Shelbourne 0

Bradford City 4 [Clarke 2, Sheehan, De Vita]

REPORT courtesy of GOAL.com

by James Hopper

The League One side finished their tour of Ireland on a high-note as they outclassed a youthful Shelbourne outfit

A Billy Clarke double and goals from Alan Sheehan and Raffaele De Vita ensured Bradford ended their week-long stay in Ireland with a comfortable win.

Bradford manager, Phil Parkinson, will have been pleased with his side’s efforts despite coming up against a youthful Shelbourne starting XI as they continue preparations for the start of their League One campaign.

The visitors opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Sheehan’s cross struck the hand of Shelbourne captain Willo McDonagh. Sheehan struck the resulting penalty past Jack Brady to score his first goal for the club since signing from Notts County on a free transfer.

The Bantams doubled their lead midway through the first-half as Clarke expertly finished after being put through by Dublin-born midfielder Mark Yeates. However, there were suggestions that Shelbourne should have been awarded a free-kick moments earlier.

Summer signing Clarke scored his second of the afternoon early in the second-half as he produced a wonderful finish from 25 yards out. Along with Clarke, manager Phil Parkinson fielded five out of his seven summer signings in what was an encouraging display.

Bradford added a well deserved fourth goal with less than 15 minutes remaining as the out-of-contract De Vita fired a low strike across goal to compound the Irish side’s misery.

Phil Parkinson and his squad return to the UK this evening with less than three weeks before the start of the League One season. Meanwhile, Shelbourne’s first team will look to move to the top of the First Division table with a win over Shamrock Rovers B on Sunday afternoon.

THE LEO KEOGH MEMORIAL CUP – Tolka Park June 22nd 2014

The excitement was palpable, as Captains Stephen Fagan (United Warriors) and Karl Watson (Shelbourne X1 Staff/Volunteers) led their teams out in the brilliant Tolka sunshine , and the most eagerly awaited match in the Warriors calendar kicked off, under the watchful eye of Referee, Shay Weafer.

The Shels team added strength this year, employing the talents of Joe Casey, Niall Fitzmaurice (both yellowed carded!) and Aidan Hughes who must have run a marathon on the pitch.

The game was highly entertaining, with perhaps some dubious interpretations of the rules, but above all played in great sporting spirit. The first half ended with the now legendary Johnny Watson taking off his jersey, although not in celebration this time, but when red carded.

The second half saw Shay and Johnny switch roles, as Shelbourne hoped Shay’s superior agility outfield and Johnny’s expert knowledge of the beautiful game would be to their advantage! However it did not quite work out as planned. The game ended in a six all draw and thus the infamous penalty shoot-out ensued. The significantly smaller goal posts were challenging (another ploy to gain advantage) as many shots were either saved or shot wide. Even our Captain and top penalty taker saw his record of no penalty misses come to an end. However it was smiles all round for the eventual winners – The Warriors as they lifted the Leo Keogh Memorial Cup.

The athletes, coaches and all at United Warriors Special Olympics Club wish to thank most sincerely Joe Casey and the Board for affording us the opportunity of playing in Tolka Park. To Karl Phillips our PA Announcer, Robert Keogh for brilliant photography, The Shelbourne Staff /Volunteers Team for a great game. Special thanks to Darren Cleary from FM104 for the interviews and creating a radio piece which really captured the very essence of this game and why it is so special , not only to the teams, but to the Keogh / Fagan families.

We look forward to the return match in Rathcoole and other joint ventures in the future.

Thank You once again.

Mary Fagan Tony Rooney
