UCD v Shelbourne

SSE Airtricity League – Division One

UCD Bowl – Friday, March 13th – KO 7.45pm

The second week of the 2015 SSE Airtricity League sees Shelbourne travel across the city to visit UCD, in the First Division. Kick-off at the UCD Bowl is 7.45pm.

The last meeting of these two sides was in the Leinster Senior Cup this time last year, when victory went to the ‘Students’, winning 3-1 on penalties, the game having finished 2-2 after extra-time. The previous two seasons both were playing in the Premier Division – Shelbourne coming out on top in 2013, winning in three of the four meetings (one in the LSC), while honours were even the previous season, with a win each and a draw.

Things have changed at both clubs this season – each having appointed a new manager, Collie O’Neill at UCD and Kevin Doherty at Shelbourne. Both were assistant managers with their respective clubs last season.

UCD had a great 3-0 win away to Cobh Ramblers in the league last weekend, while Shelbourne drew 0-0 with Finn Harps. In the first round of the EA Sports Cup earlier this week, Shelbourne saw off Premier Division Drogheda United 1-0 at United Park, while UCD lost out to Cabinteely FC, who scored the only goal of the game deep into ‘lost’ time.

Kevin Doherty on Tuesday’s game. “I was very happy with the way the lads played on Tuesday night, passing the ball well, the way we like to, and creating a number of good chances – one of which was converted by Mark [Sandford] . We were without a number of established players, but those who came in, certainly didn’t let us down.

On Friday’s game with UCD “We’ll still be without a number of players, but I’m happy that we can go to Belfield and can build on Tuesday’s result

Shelbourne go into Friday’s game without Simon Dixon and Paul Andrews (both of whom will be absent for some weeks following head injuries received in the Finn Harps game) and Dylan McGlade, whose ankle injury has still not cleared up. A number of players picked up knocks in Tuesday’s EA Cup game – Daire Doyle, Jake Donnelly, Jordan Keegan – while some are still feeling the effects of the ‘bug’ which affected the club over the past week – Adam O’Connor and Colm Crowe among them. All will be assessed on Thursday night, but are rated doubtful.

There are no suspensions this week.
