Shelbourne and Waterford United shared the points in an entertaining 3-3 draw at Tolka Park in the Aitricity League First Division on Friday night.
The game was decided by the last touch of the ball with Lee Murtagh heading into his own net from a Waterford United cross. The former Firhouse Clover player will be disappointed especially after creating many chances and demonstrating strong hold-up play at the other end of the pitch throughout the match.
In the end a draw was probably a fair result but the Shelbourne team that went in at half time might disagree. Shelbourne dominated the first half with the exception of the penalty missed by Patrick Barrett midway through.
With only seven minutes on the clock Conor Murphy left the keeper with no chance as he headed a Jordan Keegan corner into the net to give Shelbourne the lead, the earliest goal to be scored in the First Division this season.
Waterford had a chance to get back on terms ten minutes later when William McDonagh caught Vinny Sullivan’s leg as he wound up to shoot. Referee Kevin O’Regan pointed to the spot but Patrick Barrett shot, low to the left, was not enough to beat Greg Murray. Murray cleared the ball but only as far as Barrett but the Shels defense reacted quickly to clear the danger.
Despite some good Waterford pressure, the next chance of note fell to the home side on 26 minutes when Gareth Coughlan put Dylan Connolly through with only Kevin Burns to beat. His shot beat Burns but was denied by the right post. 13 minutes later Connolly made up for that miss as he fired home past the Waterford keeper to give Shelbourne a two-nil lead.
In the dying minutes of the first half Jack Doherty went down after the slightest of contact and looked for a penalty, which was not given. He had been booked a few minutes before that for simulation.
The second half started with a couple of good chances for Lee Murtagh. After miscuing a shot from the edge of the box, Murtagh then headed the ball just over the bar from a Dylan Connolly cross.
Waterford began to come back into the game and on 57 minutes Vinny Sullivan got in behind the Shelbourne defense but his shot rolled harmlessly wide. Moments later Brian Nolan beat the goalkeeper on the left hand side and chipped the ball in but there were two Shelbourne defenders on the line to clear.
Waterford pulled a goal back on 66 minutes when Conor Whittle, picking up a cleared ball from a free kick, curled the ball into the top left corner of the goal from just outside the box.
A couple of minutes later two Waterford substitutions combined to make it 2-2. Conor Meade sent Paul Quilty through with only the keeper to beat. Quilty rounded the keeper and tapped it into the net.
The visitors nearly took the lead for the first time in the game when Greg Murray let the ball bounce in front of him on the left side of the box but luckily for him it bounced into the side netting.
With only five minutes remaining, Shelbourne regained the lead, Stephen McDonnell smashing the ball past Burns into the net. Tolka Park in the past however has been the scene of many a late goal to break Reds fans hearts and Waterford added another to the collection.
The Blues kept Shelbourne under pressure for the remainder of the game. The solid pressure resulted in the own goal from Murtagh which means that Shelbourne dropped their first points of the season.
Shelbourne drop to second place in the table on goal difference behind Finn Harps while Waterford United gain one place due to goal difference. Both teams lost their perfect defensive records this evening but Waterford will be happy to have finally hit the net. Both teams will fancy their odds next week with Waterford United hosting Wexford Youths while Shelbourne will visit Shamrock Rovers B in Tallaght.

Shelbourne v Waterford United
SSE Airtricity League – First Division
Tolka Park – Mar 21st – KO 8.00pm
Shelbourne welcome Waterford United to Tolka Park on Friday night, for their Airtricity League, Div 1, Series 3 game. Kick-Off at Tolka Park is 8pm
Shelbourne go into this game as the only team in the SSE Airtricity League with a 100% record after two series of games – two games, two wins. It was especially pleasing to get a win from Longford last week-end, against a side that would be expected to be in contention for promotion come October. Johnny Mc Donnell gave his views on it by saying “Longford away was already a table topper and with theadded pressure I thought this brought out the character of this group in the way we approached and played the game. We believe we can win home and away with our style of play also the way we closed the game showed maturity in this young group”.
Waterford have has two good draws in the league so far – the first against Finn Harps, (always a difficult place to get a result) and then at home to newcomers Galway FC, already being tipped for promotion. Waterford, like Shelbourne, come into the game without having conceded a goal in the competition.
Ahead of Friday’s game, manager McDonnell says “We have utmost respect for a formidable Waterford team and if we are to get any return we must be at our highest standards. In saying that, that pressure comes from within this group of players and they set the standards required to get results and our last two outings have proved the mental approach is as important as the physical.”
Shelbourne have no suspensions for the game and are relatively free from injury, with John Sullivan, back in training after suffering a thigh strain against Wexford Youths and a possible to get a place in the match-day panel. Robbie Gaul has also in contention after returning to training following a shoulder injury.
Mar 07, 2014 Shelbourne 2 – 0 Wexford Youths (Shels Scorers – Hand , Connolly )

