilled Shels side, who showed no mercy.

Galway started on the front foot, with Ruairi Keating causing trouble for Shels and winning an early corner. Shels responded with some nice possession, with Yoyo Mahdy and JJ Lunney showing well in the early stages. On 6 minutes reds winger Farrell tried his luck from range but his effort was dragged wide to Galway keeper, Conor kearns’s right hand post, after some nice build up play down the right touchline. Shels midfielder Georgie Poynton was beginning to dictate play and after a few touches in his own half, Shels created a chance on 10 minutes only for defender Kevin O’Connor to needlessly foul Galway’s Shane Duggan.

The next couple of minutes proved lacklustre, with both teams struggling to gain a foothold in the game.  However, Shane Farrell showed his quality, spraying the ball wide to JJ Lunney, who ended up colliding with Galway’s Killian Brouder. On 16 minutes Mahdy showed his potential, dropping his shoulder and lead the United defence on a merry dance. Galway created a half chance, when strikers Ubaezuonu and Place combined, but the resulting shot was dragged wide with 20 minutes on the clock. Shelbourne’s avenue to goal seemed to be via the set- piece route. Kevin O’Connor had resulting deliveries cause chaos in the Galway rear-guard, but unfortunately neither attempt led to a chance of note.

Shels almost had the lead midway through the first-half when Farrell set up Michael O’Connor, spun on the half turn and brought out the best in Kearns, with the ball looking destined for the top corner. However the lead goal arrived on 26 minutes, when a defensive mistake by Gary Boylan gave the ball to Michael O’Connor, who ran at the backline of Galway and his shot was deflected into the bottom right corner. The reds 1-0 up. Galway were well and truly rattled and Nugent was booked for a poor challenge, as Shels looked to press home their advantage. Shels ball retention was impressive and with that the reds looked dangerous at every opportunity going forward.Farrell was taken down outside the box just after the half hour mark. The free kick was deflected wide, but Galway were struggling to get any foothold in the game. Shels had them pinned in. However on 33 minutes Galway created their best chance of note, when a ball was played across the box, with Maurice Nugent seeing his effort agonizingly go wide of the back post. Galway at this stage were asking more questions of the reds defence and a moment of pinball, resulted in a header by Brouder drifting wide, much to the relief of Clarke.

Shels were defensively on top and this was laying the foundations for many of our attacks. The lead was doubled on 41 minutes, when Wilson provided width down the right and pulled the ball square to O’Connor, who had his effort deflected past the helpless Kearns. O’Connor’s 2nd and Shels looked comfortable at this stage. Byrne and Gilchrist were proving a rock at the heart of the reds defence and at half-time Shels went in 2-0 up. Galway manager John Caulfield would have had plenty to say to his Tribesmen at the break, with Galway lacking that creative spark, with midfielders Hurley and Cunningham having their qualities nullified, by the likes of Brennan and Lunney.

The 2nd half started with Yoyo Mahdy winning a free-kick which was easily saved by Kearns. Galway needed more impetus in attack, with Brouder firing in a Rory Delap type throw in, which was well covered by the reds back four. Galway’s Hurley received a booking moments later as Galway looked to get themselves back into this encounter. Farrell  then went through into the Galway penalty area and received a booking for simulation, as his plea for a spot kick fell on deaf ears. Shels extended their advantage on 54 minutes when Yoyo Mahdy swivelled outside the area and found the bottom corner with a fine effort.

At this stage it was proving damage limitations for Galway, as Shels were started to pick their way through at will. Poynton in midfield was giving an exhibition of ball winning ability, which Galway were unable to live with. Galway made a double substitute with Cunningham and Hurley being replaced by Rowe and Waweru, in the hope that the men from the west could salvage something. Galway’s Duggan then received a booking for a mistimed challenge on Poynton. The reds almost had a 4th on 64 minutes, when a ball was lofted into the area, with Kevin O’Connor’s effort just missing the target. Moments later the same player had a free-kick whipped into the area and it produced a fingertip stop by keeper Kearns. Galway’s Ruairi Keating looked the most likely in a disappointing display, but Clarke reacted well to a deflected effort to keep his clean sheet intact. Rowe was making an impression for Galway, but with under 20 minutes remaining Galway needed a mini miracle. However Duggan gave Shels a moment’s concern, when he received the ball outside the area and curled a lovely 20 yard effort just wide of Clarke’s top left corner.

