Shelbourne had a hard- fought 2-1 win over Cork City on Friday last, on a night when over a 100 fans returned to Tolka Park.

The win was the Reds’ seventh in a row and they now extend their lead at the top to 11 points over the chasing pack in the SSE Airtricity League First Division.

Goals from Michael O’Connor and Ryan Brennan either side of half time was enough for Shels to get the all important win.

Shels came into this game on the back of a fine away performance away to Wexford FC last time out and remained 8 points clear of Treaty United at the start of play. Shels seem destined for a swift return to the Premier Division, with teams struggling to counteract their high quality attacking play. Cork City on the other hand, had been disappointing after their relegation last season. They sat in 8th place and were hoping to end the reds unbeaten record. Manager Colin Healy would have been boosted by their fine win against Athlone Town last Friday evening. This was far from plan sailing for the Reds.

The hosts started on the front foot dominating possession. In the 2nd minute, Michael O’Connor won an early free-kick following a foul by Cork’s Morrissey. The attacking attitude of Shels was evident, as they looked to get at the Cork backline from wide areas. O’Connor and Farrell showed well in possession. After successive corners and singing from the Shels faithful Cork settled. Holland got in behind the Reds cover, before shooting straight at Clarke, with 6 minutes played. Walker and Baxter combined and Cork began a period of dominating possession. Following good trickery down the right side, JR Wilson won a free-kick which led to an early booking for Cork’s Steven Beattie. Both teams were holding nothing back. You could get a sense with 12 minutes gone that both teams were trying to find their rhythm. Shels centre half Ally Gilchrist was winning everything in the air and without too much fuss. On 15 minutes Rooney got a shot away as the game took shape.

With 20 minutes gone, Cork threatened with O’Brien causing chaos for Shels and drawing a fine stop from Clarke. Shelbourne looked lacklustre with Ryan Brennan giving possession away, much to the frustration of the reds supporters. Striker Michael O’Connor looked our best route to goal. On 23 minutes he mistimed a cross, which looped harmlessly wide.

Cork were growing in confidence and what was noticeable was their persistence with playing out from the back. Coleman and Beattie were showing class in possession, as Shels were continuously being left frustrated. After a moment of misplaced passing by both teams the opening goal nearly arrived as JJ Lunney latched onto a loose ball which flashed just wide, much to the relief of Cork keeper Mark McNulty. With over a half hour gone Ryan Brennan won a free- kick high up the pitch. Dayle Rooney got free down the left, producing fine footwork, before winning a free-kick. The deadlock was finally broken as O’Connor got on the end of the delivery, producing a quality header, with 36 minutes on the clock. Shels looked to press home their advantage and Farrell almost got Brennan in again, luckily for Cork their keeper McNulty came out to command his area. Cork at this stage were struggling to break down Shels, with Poynton and Lunney utilizing their counter-attacks at every opportunity. Shels almost doubled their lead before the break with Brennan hitting a fine volley, following a corner towards goal which was well covered by McNulty. At half-time Shels looked in cruise control. Cork would need to change their style of play, in order to get a result in the 2nd half.

The 2nd half started with Shels immediately threatening. O’Connor had a strike come back off the post and following a corner Shels were unfortunate to see a further effort hit the crossbar. However, Cork would soon equalise when Cian Murphy got on the end of a loose ball, which he dispatched to the bottom left corner, giving Brendan Clarke no chance from just outside the box. Game on. The likes of Murphy and Crowley were beginning to show their class for the visitors, while Shels looked to get more impetus going forward.

Shels retook the lead on 56 minutes, when they won the ball high up the pitch and Ryan Brennan found himself free, before sending a shot low to the bottom right hand corner, past the helpless McNulty. Cork at this stage were rattled and were searching for a positive response with an hour played. Cork were knocking on the door, but Shels continued to keep them at bay. Cork’s Coleman was then booked and the leesiders’ frustrations were beginning to show.

