Shelbourne look to make it back to back wins on Friday night as the Reds make the trip west to face Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds (7:45pm KO – live on LOITV)

Damien Duff’s side made it a winning start to the season at home as they beat the champions Shamrock Rovers 2-1 at Tolka Park.

The squad were back to work the following morning, and after a week of training at the AUL manager Duff delivered a squad fitness update to ShelbourneFC.ie: “Shane Griffin is still out, working through his injury. Sean Boyd is obviously suspended, aside from that we’ve a full team. John O’Sullivan went off last Friday, he just got a dead leg, he’s trained all week and is good to go.”

Sligo have enjoyed an undefeated start to the 2024 campaign, the Bit O’Red were unlucky not to beat Bohs in their season opener and followed that up with a draw against title contenders Derry City. Assessing the quality of tomorrow’s opposition Duff remarked:

“You could argue they’re a new outfit, made a lot of changes in the off season to their squad, John Russell would admit himself maybe that it was needed after last season. They’ve got top players, there for everyone to see, really dangerous players, a very good team. We have to go down there and show them respect as individuals and as a team, because they have a lot of quality.”

The Reds are facing into a busy few days with Friday’s game to be followed by the Monday meeting with newly promoted Galway United at Tolka Park. Duff is prepared to have their squad depth tested:

“I said it from day one, the squad is a lot stronger this year. We’ve seen so far, I would say the bench has played a big part in getting us the four points, we’ve a strong healthy squad full of quality and making changes is something we will do on the night and between games.

“I dont think I’m asking too much, I know people say I give out about players on Monday, it’s for the whole football world in every league, you play 3 games a week or 2 games in 3 days. It’s great, no sympathy for anyone who is saying it’s hard going, these are the best days of your life. Very simple, if you’re a top pro between games, there should be no flatness on Monday. That said, we’re not looking that far ahead. We’ve a big game in Sligo and we know we have to be at it because we’re playing a very good team.”

Liam Burt has made an instant impact since arriving in the winter on loan from Shamrock Rovers, he sat out the win over the Hoops but is in line to feature tomorrow night. Burt was fouled eight times in Shels’ draw with Waterford. That was the most fouls won by a single player in a league game across the last three seasons, Duff feels it shows what a handful Burt can be for defenders:

“He’s a big player in the league, big player in our team, I’ve had a giggle a few times even in training, he’s getting 8 knocks in training, he’s a magnet for getting kicked, everyday going home black and blue, even with our own guys, kicking him around. He gets a beating, it’s not going to change and he’s going to be used to it. He’s settled really well and we’re delighted to have him.”

The Reds won on their last two visits to the Showgrounds in 2023 but Duff feels those results will be meaningless come 7:45 tomorrow:

“Same for a lot of teams, its irrelevant, so much changes and turnover in squad and teams between seasons, Sligo is not far off that, it’s been a huge change in the off season, they have been impressive and you’d argue they’ve had as tough a start as possible away to Bohs and home to Derry. We know we have to fully prepare and we had out pre match, watched their stuff, done out homework and now we’re looking forward to the challenge of the weekend.”

The Ringsend Derby is the only show in town this Friday night as Shelbourne FC play host to the Champions in front of a capacity crowd at Tolka Park in the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Premier Division clash (7:45pm KO)

Damien Duff’s side picked up a point on the road with a 1-1 draw at the RSC in Waterford on Friday night. Sean Boyd netted the equalisers but was sent off shortly thereafter.

Duff was further hampered by the early loss of Shane Griffin to injury, with the defender ruled out of action this week.

He joins Liam Burt on the missing list as the Scottish attacker is unable to line up against his parent club. Duff delivered an injury update to ShelbourneFC.ie:

“Paddy trained this week and is available, he’s an important player in the team and squad, no two ways about it he was a big miss last week. On the flip side, it was a great opportunity for Lewis Temple and he stepped up and played really well, I thought he was one of the better performers on a difficult night, he came off a little early but that was no reflection on his performance, we just wanted to fresh it up, we have a bench, we’ll use it. Paddy was a miss last week, on the plus side he’s back and Lewis did really well when he came in.”

