SHELBOURNE 3 (Ryan Brennan 50′, Ciarán Kilduff 85′, Oscar Brennan 93′)

GALWAY UTD 0

SHELS DOWN NINE-MAN GALWAY

Shels picked up another three points at Tolka Park on Friday evening following a 3-0 win over nine-man Galway United.

The first half was a cagey affair with both sides struggling to create many clear cut chances. However, the second half was pulsating with Conor Barry almost giving Galway the lead three minutes in, only to be denied low by Colin McCabe. Shels punished them two minutes later when Ryan Brennan’s effort was blocked, only to get deflected back into his path. He made no mistake second time around, firing into the top corner from 18 yards.

Things went from bad to worse for Galway with three minutes of madness starting in the 63rd minute when Dara Costello saw a straight red for something he said to the referee. Just three minutes later and the visitors were down to nine men after Stephen Walsh, already on a yellow for petulantly slamming the ball to the ground, picked up his second booking following a late challenge on Aidan Friel.

That effectively ended the game but there was still time for Ciaran Kilduff to slot home Alex O’Hanlon’s through ball five minutes from time, before Oscar Brennan found the bottom corner from 30 yards with the last kick of the game.

A regular in the Shelbourne team this year, defender Luke Byrne says he has finally got what he was “craving” with the Reds so far this season.

After a couple of injuries in his previous spell at Shamrock Rovers, Byrne is coming into two home games on the back of two clean sheets with Shels and says he has loved playing in Tolka Park where he says “the atmosphere has been really good.”

The Howth man has been unavailable for just one game including pre-season in 2019 and says the team are looking to reward fans for the support they have received this season, most notably in their previous two outings.

“Away against Drogheda, you could hear the noise from the shed end, it was a great crowd and it’s something the players feed off. We’re looking to give them something to enjoy and hopefully we can have that consistently to help drive us home,” he says.

With a 1-0 win over Bray Wanderers, and a scoreless draw away to Drogheda, Byrne believes the team’s “identity is beginning to show”, but has been pleased by a much improved defensive display.

“Our shape has been much improved, in and out of possession, pressing at the right times, keeping the right spaces between each other. It comes from hard work on the training pitch,” he says. “We were punished for mistakes previously which we’ve been culpable for, including myself, but concentration is becoming more consistent for the 90 minutes.”

The centre-half thinks “an inconsistent start” for the Reds to the league has been “frustrating” but is excited about the two upcoming home games to continue on recent good form.

“We knew it would take time to gel, new staff and players but we’re starting to show more and more in games, more than just 15 and 20 minute flashes,” he adds.

Byrne, who is studying for a business and management degree, says he has been feeling at home, enjoying Tolka Park, a ground which he has always liked playing in.

“With the four stands, it makes for a good atmosphere, like against Bray which was great. We want to deliver more good results for that crowd,” he says. “It’s something the manager has driven home to us too, give the fans something, Shels fans who have been there for years.”

Two home games against Limerick FC and Galway United represent two huge games at a crucial stage of this year’s SSE Airtricity League First Division, but Byrne believes “we’ve nothing to fear.”

“We’ve played everyone bar Limerick so we know where we’re at, if you’re scared going into these big games then you’re at the wrong club. We want to get promoted and come out of these games the right way. We need to embrace these must win games,” he says. “We’re confident we have the players to compete.”

It is with great sadness that we have heard of the recent passing of Denise Lynch, who along with her husband Aidan, have been great supporters and sponsors of the club for many years.

Aidan is a former employee of the club and is also a former manager of our senior women’s team. In recent years Denise was a frequent visitor to Tolka Park in her role as Protocol Officer to President Michael D Higgins.

A lovely lady who has left us far too soon. We send our deepest condolences to Aidan and to Denise’s family and friends at this very sad time. May she rest in peace.

Shelbourne travel to United Park tonight to face Drogheda United hoping to build on last Friday’s win at home to Bray Wanderers. The Reds have a history of bringing good crowds to United Park and player Karl Moore believes the connection and passion between the fans and the players is the reason you play the game.” Having come off the bench with an assist and a goal away to Galway United in the first game of the season, Moore has been an ever present in the team and is relishing the rest of season in a division he says is “crazy.”