With Shels continuing to pose a threat with Brennan in particular, O’Connor went down injured after a clash in the box. Cork made a change with Whitmarsh being replaced by McGlade in search of an equaliser, with 66 minutes on the clock. Moments later Walsh replaced Holland as Cork were desperate for a response. Shelbourne started retreating as the half wore on and it seemed that there could well be a twist in the tail. With 75 minutes gone Shelbourne were struggling to create, with Cork’s Hakkinen and Morrissey nullifying the ever dangerous O’Connor.

However, Rooney once again found a pocket of space and had a shot well blocked by the Cork defence as the rebels started to tire. Substitute McGlade was then booked when he left one on Wilson, as the game started to boil over. Cork were huffing and puffing without setting the world alight, while Shels seemed happy to shut up shop. Cork boss Healy threw on Kargbo for Murphy, in the hope of finally unlocking the reds rearguard. Shels star Brennan then set up Wilson late on, but his effort drifted harmlessly wide.  Cork pushed forward but were limited to a strike from Morrissey, who flattened to deceive. With 3 minutes added on Shels hung on by the skin of their teeth. McGlade had a fine effort well saved by Clarke, before referee David Dunne blew the full-time whistle. Shels will be delighted with the win, but were made to work for it all the way, by a plucky Cork side. Shels remain on top of the First Division and will play host to Cabinteely next week, while Cork will take much encouragement from their showing and will play host to Treaty United next time out. A great result for the returning Shels faithful.

Shels boss Ian Morris has urged those fans attending Tolka Park for the first time in 18 months tomorrow to “create noise and be electric” as his team faces Cork City.

The Reds are looking for their seventh win in a row after last week’s 1-0 win away to Wexford FC.

Morris, though, is expecting a seriously difficult game between the clubs who he says “both have a massive history.”

“It’s a huge game. There’s always that excitement when the fixture comes in for both clubs and the game is set up to be a big game, especially with fans back.

“They’ve come back after the break and had a decent win in Athlone where you see a lot of energy and their players giving everything to get at you,” he added.

With 100 fans back in to the ground, Morris said he is “hoping the fans can help raise us to another level.”

Shels have missed some key bodies in recent weeks, but the Shels manager has been impressed at the depth in his squad and the players’ team spirit.

“It just shows the quality of the dressing room and how the players have worked hard and knuckled down.

“Everything we do is for the team and you have to take the opportunity and be ready which the players have been every week,” he added.

Morris urged fans to get down to Tolka Park on Saturday too for the WNL game where a successful trial may mean bigger attendances in the coming weeks too.

Shels’ Yoyo Mahdy and Sean Quinn remain a doubt while Denzil Fernandes and Gerardo Bruna are out through injury.

Shelbourne FC is delighted to begin to welcome supporters back for our men’s SSE Airtricity League games from our game against Cork City FC on 25 June, 2021.

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic our supporters have been incredibly resilient and our members will be the first ones back in the ground from this game.

While we await, and encourage members to attend, the results of the WNL test event the next day, we remain unsure over the future capacities after this game, though we hope this is the start of a phased return to a full home game once again.

For the upcoming game against Cork City FC, we will begin to allocate seats to our members alphabetically. 100 eligible attendees will be notified by email of details of attendance in the coming days.

Masks must be worn within the ground and a full list of Covid-19 regulations will be provided to fans to adhere to.

Fears over Shane Farrell’s substitution through injury against Bray were cleared this week as the Shels player passed all tests and has trained this week ahead of another crucial week’s action for the Reds.

Shels travel to Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night looking to maintain their unbeaten season and gap at the top of the SSE Airtricity League First Division.

Despite their fine form, Shels boss Ian Morris said “this is where teams are at their most vulnerable” as teams look to chase his team.

“We have to keep preparing in the right way and the mindset has to be right. This group of players have that in abundance,” Morris said.

Shelbourne were impressive once more with a 4-1 win away to Bray Wanderers last Friday night in the Carlisle Grounds.

Yoyo Mahdy and Sean Quinn, meanwhile, will have fitness tests ahead of Friday’s game.