Games against the Hoops recently have been tight affairs, last season saw Rovers edge a 1-0 win at the Tallaght, Shels drew 2-2 in Tallaght, and Gav Molloy was the hero at Tolka netting a late goal in a 1-1 draw. Duff expects a similar tight and cagey affair: “I expect the same again, round one in the league is always a bit chaotic, tight games, we know what we’re facing, they’re the top team in Ireland, everyone wants to beat them. We haven’t done it yet since I’ve been here. Third season lucky I guess, we’re looking forward to the challenge and excited for the game.”

Some have described the Reds as a defensive side at times last season,  Duff feels this doesn’t fully reflect the attacking talent within their ranks: “I think questions like that you’re best asking the players what we work on during the week, some people have a picture of us sitting up in a low black all week, everything we do is with the ball, looking after the ball, dominating it, if we lose it, get it back quick as possible. If you don’t look after it you will defend, outside of that, defensive no it’s not how the staff coach the team, organically it might happen because Rovers can keep the ball for 10, 20, 30 passes, you’re naturally at times going to have to defend. Stuff like that doesn’t bother me, it’s not true I know what we’re about, I know what we are.”

Duff arrived to Shels in the summer of 2020, first taking up the role of head coach of the U17s side. The club has grown at a rapid pace since then. The Reds boss says it’s been a collective effort on and off the pitch to put the club back on the right path: “When I was with the 17s I was solely focused on them, I was close with Lukey but had no interest in the first team really, might ask him a few days later how they got on last Friday, I was all about the 17s. Since I’ve been in with first team, the club is a totally different animal. Why? I couldn’t give one reason. There are good people at the club, people you trust and respect, humble people that care deeply about the club, just as important as all that can deliver quality, that be the players that have delivered or even the staff, the staff come under all those banners, you just have complete trust respect, they’re hard working, they deliver brilliant detail and quality, they’re driving to help make this club better and take it forward.”

General sale for tomorrow’s game sold out on Tuesday afternoon, quicker than any other game to reach capacity at Tolka in the last 18 years. Duff has urged anyone in Dublin, or the surrounding areas, who may not traditionally be a League of Ireland fan, to come down to Tolka Park and give it a try:

“Well I can try and sell it all you want, you don’t believe it til your here and see it and feel with your own eyes, it’s an energy, it’s a community, it’s a sense of identity, it’s when a lot of people around Ireland feel alive, it’s Friday night 7:45pm, be it a fan, staff or a player, people are living for Tolka Park, under the lights, a big match night,  if you haven’t been before come down, give it a try, I’d be nearly certain you’ll get the bug and you’ll 100% be back.”

“If you can’t already tell, I can’t wait for tomorrow, it’s the best part of the week for me and the staff, I see comments in the press, certain managers in the league, ‘oh I dread Friday’, I won’t name them, but I can’t understand that mentality. It’s the best part of the week, hands down, no disputing it, it’s when you feel most alive, I said that to players last week. 3 months without a game, a long long time, and nothing will match the feeling you get from walking out to Tolka on a Friday night, I told the players, it’ll be the most alive you’ve felt in three and a half months, since last week in Waterford and before that game with Drogheda. It’s a Dublin Derby, Tolka is packed to the rafters, the final message to the players, go and deliver.”

Team news | Shelbourne v Waterford FC (A)

The wait is almost over for Shelbourne FC fans as the Reds are on the road tomorrow to face Waterford FC in the curtain raiser to the new League of Ireland Premier Division season (7:45pm KO)

Damien Duff’s side will travel to the RSC to face Keith Long’s newly promoted. The Reds rounded off pre-season with a convincing 7-0 win over Longford Town a week ago in Dublin.