Galway’s Rowe was booked for a late challenge on Poynton, who had been on the receiving end of many tackles throughout. Galway’s Ubaezuonu took out Lunney as the game threatened to boil over. It seemed as though any hope of a Galway fightback was slowly wilting. However Duggan had another Shot deflected just past the post from a set play, with 10 minutes remaining. Shels boss Ian Morris brought off goalscorer O’Connor for Glen McAuley, as he looked to hold onto his side’s advantage. McAuley made an immediate impact getting on the end of a great Shels move involving Wilson and Farrell and McAuley dispatched the pass to the back of the net. Shels in cruise control and 4-0 up. Galway’s race was run and manager John Caulfield made a double substitution with Duggan and Boylan coming off for Christopher and Horgan, with only 4 minutes left. Galway’s patience was tested with Ubaezuonu being booked. Shels brought on Rooney and Barker for Wilson and Mahdy, with 3 added minutes left, followed by Farrell being replaced by Nolan. Shels played down the clock and ran out comfortable 4-0 winners. Shelbourne remain the pace setters in the first division and look like title winners, even at this relatively early stage. They now look forward to an away trip to Bray next time out, while Galway will have a lot of soul searching after that performance. They will be looking for a reaction against local rivals Athlone Town next time out.

Rebecca Cooke’s wonder goal against Peamount United in the Women’s National League in October 2019, became a Twitter sensation.  The goal lit up social media and received double the votes of Oscar Brennan’s league winner in Drogheda to claim Shelbourne FC goal of the season 2019. This outstanding piece of football had another significant reward.  Fast forward two years, and Rebecca has been snapped up by Quinnipiac University in Connecticut on a sports scholarship.

Rebecca has fine football pedigree.  Her grandfather, Martin, is an esteemed coach with Belvedere FC.  Current Irish Manager Stephen Kenny and ex Internationals Stephen Kelly and Stephen Elliott were taught how to play and emerged under Martin’s tutelage. “Grandad brought me down to Belvo to train with the boys teams” Rebecca recalls.  “I loved it, played goal at first then moved outfield “.  Rebecca says her grandfather has taught her the most important lesson in football and in life, “always learn from your mistakes “. This has stood her in good stead.

After a spell with Home Farm, the Portmarnock native would sign for the inaugural Shelbourne under 17 squad. This was a tremendous source of pride to her family, especially to Martin, who is also a long-standing Shels supporter. He says “ I first started following the Reds in the 1960s, and used to bunk into Tolka Park to see the likes of Strahan, Hannigan and Barber”. The Shelbourne Women’s National League team playing in Tolka has proved a great experience for Rebecca. “With the greatest respect to the A.U.L. In Clonsaugh, nothing compares to playing in a stadium with such a rich history dating back almost a hundred years”. She believes that equality is gradually coming to the women’s game in Ireland. “A lot of the credit is due to Shelbourne Football Club, who have taken a number of steps to boost equality and parity of esteem for all of our players.”

Her club and under age international reputation, lead to Quinnipiac showing an interest in acquiring her services, and in January she made the move. It has been a resounding success. Since the season started in March Rebecca has been named the MAAC Rookie of the Year and has been featured in the New England Soccer Journal’s Best XI. She believes the “standard is really high, there are girls from the Netherlands and Spain on our team”. However she is at pains to point out that the scholarship is not all about football. There is a serious academic side. Rebecca studies Criminal Justice and her career goal is to join the FBI. Back in Dublin for a break, she will train with Noel King’s Shels team.  She is very impressed with the off the field developments at Tolka this season. “The mental health promotion and anti stigma message on the new Shelbourne team kits is important and valuable for so many young people today”.

Rebecca has not given up on a full Irish International career.

Shelbourne boss Ian Morris said he is “really looking forward to getting fans back” to Tolka Park “as soon as possible” ahead of tomorrow’s home game against Galway United.

Shels look to continue their fine form against another rival tomorrow night as the second round of games in the SSE Airtricity League First Division gets underway.

