CABINTEELY FC 0

SHELBOURNE 1 (Hughes pen)

Report courtesy of extratime.ie

by Fran Reilly

A first half penalty by Philly Hughes was the difference as Shelbourne scraped a 1-0 victory over Cabinteely to take all three points at Stradbrook on Friday night.

Hughes’ first competitive Shelbourne goal since 2012, and his first strike in the First Division since 2011, was enough to earn Shels their third 1-0 win on the bounce in all competitions and keep them joint top of the table alongside Finn Harps and Athlone Town with seven points.

Though both sides had chances, neither could find the net from open play with Cabinteely ultimately failing to breach a Reds rearguard that has yet to concede a goal in the 2015 campaign. It was the Southsiders’ first home defeat of the season and their second in succession following last week’s 2-0 loss to Finn Harps in Ballybofey.

The match started five minutes late due to an issue with one of the nets, and the late kick-off was only five minutes old when referee Michael O’Connor had a major decision to make.

A Jake Donnelly delivery into the six yard box came off Reds midfielder Craig Walsh, and with Cabo ‘keeper Evan Whelan scrambling backwards to keep the ball out, Walsh joined the chorus of Shels fans behind the goal screaming that it had crossed the line. O’Connor got it right, though, as Whelan had done well to keep it out.

The much maligned surface of the Stradbrook rugby pitch made it difficult for either side to get the ball down and create, with both teams ultimately resorting to long ball tactics to advance the play further up the pitch and away from their respective danger zones.

Shelbourne took the lead in the 30th minute through that man Philly Hughes. Walsh drew a clumsy foul in the box to earn the spot-kick and Hughes duly stepped up to convert his first league goal since netting a late consolation for Drogheda United in a 3-2 defeat to Shamrock Rovers in April 2014.

It was also Hughes’132nd league goal in League of Ireland history, moving him up to joint15th in the all-time scoring charts alongside Hoops legend and former Republic of Ireland international Mick Leech.

Cabinteely fought to get back into the game, with Shane O’Neill just failing to get onto the end of a Kevin Knight cross from the left-wing just before half-time. O’Neill had an even better chance to pull his side level just past the hour mark. A ball over the top saw him find space behind the Shels backline, but instead of bringing the ball forward, O’Neill took on the half volley from 30 yards which never troubled Reds goalkeeper Greg Murray.

In the end, Shels were very much indebted to Murray for the win as he made a couple of key interventions over the course of the game to preserve Shels’ clean sheet record, including a one-on-one save from Ger Pender with only nine minutes remaining. The striker had been played through by O’Neill but Murray came flying out to save the well struck low effort with his legs.

Cabinteely began piling bodies forward in search of an equaliser, but it was Reds substitute Mark Sandford who had a late, late chance in stoppage time to finish the game off when he was played through from midfield. The striker seemed to do everything right, maintaining his composure and waiting until the last possible second for the ‘keeper to go down, but his finish was weak and Whelan was able to save with his trailing leg to keep the score at 1-0.

Ultimately, Kevin Doherty will say his side were worth the slender victory, while Eddie Gormley will feel aggrieved that Cabo didn’t at least get a point from a game in which his centre-back Victor Ekanem was the dominant performer from both sides – the 26 year old Nigerian didn’t lose a physical battle in the air or on the ground all night, though he did pick up a silly booking for throwing the ball away in frustration at a decision given against his side.

Cabinteely FC: Evan Whelan, Victor Ekanem, Daniel Campbell, Lloyd Cairns (Conor Foley 86′), Robert Maloney, Evan Finnegan, Jordan Buckley, Aaron Brilly (John McKeown 73′), Kevin Knight, Shane O’Neill, Ger Pender.

Susbtitutes not used: Gavin Fahy, Shane Fagan, Bobinel Mazono, Tyrone McNelis, Eoin O’Sullivan.

Shelbourne: Greg Murray, Daire Doyle, Evan Osam, Ryan Robinson, Sean Heaney, Jake Donnelly, Alan Kehoe (Conor Earley 79′), Craig Walsh, Philip Hughes (Mark Sandford 61′), Colm Crowe, Alan O’Sullivan.

Cabinteely v Shelbourne

SSE Airtricity League – Division One

Stradbrook – Friday, March 20th – KO 7.45pm

Shelbourne travel to Stradbrook on Friday night, for their first meeting with league newcomers, Cabinteely, in Division One of the SSE Airtricity League. Kick-off at the South Dublin venue is 7.45pm.

Cabinteely raised a few eyebrows with their results since joining the league – a first series win over many people’s tip for promotion this season, Wexford Youths, courtesy of the only goal of the game from John McKeown, just before half-time. This was followed up by the newcomers knocking UCD out of the EA Sports Cup with a late goal. Last weekend, they took the long journey north to Ballybofey, but came away pointless, losing 2-0 to Finn Harps.

