Midfielders Stephen Sheerin and Stephen McDonnell, together with striker Michael Duffy have today parted company with Shelbourne FC, by mutual consent.

Stephen Sheerin played for two seasons with the Shelbourne FC Under 19 squad, 2011/12 and 2012/13.

Stephen appeared for the first team while still playing for the U19s and during the 2013 season went on to make 5 league appearances, along with three Leinster Senior Cup and two FAI Cup games. His only senior appearance this season was in the EA Cup game against Bray Wanderers in March.

Stephen McDonnell, formerly of Dundalk FC, Glasgow Celtic and Quay Celtic(Dundalk), joined Shelbourne last November and has made 12 league appearances for the club – ten starts and two as sub.

Michael Duffy (ex-Mervue United & Ballina United) joined Shelbourne at the start of the year and has featured in three league games and one in each of the EA Cup and Leinster Senior Cup.

Manager Johnny McDonnell and the Board of Management thankall three for theircommitment during their time with the club and wish them every success in the future.

On Sunday June 22nd Tolka Park played host to a very special cup final. A Shelbourne XI took on the United Warriors Special Olympics club in the Leo Keogh Cup Final.

The annual game pits a Shelbourne team of fans, club staff, and volunteers against the Special Olympics club in a charity match with all proceeds raised going to the Warriors.

Shelbourne kit man Johnny Watson and Shels fanatic Stephen Fagan came up with the idea over 6 years ago. The prize on offer in the final is the Leo Keogh Cup, the trophy is in memory of Stephen’s cousin who lost his life in a car accident.

Shelbourne 3 (Connolly 4′, Donnelly 32′, McDonagh (p) 41′)

Wexford Youths 0

Report courtesy of extratime.ie

By Niall Farrell

A confident first half performance saw Shelbourne emerge 3-0 winners over Wexford Youths on a night when both sides ended the match with ten men.

Dylan Connolly opened the scoring early on before Jake Donnelly tacked on a second goal – and minutes before half-time William McDonagh scored the third from the penalty spot.

Connolly dominated the match and began with a terrific solo goal. After 4 minutes the Ireland under-19 international scored after a mazy run around several Youths players took him from midfield right up to the Wexford goal. A calm finish cemented a memorable goal, with the ball simply rolled past Graham Doyle.

Complacency seemed to be an issue for Shelbourne after the goal, with Johnny McDonnell’s side giving the ball away carelessly for a period of play. Youths were not able to take advantage though and had to wait nearly a half an hour for their first real shot on target.

Shels eventually found their feet though and again it was Connolly at the heart of a goal. Another mazy run saw him brought down on the edge of the Youths box and amid some confusion the ball bobbled through for Jake Donnelly in the box to supply an easy finish.

Youths picked up two bookings in the first half and it was a sloppy tackle that led to the third goal. Jimmy Dermody brought down Lee Murtagh in the Wexford penalty area. William McDonagh converted the resulting penalty kick, but had to take it twice after the referee ordered his first successful attempt to be retaken.

CJ Browne brought down Lee Murtagh near the Youths box in the opening minutes of the second half, leading to a second yellow card for the Wexford defender. After that Shelbourne tried to spread the play wide and keep the ball in a bid to press home their numerical advantage.

Youths dug in though and were a stubborn defensive unit to break down – meaning that the second half wasn’t much of a spectacle.

Shelbourne’s Lee Murtagh received his marching orders after getting a second yellow card on 72 minutes, and the sides were level again. Wexford’s best chance to pull a goal back came just after that, with Danny Furlong shooting just wide with a low, powerful effort.

The match was a bit less one-sided in the final fifteen minutes, but 3-0 remained the score at full-time.

Directed by Cillian O Conchuir and produced by Shane Tobin, it follows four referees across four sport. Not only does it offer a very rare insight into the profession but with all four mic’d up, we hear the exchanges between referees and players in all four sports.
Men In Black airing dates
Tuesday 24 June 9pm: Alan Kelly(Football)
Wednesday 25 June 9pm: David Coldrick(GAA)
Thursday 26 June 9pm: Barry Kelly (Hurling)
Friday 27 June: Alain Rolland(Rugby)

Alan Kelly

In 2002, then 26, Alan Kelly was nominated and received a FIFA badge becoming the youngest referee in Europe with a badge at that time. He measured success in different ways. He became one of the best League of Ireland referees and refereed in the Champions League, taking charge of Real Madrid in the Bernabeu and before leaving Bayern Munich at the end of 2013. We see him at

“To have a successful career, it is measured against different things. I had set small targets. I made the league of Ireland panel. I had done so at a young age, so the possibilities for me were very much there. I am someone who never looks too far ahead and I don’t take anything for granted. I know it is very clichéd but you are only as good as your last game. Once I became a national league referee and a league of Ireland referee, I was able to set some further goals.

Those were refereeing an FAI Cup final, making it onto the international list of referees, and then looking further afield, to progress as much as possible through the FIFA list ultimately to referee in the Champions League and then onto a major Championships. So I’ve been very lucky to have achieved all of the goals I had set myself except for refereeing in a Major championship.”

“Its not often you get to referee in front of 50,000. The guys in England have that on a weekly basis and you get a lot of experience refereeing in front of big crowds every week,” says Alan Kelly of refereeing Celtic v Liverpool at the Aviva. He talks about his own growth in UEFA and he then talks about how it stalled on one decision as he refereed Real Madrid and Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League. But he picked himself up and at the end of the documentary we see him leaving for the United States to take up a full-time position in the MLS. “Inever really looked at refereeing as a job, it was always a passion, pass-time or hobby as it started out. But now it’s going to be my job and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Shelbourne will play Ipswich Town and Bradford City at Tolka Park during July.

Ipswich Town will visit on Saturday July 12th, when the kick-off will be 3pm.

The ‘Tractor Boys’ visited Tolka Park a year ago – on July 6th 2013 – and went away with a win – thanks to two goals from Waterford’s Daryl Murphy (who, incidentally collected his 11th international cap recently, in the game against Turkey, but missed out on the USA trip, returning to Portman Road, following a thigh injury received while with Martin O’Neill’s squad).

Ipswich Tickets are available online by clickingHERE.

Bradford City will be guests on Saturday, July 19th. Again, the kick-off is set for 3pm.

Bradford (or the Bantams) ended up in mid-table in the Sky Bet League 1 in the season just gone.

Hopefully, Bradford will include new signing Alan Sheehan (an attacking full-back) who would be returning to the city of his birth – and his youth football, having played with Belvedere FC. Alan has played at Under 21 level for the Republic of Ireland.

Dublin born Mark Yeates – who is the son of former Shelbourne star, Stephen (1984-88) – and Co. Donegal born Carl McHugh (who had a loan spell at Dundalk in 2011) are two members of the 2013-14 side.

Bradford Tickets are available online by clickingHERE.