Wexford will be buoyed by a new management team, including former players Ian Ryan and Lorcan Fitzgerald, and Morris is impressed by the impact they have made since their introduction.

“You can see the effect they’ve had already there and see what Ian is trying to do,” Morris said.

“At Tolka we were able to see how they can hurt you with their pace and energy,” he added.

With fans set to return to Tolka next week in some capacity, Morris said he is “itching” to see their return.

“The small amount of them last Friday even made a difference, so to hear that noise again in Tolka will be special,” he added.

Shels players Denzil Fernandes and Gerardo Bruna continue to miss out through injury while there are no suspensions on the agenda.

Shelbourne have no new injury concerns as they resume their 2021 season on Friday night away to Bray Wanderers.

Shels boss Ian Morris is expecting a “tough task” on Friday against Bray but is excited at the prospect of fans returning.

“I love it, having them start to come back, it’s been a long time coming and you can see it on the TV with the international games.

“The tempo is a lot quicker and I think some players in the matches with crowds seem more focused too. It gives it that bit more of an intensity so I can’t wait to have them here,” he said.

Morris said he is “really pleased with how the players have come back” after the summer break.

“It’s really important that we keep the momentum we’ve had from the start and keep the tempo that we have had recently.

“The first ten games don’t count for much if we don’t do that but we have prepared well for Friday,” Morris added.

Morris was adamant that Bray’s position in the league is “a false position” and is expecting a really difficult game in the Carlisle Grounds on Friday night after the two sides played out a 3-3 draw at the start of the season.

“Every game they have had has been on a knife-edge decided by the odd kick of a ball so it’s important that we’ve prepared right and approach the game in the right way,” he added.

Shels remain without Denzil Fernandes and Gerardo Bruna through injuries and have no suspensions.

Shelbourne teams up with The Alzheimer Society of Ireland for powerful Football Memories events, Packie Bonner lined up as first guest

  • One Football Memories event to be held each month
  • Range of activities planned for events open to those on the dementia journey

June 09, 2021: Shelbourne Football Club and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (The ASI) are delighted to announce an exciting new partnership and programme of events called Football Memories. Through our Football Memories programme we aim to increase awareness of dementia, reduce the stigma surrounding it, and support communities to become more dementia inclusive.

The first Football Memories event will take place with special guest former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Packie Bonner on June 24, 2021 at 16:00.

These fantastic events will allow people living with dementia to participate in a fun and stimulating experience, using football as a unifying topic of engagement. Reminiscence will play a key part in these events with images, stories and personal experiences being shared. We aim to create a welcoming environment for those living with dementia to share their own sporting memories with us, and each other.

The following is part of the partnership:

  • One Football Memories event will be held each month for 12 months
  • Programme will commence in June 2021
  • Events held remotely until safe to meet as a group
  • When safe to do so, the events will then be held in Tolka Park, and will include a tour of the ground and stories of historic games, players etc

Shelbourne FC will host each of the events and the programme will include recalling of great stories from former players and fans, engaging quizzes, and the viewing of old footage and clips from famous footballing moments.

Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of conditions that impact brain function. It can have an effect on memory, thinking, language and the ability to carry out everyday tasks.

There are many conditions which fall under the umbrella of “dementia”. Alzheimer’s is the most common of these. Vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy Bodies, and Frontotemporal dementia are other types of dementia.

There are 64,000 people with dementia in Ireland and the number of people with the condition will more than double in the next 25 years to over 150,000 by 2045.*

There are also 11,000 new cases of dementia diagnosed in Ireland each year. That’s at least 30 people every day and anyone can get dementia – even people in their 30s/40s/50s.**

Shelbourne FC has recently been affected by dementia having lost former players Tony Dunne and Tommy Carroll recently, both of whom lived with the condition after their playing days.

The issue has become more and more prevalent in the game, and both SFC and The ASI have identified the positive power of football to help raise awareness for the conditions while also creating fun, engaging and impactful experiences for those living with dementia.

