GALWAY UTD 1 (Owen McCormack 94′)

SHELBOURNE 2 (Adam Evans 55′, James English 58′ [pen] )

Goals from Adam Evans and James English seal three points at Eamonn Deacy Park as Shels continue impressive form!

Shelbourne solidified their spot in the playoffs as two goals in three minutes sealed a valuable three points against a below-par Galway United.

Adam Evans put his side one up on 55 minutes when he got onto a ball over the top before calmly slotting home past Tadgh Ryan, while just two minutes later the Dublin side would double their lead courtesy of a penalty from James English.

Ryan would keep the score respectable when making great saves late on, denying English twice from close range in quick succession before bravely coming out of his goal to stop Jordan Buckley from hitting into an empty net.

The Tribesmen would bag what would be no more than a consolation on 94 minutes when Eoin McCormack blasted home a free from the edge of the box in what was the only highlight on a night to forget for the home side

CABINTEELY 0

Ten-man Cabinteely put a dent in Shelbourne’s promotion aspirations as they battled to a 0-0 draw at Tolka Park.

A momentary rush of blood to the moment cost Kevin Knight a first-half sending-off. The Cabo defender was tripped by Shelbourne’s James English on 26 minutes but his reaction seemed out of proportion and referee Paula Brady brandished a red card.

Shels dominated possession from then on and forced eight corners to Cabinteely’s two, but could not make their numerical advantage count. Dayle Rooney and James English were lively down the flanks for Shels.

Several chances fell to Dayle Rooney in particular but the clinical touch was lacking. Cian Kavanagh smashed a shot just past a post. Rooney and English actually changed wings late on to seek to probe an opening but even this switch failed to deliver a decisive strike.

Shels broke quickly in the 38th minute. English put in a super cross from the right which Rooney met on the half volley but the ball flew just wide. There was almost a dream introduction for second-half substitute Shane Farrell. The Shels man burst into the area but his low shot found the side netting.

The sending-off forced Cabinteely to change their 3-5-2 formation. However the Southsiders’ well-drilled defence coped well and Christian Lotefa, Marty Waters and Luke Clucas worked tirelessly further up the pitch to ensure the second scoreless draw at Tolka Park this season.

SHELBOURNE 1 (Dayle Rooney 75′)

DROGHEDA UTD 1 (Sean Brennan pen 90′)

There was late drama at Tolka Park on Monday afternoon with an injury-time penalty handing Drogheda United a share of the spoils.

Shels looked set to move to within a point of their fellow promotion hopefuls thanks to Dayle Rooney’s fine finish in the 75th minute. However, the home side was reduced to ten men five minutes later for a second bookable offence and Mark Doyle won a penalty after he was hauled down by Dean Delany when put through clean on goal.

A poor first half saw little chances of note but Cian Kavanagh probably should have given the home side the lead after just 10 minutes when James English’s delightful cross found him free in the box.

His header, however, was straight into the keeper’s gloves. The second half more than made up for the first in terms of incident but mostly for the wrong reasons. Byrne’s dismissal left a gap in the middle of the Shels midfield and Drogheda took advantage by playing Doyle through.

He proceeded to round Delany but fell to the ground before he could get a strike away. The visitors were screaming for a penalty but the home team called dive. After consultation with his linesman, the referee pointed to the spot and Brennan duly obliged.

Amongst the fracas, Owen Heary was sent to the stands for protesting the decision.