After a run of several starts, he says that “you can’t take it for granted” and the attacking midfielder believes the “quality we have in depth in the squad” is driving him and the whole team on with younger players “eager to learn.”

“You’ve got players who can play multiple positions while other people can play in their positions. It’s healthy, yeah you can get frustrated if you don’t play but that drives you on in training. Everyone knows the manager is not afraid to make changes so you have to be at it every week,” he says.

A late arrival last season, scoring a hat-trick in his first game against Longford Town, Moore has certainly enjoyed his time so far at Tolka Park, and under manager Ian Morris, he says he has been further pushed on at the club. “I really enjoy the training sessions, it’s not the same stuff over and over again, it’s always different, something new and keeps you focused and interested. There will always be a purpose looking towards the game,” he says.

Moore believes the competitiveness and recent addition of GPS monitors for players has been “beneficial to a team as a whole.” “You know if you’re not putting it in, it will be known so it’s really interesting and I’m enjoying it,” he adds.

That competitiveness has also extended itself to the SSE Airtricity League First Division this year with just two points separating the first six teams. “The league is mad this year, everyone is taking points off each other including the bottom side. You have to be at it, fully concentrated and having respect for each opponent or you will be turned over. It’s fairly relentless, previously if you made some mistakes you might not be punished but so far this year we were,” he says.

Ahead of tonight’s game in Drogheda, Shelbourne will be heading to United Park on the back of a 1-0 win at home to Bray Wanderers. A game which saw Shels fans together in the Main Stand of Tolka Park, which Moore says was “great to see.”

“The crowd in the corner were really loud and it doesn’t go unnoticed. Same in Galway, especially with the manner of the win there. It’s great for the players, great for the fans. We want to keep the atmosphere going and get the crowd going in every game,” the Dubliner says.

Positionally, Moore has been enjoying playing in a forward position where he “can effect the game” and feels with a more possession based game under the stewardship of Ian Morris, he feels “more involved” than ever. “Leaning towards possession suits me as a player rather than the more physical style and it helps me to prosper. It’s very enjoyable to be involved and I feel as if things are starting to click now, we’re eradicating mistakes, and it’s more of what we’re about,” he says.

Statement from Shelbourne FC

Shelbourne FC has been advised by Dublin City Council that the planned redevelopment of Dalymount Park will go ahead irrespective of whether the redevelopment of Phibsborough Shopping Centre proceeds. Ideally both redevelopments would proceed in parallel and deliver a major rejuvenation to the Phibsborough area as well as to Dalymount Park.

We endorse the views expressed over the past few days by our colleagues in Bohemian FC asking that the various parties involved in the redevelopment of the Shopping Centre reach an agreement which will allow the original redevelopment plan to proceed.

Both Shelbourne FC and Bohemian FC remain determined to see through the redevelopment of Dalymount Park into a state of the art football stadium which encompasses civic and community facilities that will be at the disposal of all who reside in the Phibsborough area.

BRAY WANDERERS 0

PROFESSIONAL SHELS SECURE IMPORTANT VICTORY OVER BRAY

A game of two halves for Shelbourne saw the Dubliners secure a 1-0 win over Bray Wanderers at Tolka Park on Friday evening.

The home side dominated the first half and took the lead through Lorcan Fitzgerald’s penalty before showing they can be disciplined defensively to deny the visitors anything from the game.

The first quarter of the game saw the ball played end-to-end. However, Shels were gradually turning the screw and began to dominate their opponents. The pressure eventually told when Paul Keegan needlessly fouled James English near the byline, and Lorcan Fitzgerald stepped up to smash the resulting penalty into the top corner to give Shels a deserved lead going into the break.

Both sides experienced a quiet start to the second half but Bray began to grow into the game as it wore on. However, other than Dylan McGlade’s free-kick cannoning back off the crossbar, Bray struggled to really trouble their opponents.

Shels have lost lead’s in the recent past but they impressed tonight to secure all three points.