Though we wish to enjoy these special events in future at Tolka Park, we will be beginning the series virtually and we would be delighted to begin registration for the events via shelbournefootballmemories@alzheimer.ie now.

These events are specifically designed for persons living with dementia to attend and enjoy. Registration is open to all, however we especially encourage those on the dementia journey, along with their family carers, to register for the event and to participate in what is sure to be a series of wonderful evenings at Shelbourne FC with our friends at The ASI.

Shelbourne Football Club CEO David O’Connor said: “We’re really excited to begin this new programme of events in close partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Ireland. The Society is known throughout Ireland for their invaluable work that has impacted countless lives and we hope these events can add to that using the power of football as a unifying force. At Shelbourne FC, we want to create an environment where everyone is welcome and these events go further to creating that. Our work so far with the ASI has shown to us how impactful these events will be and we hope supporters can experience that along with us.”

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Donal Murphy, Operations Manager said: “It is wonderful that we are now in a position to introduce the concept of Sporting Memories into Ireland. These international programmes aim to provide reminiscence therapy for People living with Dementia and are enjoyable events for all. This is an initiative we were exploring and so we were delighted when Shelbourne contacted us with the concept of a ‘Football Memories’ programme. The programme will involve former players speaking about their careers, sharing memorabilia and showing clips of memorable matches they would have played in over the years. These programmes have been in place in Scotland for over a decade with Scotish Football clubs working in conjunction with Alzheimer Scotland. We are very excited to partner with Shelbourne FC on their ‘Reds Together’ goals and it is our pleasure to support them in their work to make a positive impact to the lives of People living with Dementia and their caregivers”

Shels line up Dublin Devils friendly to celebrate Dublin Pride 2021

  • Shels team to feature Tony Sheridan, Stuey Byrne and Ian Morris
  • First game since 2019 after 2020 edition cancelled due to Covid-19

Shelbourne FC is excited to announce the fourth annual Dublin Pride Festival game against the Dublin Devils, the capital’s LGBTQ+ inclusive football club.

The 2020 edition of the game was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic but we’re delighted to be able to celebrate diversity in football once more this year.

A Shelbourne team made up of well-known club figures including Tony Sheridan, Stuey Byrne, Alan Cawley, Ian Morris, Seana Cooke and Shelbourne staff and much more will face the Devils in a game to bring inclusiveness in the game to the fore.

The game will take place on June 19, 2021 at Tolka Park with a 14:00 kick off.

As a game also marking the Football v Homophobia campaign, we will celebrate LGBTQ+ participation in sport and diversity in our community.

The first game against the Dublin Devils was held in 2017 and has grown from strength to strength since.

It’s absence was felt last year amid the Covid-19 pandemic and despite ongoing restrictions on crowd numbers, we were keen to make sure the game went ahead this year.

Shelbourne FC will abide by government guidelines in relation to crowd attendance but we will stream the game publicly to help celebrate diversity in the game with as many people as possible.

The Pride Cup is part of Shelbourne’s Reds Together programme which involves several ongoing projects helping Shels engage within its Dublin community.

Shelbourne Communications Officer Gavin White said: “It’s fantastic to see the return of this brilliant game at Tolka Park this year again. It was extremely disappointing last year among many frustrations at losing our annual game to celebrate diversity in the game but it makes its return all the better. Shelbourne Football Club is a place welcome to absolutely everyone and this game is a perfect example of this ethos. The Devils’ progress since 2005 has been astonishing and we hope they can continue to grow their wonderful community.”

Dublin Devils FC Chair John Coary said: “As a club we are delighted to have the opportunity to play at Tolka Park again and to line up against some true Shelbourbe heroes. The Pride Cup is a really important event in the Dublin Pride calendar, in helping to promote LGBT+ inclusion in sport, and it’s great to see it return this year. The support that Shelbourbe FC have shown us over the years has been truly amazing and we’re very grateful for their continued support and friendship. That support has been instrumental in allowing us to grow as a club and allowed us to offer an essentiall sporting outlet to the LGBT+ community here in Dublin.”
