LIMERICK 0

SHELBOURNE 1 (Ciarán Kilduff 38′ )

KILDUFF STRIKE KEEPS SHELS FLYING AT THE TOP

Shelbourne remain in pole position at the top of the SSE Airtricity League First Division following a 1-0 win over Limerick FC at the Markets Field.

Ciaran Kilduff’s strike on 38 minutes proved decisive but it could have been so different for the home side. Darren Murphy had a glorious chance to put Tommy Barrett’s men in front in the 21st minute when Kieran Hanlon was pushed by Luke Byrne in the penalty area. The former Cobh midfielder attempted to chip the ball into the net but got it horribly wrong as his effort sailed over the bar.

Lee Devitt had a chance immediately after the penalty but his effort was stopped by Colin McCabe. If the missed penalty wasn’t bad enough, things got worse for Limerick seven minutes before the break. Goalkeeper Jack Brady attempted to shield the ball over the end line for a goal kick but Kilduff managed to keep the ball in play and then supply a sublime finish from an acute angle.

Limerick were the better side in the first half but the Dublin side bossed the action after the break and cruised to victory without much trouble to maintain their advantage at the top.

Shelbourne Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen Henderson as Head of Youth Development. Stephen, who has more than 12 years experience as a manager in the League of Ireland, will begin the role immediately.

Stephen will lead and oversee the development of the club’s academy structures, drawing on his vast experience in educating and supporting the club’s academy players, coaches and managers.

A highly-qualified and well respected coach, Stephen entered into management in the League of Ireland in 2005 with Cobh Ramblers, who he guided to the First Division title in 2007. Stephen went on to manage Waterford United for 3 seasons, before returning to manage Cobh Ramblers.

Boasting an impressive playing and coaching CV, Stephen will be tasked with overseeing development and implementation of the Youth Development Programme at Shelbourne. This includes overseeing the continued development and growth of the club’s highly successful underage teams, from the Under 8 team through to the Under 19 team.

On his new role Stephen commented:

“After talking with Dave O’Connor and some of the people involved in the academy, it was clear for me to see that Shels are pushing in an exciting direction at senior and academy levels. To be part of that process is exciting and I am very grateful to the club for affording me this opportunity. Our job at the academy is to ensure we give the young players every opportunity to reach their potential through structured training sessions, lots of encouragement and really good information. There are some great coaches at the club and I’m really looking forward to working with them and the players closely over the coming season.”

In his new role, Stephen will be working closely with the Head of Football Operations in continuing to implement the Clubs long-term strategy for the academy, which consistently produces players and coaches of the highest calibre.

Shelbourne FC Chief Executive Officer Dave O’Connor added:

“We are delighted to have someone of Stephen’s calibre and experience join our academy structure. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge and has a proven track record of working with and developing young players.

Stephen’s role is to give support, direction and lend of all his vast experience to all our academy coaches and players. We are very lucky at Shelbourne to have a first class academy structure that provides an elite pathway through each of the underage National League, right through to our First Team. However, we are also unique and very lucky to also have a thriving community academy structure which enables us to develop players of all levels and abilities. Stephen will be tasked with overseeing the growth and development of this whole structure.

His passion for working with young players is infectious and I know he will immerse himself in this role immediately. I am really looking forward to working with him. With the recent restructuring of the underage schoolboy leagues, Stephens initial goals will be focusing on the pre-season scheduling for the Club’s DDSL teams, as well as monitoring the progress of each of the Club’s National League teams.”

Shelbourne FC First Team Manager, Ian Morris, also welcomes Stephen to the club by adding:

“I am absolutely delighted to welcome Stephen to Shelbourne Football Club. His record in developing young players is there for all to see. He knows exactly what it takes for young players to play at senior level and that will form part of his remit which is developing players, with the ultimate aim of passing as many of them as possible from our youth system into myself in the first team.”

PSHELBOURNE 2 (Ciarán Kilduff 16′, Derek Prendergast 85′)

DROGHEDA UTD 1 (Sean Brennan 45′)

Derek Prendergast scored what could prove a crucial goal in the First Division title race with an 85th minute winner to hand Shelbourne a 2-1 win over Drogheda United at Tolka Park.

There was little to separate the two sides over the 90 and a bit minutes on a rainy Northside Dublin night but the home side’s new found grit and determination saw them scramble over the line once again this season.

Shelbourne took the lead in the 16th minute thanks to a lovely move by Aidan Friel that saw the full-back cut inside and across the pitch, play a lovely one-two, and clip a ball into the centre of the box where Ciaran Kilduff was on hand to head home.Drogheda had a chance to equalise just minutes later when Luke Gallagher found Chris Lyons near the penalty spot.

The striker managed to get to the ball without his marker but he couldn’t fully trap it and a covering Shels defender got back to clear.

The visitors had another chance soon after when Conor Kane broke down the left and pulled back to find Stephen Meaney standing in acres of space just inside the box.

He hit it first time towards the bottom corner but Colin McCabe got down low to palm behind for a corner. With the first half drifting into injury time, it looked like the Dublin side would be heading into the break in front.

That was until Oscar Brennan took down Chris Lyons 25 yards from goal. Sean Brennan’s first effort was blocked by James English but it landed back at the feet of the man who experienced relegation heartache with Shelbourne in 2013.

This time around he connected sweetly to fire a sublime half-volley first time into the back of the net, giving McCabe no chance.Shelbourne started the second half slowly and Drogheda could have taken the lead if they’d done better with a couple of half chances they created.

It was end-to-end stuff during the second period with a share of the spoils looking most likely, until Lorcan Fitzgerald’s free from deep was nodded on by Luke Byrne for Prendergast to head past Luca Gratzer and send the Tolka Park stands into raptures.

The home faithful are starting to dream about finally returning to Ireland’s top division.