Evan Caffrey and Sean Boyd both saw game time, which will provide Duff with a timely fitness boost ahead of the new season. After training in the AUL on Thursday, Duff delivered a fitness update to ShelbourneFC.ie:

“Everyone is fit but there are some guys who can get fitter, they are behind in pre-season because they are only coming back from injury now. Going into a game with everyone in contention to make the matchday squad, how often have I said that over my time here? It’s been rare, so a nice change.

“John Martin was the last to come back to back to training, he’s getting up to speed. John was unfortunate, 20 minutes into his first session he picked up an ankle injury, it was a shame because he actually started very brightly and we were looking thinking: ‘we’ve got a player here’ then the setback came. His recovery was fine and he’s back in the mix now.”

The sight of Matty Smith in Red will be one welcomed by fans after the talented Scottish attacker saw his game time in the latter part of the season  limited in 2023 due to injury. Smith has been in fine form in pre-season, scoring three goals as the Reds swept Longford aside 7-0. Duff was delighted to see Smith show signs he’s coming back to his best:

“When Matty came in here during the summer of 2022 he lifted everyone, I reference that a lot with him, you forget it’s not down to form or ability we didn’t see the best of Matty yet, he’s had chronic injuries for a year. He is a top player in this league, people would be wrong to forget that. It’s all about us managing him now, getting to know whet he feels he needs. Matty had an operation at the end of last season, he’s come back strong. I am over the moon for him not just to see him score a hat-trick but to see how much he’s enjoying being back and working hard, the most encouraging thing is over the last few weeks he’s telling me, he’s feeling great,

The Reds saw a number of players depart the club in the off season the most notable being the club captain Luke Byrne, who will miss attending a Shels game for the first time in six years this Friday night. Byrne retired due to a chronic knee condition. He’s left big boots to fill in the dressing room but Duff is confident there is enough leaders to step up:

“Everyone knows how I feel about Luke, but lads have to step up, we brought big character in during the off season. We also have guys who are already there that are leaders and will step up, Sean Boyd, Paddy Barrett, Mark Coyle who is club captain, then the signings, Keith Ward is non stop noise anyway, John O’Sullivan has a big presence, lots of experience, and leading isn’t all just talking. Liam Burt and Will Jarvis, they are leaders, sometimes you don’t speak to inspire others, its just ability, we have different characters and a great dressing room and we’ll manage it well.”

With the addition of Will Jarvis, Lorcan Healy, Sean Gannon, Keith Ward, Dean Williams, John Martin, and John O’Sullivan, and Liam Burt, Duff has considerably strengthened the squad ahead of the new season. Duff feels it is the strongest squad he’s had since taking charge at Tolka Park:

“Is it the strongest? That’s there for everyone to see, it’s the best squad I’ve had at Shels, probably the best squad we’ve had as a club in 15+ years, they are a great group, brilliant mentality, individually we have game changers. It’s up to you fans to have discussion over a pint and compare it with squads down the years, when was the last time we had a squad as strong. We all feel we’re in a really strong position going into the new season, it’s all well having a good squad the challenge then is finding your best XI and picking up results week in, week out.”

Duff feels one of the biggest changes will be the quality they can hold in reserve week to week with more bench options than previous years: “We’ve a bench now, and there’ll be a bit of learning in managing that for me, there’s some really good players who won’t start, but it’s not about keeping everyone happy, we’ll do what we always have here.

“The best XI and who deserves to start, will start. You don’t get handed starts for no reason at Shelbourne Football Club or on ability alone, it’s about consistently performing week in, week out, in training, on match day, on and off the pitch. The flip side, this is the most exciting thing we’ve had in 2 years, you see top teams making 3 changes on 60 minutes, then another couple then on 80 mins bringing in players who could change a game. We are there now, we could do that, we have a bench with depth, there’ll be real quality and people who can come on and completely change games and it’s exciting for us.”

