Shels boss Ian Morris says his side’s focus remains firmly on a “really tough game” against Treaty United on Friday night.

The Reds know a win will secure their return to the Premier Division and the SSE Airtricity League First Division title but are fully aware at the task at hand.

“The lads know how big a game it is and that we have had two seriously tough battles against Treaty already. We’re in for a really difficult game but we’ve been keeping clean sheets and scoring at the top end of the pitch which is firing so we’re in a good place,” Morris told shelbournefc.ie.

“There’s such competition for places up top too. Stan, Dayle and Yoyo came in last week then we have Eric Molloy, Alex Nolan, Alex Cetiner bringing that competition.

“Everyone knows we’ll need everyone, whether they’re starting or coming from the sidelines, that we’ll need everyone firing,” Morris said.

Morris said he was pleased with the resilience shown in Stradbrook last Friday where his side came out 2-0 winners and that his players “stood up to be counted once more.”

“We’ll need to be tough at times tomorrow, we’ll need calmness and have the ability to finish at the top end. It’s set there for someone to be a hero,” he added.

“Our preparation has stayed the same. Everyone knows their roles for a difficult game,” he said.

The Shels Manager was quick to praise the club’s fans for their support over the year and said they will be crucial tomorrow.

“I’m sure every single Shels fan wants to be there tomorrow and we’ll need their noise – even before kick off,” he said.

In team news, Morris said Denzil Fernandes, Gerardo Bruna and JJ Lunney are all back running with the aim of seeing action before the season is out.

The trio will remain out tomorrow though there are no suspensions and everyone else is fit.

The game is sold out and will be live on LOITV with commentary from Steven Doody and Darren Cleary.

Shelbourne boss Ian Morris said it was “frustrating” not having a game last week, but said him and his side are raring to go again Friday night ahead of a big game in Stradrbrook.

The Reds travel to Cabinteely looking for another step on their 2021 season after a great win in Cork last time out.

“We’ve kept the players fresh – preparation has been good, we’ve worked hard expecting different scenarios in the game but we need to make sure we’re at the levels we’ve been hitting in recent weeks,” Morris told shelbournefc.ie.

The Shels Manager said he was impressed by his side’s win over Cork, especially considering the large home crowd in attendance.

“It was the best atmosphere away from home we’ve seen this season and the boys dealt with it really well. By the end, our fans were louder than the Cork fans and it was a great night,” he said.

“We’ve had a fantastic away following all season and we need to be fully focused tomorrow to give them something to excite,” he added.

Morris said his side are under no illusions as to task at hand and is expecting a Cabinteely side to raise their game.

“We need to work. They have a big squad and can make a number of changes. Pat Devlin will have them fired up. There’s no doubt they’ll put up a tough test,” he said.

“This is a huge game for us. It’s there for everyone to see,” Morris said.

Shelbourne will be without JJ Lunney, Gerardo Bruna, Alex Cetiner and Alex Nolan though have a fully fit squad elsewhere with no suspensions.

Morris said his team selections are “getting harder every week” and knows competition for places is tremendous.

Shels Manager Ian Morris said he has been pleased to have almost a full roster of players in training this week ahead of a crucial game in Cork on Friday night.

Shels travel to face Cork City at Turner’s Cross in the SSE Airtricity League First Division on Friday night with just six games to go in the league.

Morris once more praised fans who have been “scrambling to get tickets” for matches all season and giving the Reds strong support all season.

“There hasn’t been a better set of fans all season on Friday nights – they’ve been falling over themselves getting tickets all season and it’s fantastic to see,” Morris said.

New signing Stanley Anaebonam has had a full week of training is available for selection on Friday night.

“Stan gives us another option. He can finish with both feet – he’s quick and can deliver too so it’s good to have options,” he added.

“Everyone is chomping at the bit to get on but for us it is a matter of looking at what suits the game best.

“A lot of football has been played on the pitch there over the last week so we’ll see how it is and consider that too,” he added.

Morris said it is an important weekend for the league and says how the table sits after Friday night will signal a lot about how the season will pan out.

“Cork have been on a decent run. They’re trying to make the play-offs while we have our own objective which we are focused on,” Morris told shelbournefc.ie.

Shelbourne has no suspensions for the game Friday night while JJ Lunney and Gerardo Bruna continue to miss out with injury. .

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL IRELAND & SHELBOURNE FC

Shelbourne FC and Amnesty team up for Afghan women

  • Shelbourne FC’s women’s team dedicate their quarter final against Cork City to the women of Afghanistan, 4 September, kick off at 2pm in Tolka Park
  • Inspired by Afghanistan’s women’s football team, many of whom have reportedly fled the country after Taliban take over
  • Jersey will bear message of solidarity as thousands still at risk in Afghanistan, with no safe way to flee. See here for images of players and the jersey
  • Spokespeople available; media access before and after the game can be arranged

Shelbourne FC, in partnership with Amnesty International Ireland, are dedicating their upcoming FAI Women’s Cup quarter final match to the Afghan women’s football team, and all the women and girls of Afghanistan who face an uncertain future.