Shels extended their lead at the top of the division last week with a 3-1 win over University College Dublin.

Ahead of tomorrow’s game, Manager Ian Morris said he fully backs volunteers and Covid-19 officers around the country to help create safe environments for allowing fans into grounds.

“It would be great to get them back. We’re here to entertain and with other restrictions being lifted I don’t see why it can’t be soon,” he added.

Morris has been pleased with his side’s form after the first round of games, saying they have “been tested a number of times.”

“We keep going right to the end of games. And we’ll certainly need that ahead of tomorrow’s game which will be on a knife-edge no doubt,” he added.

Reflecting on the year so far, Morris said the Reds “have to maintain their form” going into the break.

“Things can swing for you easily. You’ll see now that teams who started slowly at the start of the year and haven’t hit their form will only get stronger now.

“Teams in the middle to the bottom of the league will be putting runs together,” he added.

Shels have everyone except Gerardo Bruna and Denzil Fernandes available with the pair remaining out through injury.

Live coverage will be broadcast on LOITV with Steven Doody and Darren Cleary on live commentary.

Post-match analysis will also be available for Shelbourne Members and Patreon subscribers.

Andrew Dempsey reports from Tolka Park for The42.ie

SHELBOURNE STRETCHED THEIR lead at the top of the First Division table to five points as they saw off second-placed UCD by three goals to one at Tolka Park.

A Ryan Brennan brace proved to be the difference between the sides as the Students defensive failings at set-piece routines cost them dearly.

John Ross Wilson gave the Reds the lead, before Brennan scored two. Harvey O’Brien then scored a goal that proved to be a consolation four minutes before the break, with each goal coming from dead ball scenarios.

The Reds’ victory comes as a welcome boost ahead of the visit of Galway United to Tolka Park next weekend.

Shels started the game the better of the two teams and were rewarded for their good start in the 22nd minute as John Ross Wilson headed home at the back post from Kevin O’Connor’s inviting ball towards the back post.

And O’Connor’s prowess from the dead ball was there for all to see moments later, as the Reds doubled their lead from their next attack.

This time it was Ryan Brennan who got his name on the scoresheet as he prodded home after being found unmarked in the penalty area.

UCD rallied soon after, although they were unable to create much up front with either Colm Whelan or his striking partner Kerrigan.

But they were then handed a lifeline in the 41st minute as Harvey O’Brien fired home after Shels could not deal with Evan Weir’s free-kick routine.

However, that UCD hope was quickly dashed on the stroke of half-time as Brennan headed home again – as Shels once again profited on some poor defending from the visitors.

The 29-year-old headed home at the near post – beating Healy to the ball – to give his side a 3-1 lead at the break, with the UCD keeper hurting himself in the process.

Following an entertaining first-half, the Reds produced a professional second-half performance to seal the three points with few chances at either end.

UCD’s sole threat in a dour second-half came through a plethora of set-pieces – although they could not make their possession count against a strong Shels back four – with the Reds extending their lead at the top of the table to five points after nine games.

Shelbourne: Brendan Clarke; Kevin O’Connor, Ally Gilchrist, Luke Byrne (c), John Ross Wilson; Brian McManus (Sean Quinn 86), Yoyo Mahdy (Dayle Rooney 78), JJ Lunney, Shane Farrell; Michael O’Connor (George Poynton 61), Ryan Brennan.

Colm Barron appointed Head of Shelbourne FC Youth Academy

Shelbourne Football Club is delighted to announce that Colm Barron has been appointed as the new Head of Shelbourne FC Youth Academy.

Colm joins the club with a wealth of experience from his time at Dundalk FC, Warrenpoint Town FC, St Kevin’s Boys and the European Elite Soccer Academy.

A highly proficient, and highly regarded coach, Colm’s appointment is a noteworthy one, as the club continues to build and develop its academy structures and its player and coach pathways.

Colm’s role will oversee the entire academy structure of Shelbourne FC, with his remit covering the development and growth of all academy teams and coaches.

Shelbourne FC Technical and Sporting Director Alan Caffrey said: “This is a great appointment for the Academy and it shows the clubs commitment to develop Shelbourne FC Academy for both boys and girls into one of the best Academies in the country. Colm has vast experience in both player and coach education and we are delighted he is now part of our Football Club.”

