At our recent home match against Peamount United, an individual was heard to have directed misogynistic abuse at an opposition player, including the use of a homophobic term.

The incident was reported and having been made aware of this incident, we immediately contacted Peamount United to offer our apologies to the player.

We have since added an additional security presence, specifically briefed to identify anyone engaging in discriminatory abuse and with instructions that anyone doing so should be ejected from the ground.

We have reported the incident to An Garda Síochána and have been endeavouring to identify the individual from CCTV footage.

The Club will not tolerate any discriminatory verbal abuse in Tolka Park and any individual that we can identify will receive a lifetime ban from the ground. There is no place for this kind of abuse in football – on or off the pitch and we wish to apologize again to the player.

Shelbourne FC is an inclusive club and we know that our supporters share our desire to ensure that everybody can enjoy the game without being subject to discriminatory abuse of any kind.

Shelbourne FC Head Coach Damien Duff says the players will show Bonagee United the respect they deserve ahead of the Reds trip north for the FAI Cup clash on Friday.

A strong travelling support will make the trip to Dry Arch Park for the game with Bonagee United.

The Donegal side will be buoyed having secured their first ever win in the competition in the first round.

Tony McNamee hit the net twice as Bonagee United sent Pike Rovers packing with a comfortable 6-0 win in the FAI Cup.

The former Finn Harps man scored either side of half-time as the Ulster Senior League side secured safe passage to the next round to set up a date with Shels.

Duff told Shelbournefc.ie he is wary of underestimating the opposition: “We’ve watched the footage of them, they’re still an unknown quantity. We’ll treat this the same way go into every league game, I’m not one to disrespect opposition, the beauty of the cup is matches like these, we know the expectation is on us, and we will be ready for a very difficult game.

“I know it’s a big occasion for both clubs, and we’re looking forward to it, it’s a great competition and we just have to focus on our job and what we have to do, and try not to get caught up on the occasion.”

The Reds head into this one off the back of the 1-1 draw with Bohs in the Dublin Derby, Duff was pleased with the performance and praised the character shown by the players to overcome the obstacles thrown at them, Duff said: “It was a great point, our best of the season. In those circumstances, to lose Aaron O’Driscoll and Luke Byrne early on, to concede a poor goal, to go a man down with JR’s red card, and to still produce a performance and get a result, it was a very good response to the Drogheda loss.”

The Shels boss also spoke of the special atmosphere created by the fans at Tolka Park a week ago, and paid tribute to the supporters involved in creating the incredible display pre-game. Duff told Shelbournefc.ie: “It was a special night, the atmosphere at Tolka is something that will stick with me, the supporters display was very moving. That message, it’s simple but so important and it touches so many people: ‘Mind yourself, mind your mates, mind your family’.”

“There was an amazing picture of the fans display in the Riverside stand, Eoin Smith took the photo. It’s a powerful message and the picture sums up what this club is about. I got Eoin’s picture blown up and printed, it’s going to hang pride of place on the office wall.”

“It was an emotional occasion, we honoured people who passed away from Shels, and for Bohs, they are mourning the sad loss of Derek ‘Mono’ Monaghan. A person who was such an important part of their club and culture, I want to pass on my condolences to his family and everyone involved at his club. “

Shels will be without Dan Hawkins and Mark Coyle who remain sidelined with injury, the game will come too soon for Luke Byrne and Aaron O’Driscoll who are also unavailable due to injury.

Shelbourne Head Coach Damien Duff is looking for a response from his players as the Reds gear up to face rivals Bohemian FC on Friday August 19th at Tolka Park in the SSE Airtricity League.

Duff has given Sean Boyd every chance to prove his fitness, the Reds top scorer was taken off against Drogheda United, a groin injury brought an early end to his night as the Reds fell to a 3-1 loss at United Park a week ago.

“Boydy is one of a number of players who’ve put their body on the line for Shels, people don’t realise it, lads playing with injuries, doing everything they can to be out there, playing through pain, the desire to represent the club and work for their teammates is pulling guys through. That’s a testament to the character in the squad.”