Many of the Afghan women’s football team have reportedly fled following the Taliban seizure of Kabul. Many sports were banned when the Taliban were last in power, with some sporting grounds infamously becoming places of execution.

Shelbourne FC play Cork City FC Women in the Quarter Final of the EVOKE.ie FAI Women’s Cup this Saturday at 2pm in Tolka Park, Dublin. The Shelbourne team will play the match in jerseys that have temporarily swapped out their main sponsor (Hamptons Homes) logo for the message: “Solidarity with Afghan Women’ alongside the ‘Amnesty candle’.

“There are thousands of people at risk of reprisals in Afghanistan. Women and girls in particular experienced brutal oppression and discrimination under the Taliban during their last period in power, and many women athletes, journalists, activists and so many others have now fled the country in fear for their lives,” said Colm O’Gorman, Executive Director for Amnesty International  Ireland.

“The international community has to do everything in its power to ensure people in Afghanistan and those who are trying to leave are protected. Acts of solidarity like this with Shelbourne FC are so important to keep the pressure on and to make sure the people of Afghanistan, and Afghan women in particular, know they will not be forgotten.

“The Taliban have said they have changed. But our recent on-the-ground investigation into the massacre of Hazara men in Ghazni province is proof that the Taliban’s capacity for murder and torture has not diminished. There are countless reports of them going door to door searching for people, and information emerging of abductions and killings.”

Shelbourne FC women’s team decided that they needed to make this public show of solidarity after hearing many of the harrowing stories and reports of fear coming from the Afghan female population. This was compounded by seeing reports that many of Afghan women’s national team have fled the country. As a club with many young female players and senior internationals, they found these reports particularly affecting, and say it is important for young girls in Ireland and for their Youth Academy female players to see this show of solidarity.

“As a team and Club, we felt it was extremely important to show our solidarity for Afghan women who are facing difficult times. Seeing reports that many of the Afghan national team fled in such circumstances really brought their situation home to us. Playing football for your national team is one of our greatest ambitions as players and for the Afghan players to have this threatened in an even remote way is hard to comprehend. We are playing today with them in mind and are there to show we are standing and playing with them,” said Pearl Slattery, Team Captain.

“We wanted to show solidarity with the Afghan women’s football team, who are such an inspiration for building up a team in the face of years of discrimination and threats. We hope they know they are not forgotten and we stand with them,” said David O’Connor, CEO of Shelbourne FC.

“When you are faced with a humanitarian catastrophe like we see in Afghanistan, all of us have to play our part. That’s why we have chosen to make this stand, so young Irish girls and Shelbourne FC Youth Academy female players will see role models in our Women’s National League team making this strong stance of solidarity for women in Afghanistan.”

Background:

Shelbourne FC women’s team plays in the FAI Women’s National League and is home to several Republic of Ireland senior and underage internationals. Shelbourne FC plays their home games in Tolka Park and also have over 100 female youth players in the Shelbourne FC Youth Academy based in North Dublin.

Amnesty International Ireland, as part of 11 other organisations, have launched a campaign to bring at least 1,000 Afghan refugees to Ireland, amongst other calls.  Amnesty International revealed how the Taliban were responsible for a massacre of nine ethnic Hazara men after taking control of Ghazni province in July 2021. The brutal killings likely represent a tiny fraction of the total death toll inflicted by the Taliban following recent territorial gains to date, as the group have cut mobile phone service in many of the areas they have captured, preventing information from emerging

Shels boss Ian Morris said his side will “thrive” off the increased crowd tomorrow night as the Reds return to Tolka Park for the visit of Wexford FC.

Shels return after a two week break and Morris said his side is “chomping at the bit” to get going again with just seven games to go in the season.

“We’ve used the break to our advantage getting everyone fit again after three weeks or so with the Covid situation.

“We’ve played games behind closed doors and come back now aware we need to win games,” Morris told shelbournefc.ie.

Shels are welcoming an increased capacity to the ground on Friday night for the SSE Airtricity League First Division clash and Morris said the players feed off it.

“You can feel it in the different levels each week. First starting with the 100 and now increasing to more. It gives the players such confidence so I’d urge everyone to really get behind these players tomorrow,” he said.

Morris said he has been impressed by Wexford in recent weeks and said he expects to face a side with “nothing to fear.”

“We’re in good shape and have the positive of being able to choose match winners from the bench as well as the starting team so we’ll need everyone for the  run-in,” he said.

Midfielder Gerardo Bruna has been back running and doing some pitch work, which Morris said has been “amazing to see” and has been good for the dressing room.

Bruna will continue to miss out though, as will Denzil Fernandes and JJ Lunney, who has made good progress since his injury against Galway United.

Shels have no suspensions to face going into the game.

Tickets are available now at shelbournefc.ie while all members will be able to gain access with their season tickets.
