Wexford Youths 1 (Eric Molloy 93′)
Shelbourne 0
Shelbourne started the game a little quicker than the home side but it was Broaders who was the first to fire off a shot after 5 minutes but was comfirtably dealt with by Murray in the Shels goal. The early stages of the game were hampered by a swirling wind in the South East venue but both sides didn’t let this affect them. Shelbourne forced a corner after 23 minutes and luckily for the home side the resulting shot on goal was deflecting into the grateful arms of Doyle.
Eric Molloy made great headway down the left hand side who squared the ball to the onrushing Shortt but his effort flew over the bar. Another combination between Broaders and Furlong, but the Rosslare man opened his body up too much and his effort was no threat to the Shels goaltender.
Youths were beginning to get in the asendency towards the end of the half and just before the whistle blew for the break, the impressive Peter Higgins fed a brilliantly weighted thrrough ball to Furlong whos effort was denied by the feet of Murray.
The second half was a lot more open, and after 52 minutes, the exciting Dylan Connolly broke into Youths box but he shot over. After 65 minutes, Darren Tinnelly raced down the left wing and was unlucky that Cantwell denied his goal bound effort with a clearing header. Good play down the Youths left between Derrmody and Broaders teed up Furlong but his diving header went wide.
Shelbourne were looking very threatening on the counter attack and on more than one occasion broke with numbers and another effort, this time by Lee Murtagh, was cleared off the Youths line, by Craig Shortt. On 83 minutes, Shelbourne went on the counter attack again. A slightly overhit ball out of the Shels defence was enough to tempt Graham Doyle to run 30 yards out of his box. The keeper missed the ball but was grateful that defender Stephen Last read the danger and saved his captains blushes. On 87 minutes Shane Keegan made an attacking triple substitution that was to change the game.
Sean Skelly missed the last few weeks through injury, but it was the Dublin mans 93rd minute corner that deceived Murray in the Shels goal, and found the unmarked Eric Molloy on the back post, who used a combination of chest and shoulder to force tha ball over the line to the jubilation of the Ferrycarrig faithful.

Wexford Youths v Shelbourne
SSE Airtricity League – First Division
Ferrycarrig Park – Fri, April 25th – KO 8.00pm
The second series of games in the SSE Airtricity League, Division One starts for Shelbourne on Friday, with a trip down the east coast for their game with Wexford Youths at Ferrycarrig Park. Kick-Off is scheduled for 8.00pm.
Last Friday night saw the Reds defeat bottom club Cobh Ramblers 2-0 (Murtagh & Connolly) to remain unbeaten for the season so far and still top of the table. The score didn’t really reflect the possession and chances for Shelbourne, who might have scored a few more goals on another night.
By all accounts, Wexford Youths were unlucky to be on the end of a 0-1 score line last week-end, having had a fair share of possession, but had come up against a strong Galway rear guard and ‘keeper to keep them at bay – and the only goal of the game coming from Ryan Manning just after the hour mark.
Wexford remain in joint second place in the league, with Longford Town, on 10 points from three wins and a draw after the first seven games.
Speaking after the Cobh game, manager Johnny McDonnell gave this thoughts “We knew it was going to be a difficult game with Cobh coming off a good draw against Waterford and us being down a few players, but with the squad we have, it was important that we kept a clean sheet – and we got the victory. We could have gone one down before anything happened, but I think we could have got four or five in the end”
On the Wexford game and the second series of games generally, McDonnell continued It’s the start of a new set of games and we’ll start afresh again. We now know everyone and everyone knows us. We only play it one way – we’re not afraid to take it down and pass it. The pitches will be getting better coming into the good weather, so we’ll just keep going the way we’re going”.
Shelbourne go into Friday’s game with no suspensions.
John Sullivan has returned to training following his leg injury, but it’s unlikely that he’ll be named in the starting eleven. Jordan Keegan is also a worry as is Willo McDonagh (who left the pitch early last week with a slight knock to his knee).