Harps were first week visitors to Shelbourne, where a draw saw each side come from the fixture with a point. That was followed, with Shelbourne knocking Premier Division Drogheda United out of the EA Cup a few days later, Mark Sandford providing the only goal of the game. The Reds took three points from the UCD Bowl on Friday last, this time Sean Heaney providing the only goal.

Shelbourne manager Kevin Doherty on the win over UCD last weekend “I was delighted with the win at UCD. Once we settled into the game, we played well, creating chances and would have been ahead earlier in the game were it not for some good goalkeeping by their ‘keeper. Sean [Heaney] took his goal well from Jake’s [Donnelly] corner kick and we could have doubled the score close to the end”

On Friday’s game with Cabinteely: “We have watched Cabinteely and know it will not be easy. We will prepare well and approach the game as any other”

Shelbourne will be without Simon Dixon and Paul Andrews (both of whom will be absent for some weeks following head injuries received in the Finn Harps game) and Adam O’Connor, who has picked up an ankle injury. Craig Walsh is doubtful, having picked up a knock and will be assessed closer to match time, as will Evan Osam, who picked up a knock on duty with the Leinster FA team in Germany.

There are no suspensions this week.

Congratulations to Sean Heaney on his call-up to Paul Doolin’s Ireland Under 19s. He is one of only two home-based players in the squad.

Sean, along with Jamie McGrath from St.Patrick’s Athletic are the sole representatives of the SSE Airtricity League namedin the squad for the forthcoming UEFA U19 Championships Elite Qualifying Round.

McGrath and Heaney are the only Airtricity League players in the 17-man panel, which also includes former Mervue United and Galway United striker Ryan Manning, currently at Queens Park Rangers. One more player will be added to the squad as West Brom defender Shaun Donnellan misses out through injury.

Pat’s midfielder McGrath recently came to prominence when thesecondof his two goals in a 6-0 thrashing of Azerbaijan in a friendly at Tallaght Stadium did the rounds online, while on loan Shamrock Rovers defender Sean Heaney has started in Shels’ first three competitive games this season – with the Reds keeping cleansheets in all three. Heaney also netted his first goal for Kevin Doherty’s side in a1-0win over UCD at Belfield (attached picture by Maurice Frazer)

Doolin’s side will travel to Germany for the Elite Phase which will take place between March 26 and 31. The Boys in Green face the Czech Republic on the opening day, before meeting their German hosts onMarch 28. Three days later, they wrap up their group fixtures with a game against Slovakia.

Only the group winners in the Elite Phase will reach the eight team tournament in July, with Greece qualifying automatically as hosts. Having come through the first round of qualification unbeaten – the Republic of Ireland hosted the first group stage in Wexford and Waterford, and finished second to Switzerland on goal-difference – Doolin believes his players should have no fear going to the home of the current u19 European champions.

“The players have every right to feel they can go there and do well. They have scored 21 goals and conceded six in ten games. They are an excellent group of players,” Doolin told theFAI website.

“All of the teams we play here will be strong but this season we’ve improved game after game. We expected to get out of the first phase and we did so playing good attacking football. The players have improved no end since the first game.”

Republic of Ireland u19 squad:

Liam Bossin (Anderlecht), Harry Doherty (Brighton & Hove Albion), Des Hutchinson (Brighton & Hove Albion), Jack Hallahan (West Bromwich Albion), Ryan Manning (Queens Park Rangers), Reece Grego-Cox (Queens Park Rangers), Connor Dimaio (Sheffield United), Joel Coustrain (Sheffield United), Noe Baba (Fulham), Fiacre Kelleher (Celtic), Kevin Toner (Aston Villa), Bobby Moseley (Birmingham City), Harry Charsley (Everton), Josh Cullen (West Ham United), Eoghan Stokes (Leeds United), Sean Heaney (Shelbourne), Jamie McGrath (St Patricks Athletic).

UCD 0

SHELBOURNE 1 (Heaney)

Report courtesy of extratime.ie

by Josh Dolan

Shelbourne gained their first three points of the 2015 SSE Airtricity League First Division at The UCD Bowl on Friday night after an entertaining encounter with promotion rivals UCD.

Sean Heaney’s76th minute header proved the difference as, despite a lot of positive play from Collie O’Neill’s young side, Kevin Doherty’s outfit came out on top.

The home side had the first chance of the game after just three minutes, when midfielder Gary O’Neill latched onto a loose ball before firing over Greg Murray’s cross-bar.

O’Neill had another opportunity to put The Students ahead five minutes later, as some constructive play from Dylan Watts lead to Chris Mulhall being found on the right hand-side.

Mulhall then found O’Neill, but his effort was well matched by Murray at the near post.