Head of Shelbourne FC of Youth Academy Colm Barron said: “What excited me about the role was the long term project and the vision that Alan Caffrey and Dave O’Connor have for where we want to go. There is relative success there already and in the structures that have been put in place and it is unique with the boys and girls sections at the club already.

“What also is attractive is the idea of the investment into the Academy for the longer term  and into improving the players and the coaches that we have. I have extremely high expectations of myself and have been planning for a role like this for 5 or 6 years and those expectations will go into the project that is there which has to be a long term view.”

Shelbourne FC Chief Executive Officer David O’Connor said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Colm to Shelbourne Football Club and are very excited to have secured someone of Colm’s calibre to join our club. Colm is joining an academy structure which has developed significantly over the past number of years thanks to the incredible work and effort of dozens of volunteers, coaches and administrators.

“His passion for working with young players, boys and girls, will be evident for all to see and I know he will immerse himself in this role immediately. Colm brings a level of industry knowledge, experience and expertise that will undoubtedly contribute significantly to the development of our Academy and all of our underage teams, players and coaches.

Colm will work closely with Alan Caffrey, and all of the club’s underage coaches, in continuing the process of moving our academy structure forward in a very positive direction over the coming years.”

Shelbourne boss Ian Morris said his team will have to be on top form tomorrow as they face a UCD team with “threats all over the pitch.”

Shels welcome UCD to Tolka Park in a top of the table clash to finish up the first round of games in the SSE Airtricity League First Division this season.

Shels went two points clear of UCD last week, but Morris said the challenge for the Reds is now “ to stay there” as the “target will be on our backs now.”

Morris has nearly a full bill of health to choose from with Denzil Fernades awaiting further tests on his broken nose to judge when he can come back to training.

Michael O’Connor returns from suspension as Gerardo Bruna remains missing through long term injury.

“UCD always play a certain way and the way they operate with college and scholarships, they always attract that top young talent,” Morris said of Friday night’s opponents.

“I watched them last week there and they look good all over the pitch. They’ve had a little bit of disruption in their camp with Ian Ryan leaving and taking over at Wexford so that adds an extra angle to the game,” he added.

Shelbourne Under 19 Manager William O’Connor has also left his role to join UCD as their Assistant Manager and Morris said it shows the game has a number of elements to it.

“It’s going to be a fantastic game but we need to keep pushing and pushing and play the way we want to play.

“There’s a chance here to put a bit of distance there at the top. This is why we play football, for games like this,” he added.

Shels boss Ian Morris said he has been impressed at how his players are “constantly focusing on the next one” and not dwelling on wins as his side travel south to St Colman’s Park on Saturday night.

The Reds face Cobh Ramblers in the SSE Airtricity League First Division and Morris is well aware of how tough a trip it’s going to be.

Shelbourne will be without Michael O’Connor through suspension for Saturday’s trip and said the “door has opened for someone else to make their claim.”

“Players will have their peaks at different times throughout the season. We’ve got a strong squad. But the players know there’s two sides to the game and that we need different attributes within games.

“The respect is there that if you’re not wearing the shirt at the start, you could be the one to come as the match winner,” he added.

Though the Reds lost last time out in 2019 in Cobh, Morris said it is “important not to hang onto” previous records at grounds as his Shels side look for an eight game unbeaten.

“I don’t look at things like that. The two squads have changed drastically since the last time we were down there so it’s a fresh game.

“Possibly when you’re coming into round two or three you might be looking at that but we’re really focused on just going down there and play the attacking play we’ve been having,” he told shelbournefc.ie.

Shels will have adjusted their training schedule for the Saturday night kick off Morris said preparation has been “really good.”

Morris praised the job Stuart Ashton has done in Cork and knows his Shels side will be facing a team looking to fight for everything at St Colman Park on Saturday night.

“When Cobh win at home, no one is surprised. Stuart has done really well and we’re going to have to be at our best,” he added.

Shels will be without Denzil Fernandes and Gerardo Bruna through injury but otherwise face a clean bill of health bar Michael O’Connor’s suspension.
