Waterford United 0

Shelbourne 1 (Willo McDonagh)

(Report with thanks to theLOIBLOG)

by David Pheasey

After a turbulent week on the banks of the river Suir, Waterford United welcomed league leaders, Shelbourne to the RSC. A 77th minute goal fromWillo McDonaghwas enough for Shelbourne to steal all three points, having withstood everything Tommy Griffins men could throw at them.

The Blues could have taken the lead on two minutes. Paddy Barrett made a run down the right wing, but was taken down close to the touch line. The ball was whipped in but no Blues player could make significant contact, the ball rolling past Greg Murray’s goal. Not long later the Blues created another scoring opportunity. Vinny Sullivan and Doherty linking well, the Waterford skipper saw his tame shot smothered by Murray.

Paddy Barrett could have seen himself enter the referees notebook on five minutes, after the full back bundled over Lee Murtagh in the Waterford box. The home side were quick to break, and Brain Nolan thought he was through until a superb tackle by the Shelbourne centre back stopped the midfielder in his tracks.

Jack Doherty should have opened the scoring on fourteen minutes. The loan signing firing over from six yards, after Philip Drohan split the Shels back four. The Blues saw a shot from long range turned onto the upright after a great save from Murray.

Shels first chance of the game on twenty five minutes. Darren Tinnelly broke down the week after a Jack Doherty pass went astray. Tinnelly squared the ball for Murtagh who thought he had scored, only for a fantastic tackle from Whittle. The Blues broke down the other end, but Doherty saw his shot easily collected by Greg Murray.

The Blues picked up the second half where they left the first. O’Connor seeing a his shot saved by Murray in the Shelbourne goal. The Shels shot stopper keeping his side in it. Drohan was next to try his luck and was unlucky not to break the deadlock. The winger saw his shot deflected wide of the visitors goal.

The home side were nearly on target a minute later. Drohan feeding the ball to Vinny Sullivan who hit his shot low and hard, but was well held by Murray in the Shelbourne goal.

Shelbourne were next to attack, and earned a corner. The initial ball was headed as far as Garret Coughlan who saw his shot blocked by Barrett. Shels floated the ball in once again, but Kevin Burns claimed it confidently in front of a very vocal home support.

Kevin O’ Connor was unlucky not to score eleven minutes later. After a well delivered corner kick, the youngster couldn’t get the ball away from his feet. The Blues not able to find away past the Shels back four.

Paddy Barrett was next to tee up. His shot from distance caused no problems for Murray who could see it all the way. The Blues continued to apply pressure. Shels, broke and earned a corner on the Old Stand side. The ball was floated in high and went straight out of play.

It was Shelbourne who scored the first on 77 minutes. A well hit corner by Hand was guided to the back of the Waterford net by Willo McDonagh,McDonagh pealing away to celebrate a crucial goal in this match. Kynan Rocks replace Murray just after the goal as the Blues went in search of a goal.

Vinny Sullivan should have drawn the game level on 82 minutes. Paddy Barrett drove forward shaking off his man well. The ex Dundee player found Sullivan in the six yard box but the striker, who also spent some time in Scotland, scuffed his shot. The Blues were beginning to rue the missed chances.

The visitors could have made in two on 88 minutes. Coughlan unable to connect with the ball. The resulting corner was taken short, Coughlan running into the Blues box, but he was brilliantly stopped by a strong Gavin Kavanagh tackle.

Neither side looked like scoring after that. A well taken Shelbourne goal enough to see the visitors return to the capital with all three points.