It was chances-a-plenty in the opening period and Shels had one of their own on nine minutes, as ex-Student Craig Walsh found Alan O’Sullivan from the left wing, only for O’Sullivan to fire narrowly wide of Niall Corbet’s post.

The Students could easily have been 1-0 up on 17 minutes but Jamie Doyle’s effort at the back post was palmed away to safety by Murray. At the other end, Gareth Coughlan was one of Shelbourne’s real threats on the night and on 19 minutes he found himself in space 20 yards from goal, only to see his shot go inches wide.

Coughlan was involved again a couple of minutes later, as The Students were almost caught out when Shels captain Walsh latched onto a poor pass from Ryan McLaughlin, before switching the ball to Coughlan, who saw his effort pushed away by Corbet.

Chances continued to fall Coughlan’s way and he wasn’t far away from giving the North Dublin side the lead just before the half hour mark, as he latched onto a poor UCD clearance, before firing a shot into the side-netting.

The half got even more entertaining as the chances kept coming. Craig Walsh became the latest player to try his luck after 32 minutes, as his long range effort, which was deflected towards goal, needed a top drawer save from Corbet to keep the teams on level terms.

The second half started a little bit slower than the first, but there was a chance for the home side’s Conor Cannon seven minutes into the half, as he latched onto a loose ball but his shot was easily dealt with. Coughlan was again involved for Shels on 54 minutes as he raced clear of the UCD rear-guard, but as he went to round Corbet, he lost his bearings and dragged the ball well wide of the goal.

Centre-half Maxim Kougoun made his league debut for The Students on Friday evening and despite being only 18, the former Cherry Orchard youth was a commanding presence. His efforts were typified just after the hour mark, when he put his body on the line to clear a Daire Doyle cross when striker Mark Sandford was lurking behind him.

On 67 minutes, Shels ‘keeper Murray was again called into action, as a loose ball fell to UCD’s Doyle on the edge of the box, but the clean sheet remained intact thanks to another save. The only goal of the game came with 14 minutes to go as Sean Heaney, who was unmarked at the far post, rose highest to head Jake Donnelly’s corner to the net.

UCD’s Doyle had a handful of chances on the night, his last coming on 79 minutes, as he saw his powerful volley palmed away to safety by Murray.

Shelbourne had a great chance to seal it with six minutes to go, as Donnelly’s free kick from 18 yards deflected to fellow midfielder O’Sullivan, but he slid his effort narrowly off target.

UCD refused to lie down and substitute Ryan Swan came close to an equalizer with five minutes to go, as he ran onto a ball from O’Neill, but his effort was well saved by Murray yet again.

UCD v Shelbourne

SSE Airtricity League – Division One

UCD Bowl – Friday, March 13th – KO 7.45pm

The second week of the 2015 SSE Airtricity League sees Shelbourne travel across the city to visit UCD, in the First Division. Kick-off at the UCD Bowl is 7.45pm.

The last meeting of these two sides was in the Leinster Senior Cup this time last year, when victory went to the ‘Students’, winning 3-1 on penalties, the game having finished 2-2 after extra-time. The previous two seasons both were playing in the Premier Division – Shelbourne coming out on top in 2013, winning in three of the four meetings (one in the LSC), while honours were even the previous season, with a win each and a draw.

Things have changed at both clubs this season – each having appointed a new manager, Collie O’Neill at UCD and Kevin Doherty at Shelbourne. Both were assistant managers with their respective clubs last season.

UCD had a great 3-0 win away to Cobh Ramblers in the league last weekend, while Shelbourne drew 0-0 with Finn Harps. In the first round of the EA Sports Cup earlier this week, Shelbourne saw off Premier Division Drogheda United 1-0 at United Park, while UCD lost out to Cabinteely FC, who scored the only goal of the game deep into ‘lost’ time.

Kevin Doherty on Tuesday’s game. “I was very happy with the way the lads played on Tuesday night, passing the ball well, the way we like to, and creating a number of good chances – one of which was converted by Mark [Sandford] . We were without a number of established players, but those who came in, certainly didn’t let us down.

On Friday’s game with UCD “We’ll still be without a number of players, but I’m happy that we can go to Belfield and can build on Tuesday’s result

Shelbourne go into Friday’s game without Simon Dixon and Paul Andrews (both of whom will be absent for some weeks following head injuries received in the Finn Harps game) and Dylan McGlade, whose ankle injury has still not cleared up. A number of players picked up knocks in Tuesday’s EA Cup game – Daire Doyle, Jake Donnelly, Jordan Keegan – while some are still feeling the effects of the ‘bug’ which affected the club over the past week – Adam O’Connor and Colm Crowe among them. All will be assessed on Thursday night, but are rated doubtful.

There are no suspensions this week.
