SHELBOURNE 2 (Sandford 9′, Earley 52′)

WEXFORD YOUTHS 4 (Delaney 30′, Keenan 38′, Furlong 60′, Whittle 63′)

Report courtesy of Pundit Arena

by Conor McManus

Technical glitches at Tolka Park were just the icing on the cake on what was an embarrassing night for Shelbourne. Nonetheless, two of the favourites for promotion this season, Shelbourne and Wexford Youths entertained the crowd. It was to be Wexford that came away from this important league clash with all three points after a game that had six goals in it.

The home side got off to a flying start when Gareth Coughlan whipped in across towards the box. The ball met the head of Mark Sandford and looped over the stretching keeper and into the top right hand corner of the net. Then the electrical fairies struck Tolka Park as the floodlights failed and the pitch went dark. The referee suspended play and both teams went back to the dressing rooms.

The game resumed some 30 minutes later. The home proceeded to collapse as the visitors took advantage of the spontaneous break to re group and went on the attack from the off. Shels defender Ryan Robinson nearly gifted the home side the equaliser after he lost the ball to Aidan Keenan on the edge of the box. His effort going just wide of goal. Danny Furlong also had another great chance from a free kick. His effort went inches wide of the goal. Then on the half hour mark, Gary Delaney’s head connected with the ball from a corner. His effort flew past Shelbourne shot-stopper, Greg Murray.

Shelbourne could have gone into the lead not long after. Striker, Sandford was gifted a long ball but he couldn’t get the right first touch on the ball. He tried to play it forward but he scuppered his pass. Efforts went back and forth with Wexford having the best of chances. Their efforts at goal were rewarded on the 38th minute as Furlong made his way up the right hand side of the pitch. He chipped in beautifully from the edge of the box and Keenan was there to meet the ball. His header, like Sandford earlier in the game, looped over a stretching Murray and into the top left hand corner of the goal.

Referee, John McLaughlin must have got caught up in all the excitement happening at Tolka Park. He booked Shels’ Sean Heaney after an elbow on a Youths’ player. Then after consulting the lineman, McLoughlin proceeded to book Ryan Robinson.

The second half, like the previous week, started well for Shelbourne. The side went on the attack from the off and we rewarded for their pressure in the opponent’s half. Conor Early won the ball on the right flank and proceeded to dribble his way around numerous Wexford players and towards the centre of the box. From there he struck the ball sweet and low past Doyle.

The momentum was to stop eight minutes later. Craig Walsh was deemed to have brought down a player in the box. Danny Furlong fired home the spot kick, Greg Murphy guessed the correct way but he couldn’t get a hand to it. The net had not even settled from the penalty when Wexford’s Conor Whittle fired home low and long into the bottom right hand corner to extend the visitor’s lead.

Shelbourne seemed to pick up the pace again when Philly Hughes was brought on. The home side could have easily got a goal back but not for the woodwork. Conor Early’s great strike struck the crossbar and bounced off. Just seconds later, Early seemed to be fouled in the box but the referee just waved play on.

Things got worse for the home side with seven minutes remaining. Defender Ryan Robinson, went late into a tackle. He knew straight away his game was over even before the referee pulled out the yellow card and quickly followed by the red card.

Shels will now look to bounce back in their next fixture, an away trip on Saturday week to St. Colman’s Park to face Cobh Ramblers. Meanwhile, Wexford Youths will be at home for their next game, against Finn Harps, also on Saturday week.

DUNDALK 1 (Mountney 11′)

SHELBOURNE 0

Report courtesy of sseairtricityleague.ie

Dundalk got their defence of the EA Sports Cup off to a winning start with John Mountney’s cracker enough to see off Shelbourne at Oriel Park.

The cup holders, who welcomed captain Stephen O’Donnell back from injury, dominated the first half but went in at the break with just a single goal to show for their dominance.

It came in the 13th minute when Mountney, who saw a shot fly wide six minutes earlier, took Kurtis Byrne’s crossfield pass down with his right foot before driving a sweetly struck left footed missile past Shels goalkeeper, Jack Brady from 20-yards.

Stephen Kenny named five teenagers in his starting XI and their enthusiasm was a joy to watch. Of those five, Ciaran O’Connor, his younger brother, Michael and Georgie Poynton were all heavily involved in Dundalk’s attacking play.

Shels boss Kevin Doherty, who started with four debutantes in his team, watched his side get pinned back for much of the game and Shane Grimes saw a left footed shot beaten away by Brady in the 21st minute before Byrne and Mountney both went close from distance.

Poynton was then denied by another good Brady stop with Byrne’s follow up deflected wide. Michael O’Connor and centre-back Paddy Barrett also tried their luck before the break but Brady was able to wave both efforts away.

The second half continued in the same vein with Byrne denied by the young Shels goalkeeper after some neat build up play by Michael O’Connor. The 17-year-old was busy again in the 57th minute, sliding Grimes in on the left. He picked out Ciaran O’Connor but his goalbound shot was charged down by Ryan Robinson.

Dundalk’s failure to add a second almost came back to bite them just past the hour mark when former Lilywhite Jordan Keegan found himself with the full goal to aim at from 18-yards but his right footed effort posed no danger to Gabriel Sava.

Kenny introduced first team regular Darren Meenan in the 71st minute and he was quickly into action, setting up another teen – Anton Reilly – but he blazed over with better options in the middle.

The elusive second goal should have arrived with five minutes to go. Ciaran O’Connor picked the pocket of Darragh Gannon on the left before driving into the box and teeing up Grimes but his strike was deflected wide.

O’Connor’s header, from Meenan’s corner, was then hacked off the line but it mattered little as Dundalk saw the game out comfortably to progress to the quarter finals.

Dundalk: Gabriel Sava, Stephen O’Donnell, John Mountney, Kurtis Byrne, Shane Grimes, Paddy Barrett, Anton Reilly, Ciaran O’Connor, Georgie Poynton, Paul Finnegan, Michael O’Connor (Darragh Meenan 70′).

Subs not used: Carlton Ubaezuono, Alex Barry, Garreth Craven, Calvin Murphy, Ben Kelly.

Shelbourne: Jack Brady, Darragh Gannon, Alan Kehoe (Evan Osam 54′), Ryan Robinson, Adam O’Connor, Jake Donnelly, Aaron Robinson (Mark Sandford 70′), Manuel Rodriguez, Alan O’Sullivan, Jordan Keegan, Conor Earley.

As you know, those wonderful people on the Bar Committee of the Tolka Park Bar ran a raffle for Chocolate Footballs at Easter – all profits going to the Fooball Club.

Originally there were two Chocolate Footballs being raffled – one inscribed with Shelbourne FC and one with Dublin.

There was so much interest that two extra footballs were added to the draw – making four in total.

It will be remembered that the winning number in the raffle for each ball (each raffle being confined to forty-five tickets 1 – 45) was to be the number on the ‘bonus ball’ for the main lotto draw on Saturday night. So shortly after 8pm on Saturday the results were known. They were:-

Shelbourne Ball 1 – Winner: Niall Fitzmaurice

Shelbourne Ball 2 – Winner: Andy (in Bar)

Shelbourne Ball 3 – Winner: Liz O’Loughlin

Dublin GAA Ball : – Winner : Stephen Daly

The winners of three of the footballs donated their prizes to The Children’s Hospital, Temple Street, where they were very gratefully received when delivered there on Sunday morning by Murtagh Daly

Thanks to everyone who purchased tickets for the draws in either the Tolka Park Bar or in the Shelbourne Souvenir Shop at Tolka Park.