Jad Hakiki moved a step closer to full fitness and returned to the bench a week ago, the youngster could make an appearance against Bohs at Tolka, but Duff is eager to give him time to fully heal, he told Shelbournefc.ie: “Jad is still a bit away, was good to get him back on the grass and tog out the last day, but we have to give him the time he needs to get right and not rush him, particularly because his injury was brought on by a load issue.”

The Reds begin this round of games a point and a place behind their Dublin rivals, but with a game in hand. Bohs will be eager to get back to winning ways having slumped to successive defeats to Dundalk and Sligo Rovers.

Duff told Shelbournefc.ie he’s only concerned about his team and wants to see a response after the disappointing defeat a week ago: “Monday and Tuesday in training, the boys were on it. We had a review of the game, it wasn’t pretty as you can imagine.

“The lads know what’s expected and the standards we have, we didn’t hit them against Drogheda, you can lose football games, but it’s not good enough to lose it because the other team are hungrier or had more desire.

“We knew what Drogheda would bring, we knew lads on their team would come out with a point to prove to this club and to me, we were prepared for that bite, and we didn’t match it.”

The Reds go into this one having drawn once, and lost twice to Bohs this season, and the Shels boss is acutely aware of what a win would mean to the supporters:

“This is a massive Dublin derby, you don’t have to be involved in the league long to feel the tension, could even go stronger, and call it what it is, the dislike, there’s obviously a lot of history there down the years.

“The players probably feel they owe the fans after the last day, they’ve been brilliant with us, behind us all season, and we want to respond to last week for ourselves, show what we can do, and also to show the fans as well and repay them for their support.

“It’s the kind of fixture where you don’t have to look too much into team talks for motivation, it’s a massive derby, I think from 9:45pm last Friday night, the players have all the motivation they need, they won’t need a speech or a video, they’ll want to go out there, raring to go and show what they can do.

“The games we’ve played so far this season against Bohs, the two in Dalymount, I thought we deserved more out of those games, but listen, that’s in the past, this is our last crack at them, and we want to get the win.

Shels will be without Mark Coyle and Dan Hawkins who remain sidelined with injury, otherwise Duff has a full squad to choose from with no suspensions due to be served.

The Reds trained this evening for the final time before they kick off their UEFA Champions League campaign.

The full squad came through the final session with no injuries, leaving Noel King with a full squad to choose from.

Analyst Ciaran King has helped prep the squad for the challenge of facing the Slovenian side ZNK Pomurje, with video clips and info on the opponents.

Streaming

The club also received confirmation today that the game will be live streamed for free, and available to watch in Ireland. Kick off is at 4:30pm (Irish time), with the stream online from 4:25pm.

The will be available on https://nzs.si

The Reds will have to contend with hostile conditions at the Fazanerija Stadium with the mercury set to rise to 35 degrees by the time the game kick-offs.

King told Shelbournefc.ie: “No doubts. The big doubt is selection, a few people have little knocks but nobody’s going to be stopped from playing in this, everybody wants to be part of it.

“There’s a great spirit amongst this group, it’s trying to maintain that spirit on the pitch in difficult circumstances and against a team who are accustomed to qualifying every year. It’s a challenge in itself.

“We’ll talk about the game tonight and there’ll be nothing else in our mind other than the match and how we can progress into the final.”

King knows the Reds face a formidable challenge, but feels despite the European pedigree of their opponents, they had identified weaknesses in their side.

“They have strengths, they have some good individual players, but they also have weaknesses, I think we’ll be competitive. If we can survive the heat thing, we’ll be very competitive I hope.”

King also singled out the Reds faithful for particular praise, with a number of fans having made the arduous journey to Slovenia, which took the squad over 12 hours of travel between air and road.

“You know when you’re out there playing and you see groups, the Irish flags, the Shelbourne flag, that definitely gives players a boost and encourages them to keep going in what will definitely be difficult circumstances and difficult opponents.”

