Shelbourne FC Head Coach Damien Duff is looking forward to the first Dublin Derby of the season with almost a fully available squad to choose from as the Reds travel south of the Liffey to Richmond Park.

JR Wilson has returned to full fitness after last week where he made a substitute appearance from the bench. Shane Griffin meanwhile continues to recover from his muscular injury that saw him miss out last Friday.

Speaking to ShelbourneFC.ie Duff said “JR Wilson is fine. He came on last Friday it’s good to have him back fit and in contention. Shane Griffin is back on the pitch, he’s not 100% right yet but we’ll see how he goes and look to next week.”

Duff also spoke about the long-term absences of Conor Kane and Jad Hakiki “ The good news being that both are stepping up their recovery.”

When asked about the opening round of fixtures where only one team in the league picked up all 3 points on offer highlighting the competitiveness of the league assessing this Duff said:

“It will be a tight league around that midsection. A lot of teams are strong. I won’t be surprised to see teams take points off each other. Shamrock Rovers and Derry City you’d expect to pull away. After that there’s a lot of points up for grabs and a lot of giving and taking between the rest of the teams in the league.”

Tomorrow night’s opponents St. Pats opened their season with a late equaliser against title hopefuls Derry City when asked about their start to the season Duff analysed the game:

“Derry had a very good first half and could have been 2 or 3 goals up. Tim Clancy changed formation and brought quality on. Being able to spring Jake Mulraney and Eoin Doyle off the bench, that’s real quality. These players will have an influence and can cause the opposition problems. Set-pieces had a big say, pPat’s were relentless with corners and free-kicks. In the end Derry conceded. We’re expecting a tough game.”

Last time out against St. Pats the Reds fell to defeat on the closing day of the 2022 season Duff feels little can be taken from that result:

“No listen, it’s not worth reading anything into it. Grab maybe some patterns of defensive and attacking play but that’s about it. Our guys may as well not have been there, they had all eyes on the FAI Cup Final. Rightly or wrongly, it’s wrong, you can’t go into a league game like that, but I understand human instinct.”

“Lads went in focusing on staying fit and available for what was to come so honestly for us, it wouldn’t be worth reading too much into the scoreline or that night.”

Shels and St. Pats share a rivalry dating back to the Pat Dolan and Ollie Byrne days, this rivalry has reignited in recent times, Duff had his say when quizzed on this topic:

“I think there’s great history there, in the 2000s Shels v Pats was the fixture, that was the rivalry everyone was watching. Ollie Byrne and Pat Dolan, two of the big personalities in the league. It was good to see Pat at the game last week in Tolka, he looks after some of our lads as an agent.”

“Shels and Pats under Pat Dolan have had many battles down the years and that’s back to the front now. I think it’s down to our lads being competitive, upsetting people along the way. But the bit of needle has been reignited, take it as a compliment that that’s there.”

Discussing the results against St Pat’s from last season the head coach said:

“The 4-4 game we should have won, there was so much good stuff in it. It was a very good performance from us. I showed the lads the tape this morning, we gifted them a lot of goals over the four games. We feel we have to work hard and play great football to get goals, where we cough up easier goals for them. It’s something we’ve worked hard on to cut out.”

The Shelbourne Fans Forum took place on Wednesday night in the Tolka Bar with Damien Duff and captain Luke Byrne in attendance. Duff spoke about the honesty and positivity that was evident among those in attendance:

“It’s always nice to meet the fans at Tolka, I found it was a positive energy in the room. We tried to be open and honest. Hopefully they got insight into me and how I am, not in an interview or match night, because that’s not really how any of us are.”

“I hope I conveyed how we work. All the players get off me is honesty, energy and detail. That’s what I gave the fans the other night. Think they hopefully got some good detail into what we’re about, how we operate and more importantly my ambition for this club.”

With the season kick-off almost upon us, we would like to inform our fans of some works that the club has undertaken in Tolka Park over the past number of weeks.

One of the most significant pieces of work that has been conducted in Tolka Park has been the covering of the section of the first two steps of the Riverside Stand (the steps in which there are no seats).

This decision was one which was forced upon the club as a requirement for the annual sign-off of our Stadium Certificate. From a health and safety, and insurance, perspective the club are not in a position to have any spectators standing on these steps.

We fully appreciate that this will cause disruption for our fans in the Riverside Stand, and we would like to apologize for the inconvenience that this will cause. However, from a health and safety perspective, the club had no choice other than to put this measure in place in order to ensure that no spectators were able to stand on these two steps.

We hope that you, the fans, will understand our reasoning and rationale for taking this measure, and we hope that you will work with us to ensure a safe environment for everyone in the ground.

We would strongly encourage fans to use the meshing and barriers, which have been used to cover the steps, to drape their flags and banners and to continue to create a colorful, positive atmosphere in Tolka.

Shelbourne FC would also like to remind all fans that the club continues to adopt a strict policy towards antisocial behaviour inside the ground and the throwing of missiles/objects onto the field of play.

Any supporter identified using flares inside the ground or throwing missiles/objects onto the field of play will receive a ban.

Thank you for your continued support and enjoy the game.

Shelbourne Head Coach Damien Duff has a near fully fit squad to choose from ahead of the season opener against Drogheda United tomorrow night at Tolka Park.

Shane Griffin is nursing a muscular injury that has the defender a doubt for the first competitive game of the 2023 League of Ireland campaign. Aside from that Duff’s squad has wintered well.