Brian McManus left the Reds yesterday to join Bohs this week, Duff spoke warmly of the departing midfielder affectionately nicknamed Frank by his teammates:

“We’ve let 35-40 people go over the two years here and Brian was the hardest one, we all loved him, players, staff and fans, he has relations in the club, it’s a family affair for him, but we’re honest. This is best for both parties. I couldn’t promise Brian a lot of football and Bohemians could promise him that. It worked out well for him, and for us and we look forward to playing them. He’s a good player, he needs game time, that wasn’t something we could promise, it’s very simple.”

Brian McManus also spoke to ShelbourneFC.ie before departing this week, his parting message to Reds fans was: “I really enjoyed playing in front of the Shels fans, Tolka has been my home for three and a half years. I obviously just wish I played a bit more. Injuries stalled me but I loved every moment of it, it was a honour to play with Shels, I’ve made friends for life at the club and I’ll miss it, but I hope Shels fans will understand, I am trying to get my career on track after some injury setbacks and this move gives me the best chance to do that. Thank you for support”

February 14, 2024: Shelbourne FC are delighted to announce that Lewis Temple has signed a new contract extension that will keep him at Tolka Park until the end of 2025.

The talented defender has captained the U20 side during the Leinster Senior Cup group stage and will be part of the first team for the coming season. Temple joined the club from the Bray Wanderers academy.

The 18-year-old played twice for the Reds in 2022, having made his first team debut in the 3-0 win over Bray Wanderers in the FAI Cup, the defender also made an appearance off the bench in the 4-0 win over Bonagee United in the same campaign.

Lewis was a member of the first team squad in 2023 appearing twice, but joined Longford Town on loan during the summer where he made 22 appearances for Stephen Henderson’s side.

A towering central defender, Temple has represented Ireland at youth level where he most recently played for the U19 team.

Damien Duff, Shelbourne FC Head Coach said: “We gave Lewis his debut 2 years ago and he has consistently improved since then. He has a wonderful mentality and has massive scope to become a top player. He is coming off the back of a brilliant pre-season which is one of the many reasons we want him to be part of the squad this year rather than going out again on loan. It is very important to tie down our high potential young players so it is great news that Lew has signed back.”

Lewis Temple said:“I am delighted to be signing a new deal with Shels, I’ve really enjoyed the last couple of years being involved with this club, constantly pushing myself and improving under the manager has been great for my development and I’m really excited now to kick on again and keep improving. It’s exciting to be playing in Europe this year and hopefully I can help this club achieve the goals which we have set out for ourselves this season.”

February 14, 2024: Shelbourne FC are delighted to announce that Gavin Molloy has signed a new contract extension.

The renewed terms will see the 22-year-old defender remain at Tolka Park until the end of the 2025 season.

Molloy has become a key player for the Reds since making his first team breakthrough under Damien Duff in 2022.

The Dubliner has gone on to make 57 appearances for Shels, scoring 4 goals. He was named 1895 Young Player of the Year in 2023, an award voted by his fellow teammates, while also being nominated for the award the season before and being a consistent feature in the League of Ireland’s Team of the Week.

His winner in the FAI Cup semi-final against Waterford in 2022 will be fondly remembered by Reds fans, Molloy has also scored in the League of Ireland Premier Division in games against Shamrock Rovers and Finn Harps.

Showing experience beyond his years Molloy has emerged as a leader on and off the pitch, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, the late great Theo Dunne, who led the Reds as captain in the 60s.

Molloy has also worn the armband like his grandfather, and captained the Reds on a number of occasions.

Damien Duff, Shelbourne FC Head Coach said: “Gavin is an elite player, a dream to work with and as long as he is in Ireland, he has to play with his grandfather Theo’s club. He grows week in week out before our eyes and has quickly become one of the top players in the country. Simply, he is a class act on and off the pitch.”

Gavin Molloy said: “I’m honoured and very grateful to be extending my deal with the club. Shelbourne FC is only going in one direction, and I want to play a massive part in that. I felt like last season was a great season for me personally and for the club and I just want to push on even further. Having European football back in Tolka means everything and I can’t wait to put that red jersey back on.”