A native of Glasgow, Scotland, Mr. Dunbar will work closely with CEO Dave O’Connor and the Board, in a multi faceted role that encompasses football operations, strategic development and marketing. Mr. Dunbar has joined the Reds from Bundesliga club FC Union Berlin where he served as Digital Media Manager.

During a five year spell in Germany, Ross occupied a senior communications role in the Berlin based club with a focus on international affairs. He played a central role in the club’s digital strategy and helped grow the brand’s social footprint.

With a media and communications background, Ross has worked with Deutsche Welle, Fox Sports and ESPN, and has also spent a number of years as part of the scouting team at SV Ried in Austria.

Ross Dunbar, Deputy CEO Shelbourne FC said: “Shelbourne is a historic football club in Ireland and it is great to see the Reds back competing in the top flight of the League of Ireland. After my first visit to Tolka Park in June this year, I was immediately hooked. It’s a special place and hopefully we can add more memories to Tolka’s history. Team news | Shelbourne v Drogheda United, Head in the Game Park, 7:45pm, Friday 12th of August

Shelbourne Head Coach Damien Duff has no fresh injury concerns ahead of Friday’s trip to Head In The Game Park to face Drogheda United.

The last time the Reds were in SSE Airtricity League action was July 22, when they defeated UCD 2-0 away from home.

The visit of St Patrick’s Athletic to Tolka Park last Sunday was cancelled on Friday, with the Saints failing to fulfil the fixture owing to travel issues.

In team news, Jad Hakiki is closing in on a return to action, the young midfielder is managing his load and did some light training this week having not featured since the 3-1 win over Finn Harps at Tolka Park on July 8th.

The 18 year-old is recovering from a minor injury and also battled a bug in recent weeks. Mark Coyle is stepping up his road to recovery, but the clash with Drogheda United will come too soon for the midfielder.

Dan Hawkins also remains sidelined with injury. Sean McSweeney has been released. New signing Matty Smith, who made a deadline day switch from Derry City, made an instant impact in the 3-0 win over Bray Wanderers in the first round of the FAI Cup.

A second half substitute, the Scottish attacker registered a clever assist for Jack Moylan on what was a perfect debut.

Duff told Shelbournefc.ie: “Matty has been brilliant, he settled well with the lads and the week’s training will stand to him. He knows Shane Griffin from his time at Pats, he knows what we’re about here.

“I told Matty when he signed, I’ll never put him under pressure for goals and assists, I want to see energy, work rate and pressing from him, when we don’t have the ball, pressure opponents and defend from the front.

“I was happy with Matty’s contribution in Bray, he showed his quality and managed to get that assist.”

Drogheda United are 8th place in the table, and have recorded 1 win in their last 5 outings, which came courtesy of a 5-1 demolition of Athlone Town in the FAI Cup.

Duff said: “It’ll be a tough game, they’re a decent side, nobody waltzes out of their place with 3 points easily. We have to work hard and earn the right to compete against them.

“They’ll want a response from their last game, they’ll want to react positively to that defeat, maybe there’ll be some players with a point to prove, there’s a few ex-Shels lads at the club, they might want to prove me wrong for letting them go, we know they’ll be up for it, and we have to match that.

“We’ve trained well this week, in testing conditions, the heat has been tough on the players. We know Drogheda will bring an intensity and we’ll need to be ready for that.

Conor Kane returns to face his former club, having moved to Shels from the Drogs for the start of this season. Duff was keen to point out what a positive impact the defender has made since arriving at Tolka Park: “He’s been brilliant for us, his stats, everything he does is top of the pile.

“It’s probably the hardest job in world football, you’re playing two positions, full back and winger. Conor has been a top performer, he deserves a lot of credit.”

Duff also saved particular praise for Shels skipper Luke Byrne who has featured in every game for the Reds this season: “Luke is probably very close to legend status at this club, the fans see and appreciate what he does.

“He’s an amazing presence, a real leader. The middle centre back position suits him down to the ground, he’s a captain through and through, the way he organises and drives standards is what we want from our senior players”