Duff told ShelbourneFC.ie: “Our two long term injuries are out still, the good news though is that Conor Kane is making progress, he’s back running which gave us all a big boost to see Conor on the grass. He’s brilliant, we all think the world of Conor. It’s really pleasing to see him step up in his recovery.

“Jad Hakiki is still out, listen it’s been a long road for him, he’s doing light work at the moment though. Shane Griffin has a slight muscular problem and will be a doubt for tomorrow. Luke Byrne went off in our last friendly, Luke has been dealing with a knee issue, but he’s ready to go now. Luke, fans know Luke well now, Luke is never a doubt, he is a warrior, he puts his body on the line. Luke is fit and available.”

The Reds developed a compelling rivalry with Drogheda United in 2022, as the Louth club provided a haven for many former Shels players to settle down. Assessing the challenge awaiting his side tomorrow Duff said:

“There’s certainly a rivalry there with Drogheda United, that’s alive and kicking and flared up a few times last year. We’re familiar with them and expect a tough game from Drogheda. This point so early on, start of the season we’re concentrating on ourselves and our game plan and getting it right, we won’t be too focused on the opposition.

“Rivalry is a good thing, but we have to focus on the task at hand, three points, don’t get involved in any shenanigans on the bench or the sideline. Cool and calm heads.

Duff strengthened his squad during the off season with the arrival of Paddy Barrett, Tyreke Wilson, Conor Kearns, Evan Caffrey, Kyle Robinson, Andrew Quinn, and Cian Leavy, while Matty Smith completed a permanent move from Derry. The Reds boss is pleased with how his squad is shaping up:

“In the league there’s always a big turnover in squads, we had 15 out and 15 in before the start of last year, it’s a huge challenge to try and build a team in that scenario. I don’t want to have to do that again, so if I’ve put a year’s work into a player, and they’re going in the right direction, I want to keep them here and keep improving.

“We’ve kept 18 players from 2022. We had 6 out the door and 7 in. It’s left us now with a stronger squad and a much stronger bench. Last year we didn’t always have options off the bench, I don’t think we’ll have that issue this time around with the player’s brought in.

“We’ve a lot up top in terms of attacking players, good options for 10s and then the physicality and size of Sean Boyd, he’s a nightmare for defenders. Kyle Robinson has come in, he’s got raw pace, defenders in this league don’t like that. Then at the back end we’ve made some changes and added reinforcements there in quality players.”

“The additions will help us this year. I think the team growing is a big thing for me, they’re a year older, that experience is vital, people can easily forget we’re still a really young team one of the youngest in the league. Our average age in the squad was the same as UCD, everyone is aware of their age profile but it seemed to be missed that we had a very young group and still do.

“We had some really strong performances particularly at the last round of games last season, which didn’t always turn in to results. We’d be looking to improve on that. Cutting out individual mistakes is a big thing. Being more clinical up the top end. We want to see performances of course and I was happy with the growth of the team across the 2022 season, the big thing now is results. Really good performances, yeah, great but listen I’d be just as happy to win ugly and start putting points on the board from tomorrow.”

The Reds completed their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Galway, across January Duff’s side registered wins against Bray, Longford, Athlone and Drogheda. The Dubliner felt they got what was needed out of pre-season:

“The main aim of pre-season is fitness and conditioning, getting the new bodies up to speed, we need them used to how we play and how we press teams. Aligned with that, it’s good to win games, and the competitive nature of the business is to win games even in pre-season.

“We had good results, we wanted to see the team continue to grow and gel together and I’m pleased with that aspect. You get nothing for friendlies though, they’re quickly forgotten, tomorrow evening under the lights, that’s when the real business starts.”

Shels announced on Thursday afternoon that the club has surpassed our record for season ticket sales.

Attendances in the League of Ireland have dramatically risen since 2019, the last full season with crowds before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since then Shelbourne FC have shown the biggest increase in Ireland, with average attendances at Tolka Park in 2022 up an incredible 172% from 2019. Duff is pleased to see the club on an upward trajectory:

“I’m delighted the season ticket record was broken today,” Duff said.

“I love to see a full Tolka Park. When I look back at old footage and the European nights and I see the place packed, the footage is amazing, seeing the new stand jammed, brilliant.

“I love to see the place alive and bouncing and if I was to say anything to the people who are coming to support us week in, week out, I’d ask them to bring a friend along for a game. It’s a special place. Get your mate down with you on a Friday night or a Saturday afternoon, I think they’ll enjoy it, the league is growing here and we want new people to embrace it.

“We’ll play our part, we need to do it on pitch and give people something to shout about. I just want to see the place full. That’s what it’s all about. I’m passionate about the league and Shels is my club and there’s more than a few times last year that we needed our supporters and they are our 12th man and am positive will continue to be across the season in 2023 as well.”

We are making our annual appeal for support for the Goalden Goals and to see if we can rustle up a few Player Sponsors to make up for one or two we have lost this season.

The cost of sponsoring a player is just €300 and at the end of the season the sponsor receives their player’s match worn shirt and some complimentary tickets to a home game. If you yourself would like to sponsor a player or you know of someone who would, please let us know,

The cost of a Goalden Goal for the season is just €100 and it’s a bit of fun throughout the season with a chance to win €200 cash at each home game. Last season we only sold 60 of the 90 available but with your assistance we are hoping to see the full compliment sold this time around.
