Defender Sean Byrne’s football career started at Belvedere and Home Farm football clubs. Having joined Bohemians in early 2008, he made his first team debut away to Galway United in April 2009.

He signed for Shelbourne, managed by Dermot Keely, at the start of 2010 and made 29 appearances, scoring twice that year. The following season, Sean made 12 league appearances with the Reds, six from the bench. He also had three appearances in the EA Cup, one in the Leinster Senior Cup and five in the FAI Cup, including in the final against Sligo Rovers, which Shelbourne lost in a penalty shootout after extra time. Following promotion to the Premier Division for 2012, Sean made 13 league appearances, one in each of the EA and LS Cups and three in the FAI Cup.

He left Tolka Park at the end of that season and trialled with Athlone Town, managed by Roddy Collins. He did not, however, sign for the Midlanders until July ’13 and was part of the team that won the First Division title and promotion. He played in 17 Premier Division games for Athlone before leaving at the end of August, because of work commitments.

He signed for Tolka Rovers at the start of 2015 but returned to League of Ireland action with Waterford United in January 2016, where he made 15 league appearances. Later that year, he joined Leinster Senior League team St. Mochtas, where he picked up a LSL Senior Division winners medal.

To celebrate Dublin LGBTQ Pride 2017, a Shelbourne XI will play the Dublin Devils at 2pm on June 17th at Tolka Park.

The Shelbourne team will include club legends such as Stuart Byrne, Gary Howlett, Tony Sheridan, Mark Rutherford and Kevin Doherty.

Dublin LGBTQ Pride 2017 runs from June 16th-24th and Shelbourne FC will fly the rainbow flag at Tolka Park for the duration of the festival.

Speaking about the event Devils Chairperson John McAree said “We’re delighted to visit one of Ireland’s most famous and successful Football Clubs. They are one of the giants of the Irish game. As Ireland’s first gay football team we’re proud and excited to play against this Shelbourne F.C. XI team. It’s a great start to our celebration of Dublin Pride 2017 and a brilliant step for both teams as we strive to stamp out homophobia in football.”

John McGouran of Shelbourne FC speaking of this ground-breaking fixture said ‘The ‘Shels in the Community’ initiative embraces the wonderful diversity that exists within our local community, and we are delighted to welcome Dublin Devils F.C. to Tolka Park to celebrate the Dublin LGBTQ Pride 2017. Dublin Devils have made tremendous strides in combating homophobia in football, a cause that is fully supported by all connected with Shelbourne FC, and we are very much looking forward to the match on 17th June.