Shelbourne Under 19s
Martin Murray’s Under 19s, play their final game of the season against UCD at the Belfield Bowl on Saturday, March 22nd at 2pm.
While they will need favours from other sides on the last day of the league season if they are to win the title – these things have happened in the past, so it’s important that as many Shelbourne people as possible go out to the Bowl and give them encouragement.

Tie ended UCD 2- 2 Shelbourne (aet)
UCD won on penalties 3 – 1
Shelbourne exited the Leinster Senior Cup at the Belfield Bowl at the hands of UCD.
In what was an entertaining game, played on a very heavily sanded pitch, the sides were level 2-2 after extra time, with ‘College’ winning 3-1 in the penalty shootout.
The game was full of action right from the start, with both side set up to attack.
Shelbourne’s Dylan Cashin scored with an unstoppable shot from outside the penalty area after just six minutes, which was equalised by the ‘students’ Samir Belhout just minutes later with a close in header.
Just minutes later, Shelbourne were awarded a penalty, for which referee Simon Rogers dished out a yellow card to former Shels player, Gareth Matthews. UCD’s keeper Mark McGinley got down low to save the spot kick from Shane Dolan.
The remainder of the half provided plenty of attacks from both sides, missed chances and saves from the keepers.
The second period carried on where the first left off, but it wasn’t until the 73rd minute for a goal, but when it came it was worth waiting on. An incredible first time strike from Shelbourne’s captain for the night, Adam O’Connor flashed past the UCD Keeper to put the Reds 2-1 up. The home side got back on terms, however, with Gary Burke slotting the ball past Nathan Murphy in the Shelbourne goal on 86 minutes. And so we headed for extra time!
With both side looking worn out after the 90 minutes exertion, extra time provided little in the way of excitement or constructive play and so it limped to a penalty shootout.
UCD scored their first, third and fifth penalty (Kavanagh, Clarke and Morrison) while the visitors only success was registered by Brian Gannon (second in running order)
UCD AFC:Mark McGinley, Gareth Matthews, Sean Coyne,Hugh Douglas, Michael Scott, Barry McCabe (James Kavanagh), Colin Crowe, Gary Burke, thomas O’Halloran (Dean Clarke), Dwayne Wilson (Cillian Morrison), Samir Belhout
Shelbourne FC: Nathan Murphy, Simon Dixon, Lee Desmond (Sean McGrane), Adam O’Connor, Ryan Robinson (Brian Gannon), Shane Dolan (Michael Duffy), GarethCoughlan, Dylan Cashin, Matthew Taylor, Jake Donnelly, Darren Tinnelly.

Longford Town 0-1 Shelbourne (Jordan Keegan 11′)
Shelbourne travelled to Strokestown Road on Friday night on their first away game of the season – against Longford Town, in what was already being dubbed a ‘Top of the Table’ clash, both side sharing top position after winning their first game of the season – Shelbourne at home to Wexford Youths and Longford away to Galway FC.
Shelbourne started the game at a high tempo, playing fast fluid football and not allowing the home side settle. Constant attacks on the Longford goal paid off after eleven minutes, with Jordan Keegan scoring his first goal for his new club. Following a rare home attack, thwarted by Shels keeper Greg Murray, the ball was quickly moved up the field to Keegan, who made no mistake in pushing the ball past ex-Shelbourne ‘keeper Chris Bennion.
And the wave of attacks continued to come from the visitors, with several attempts on Bennion’s goal, notably from Lee Murtagh, Keegan again, Dylan Connolly and Conor Murphy. Longford’s efforts to get into the game before half time culminated with a free on the edge of the box, when a strangely out-of-sorts Don Cowan was awarded a free just on the edge of the penalty box, but the attempt came to nothing.
Whatever was said in the dressing-room at half time, by manager Tony Cousins, had the desired effect, as his Longford players certainly showed more interest on their return to the pitch than the showed in the first-half. They immediately went into the attack and sustained the pressure on the Reds defence for most of the second half.
Just four minutes into the second period, Cowan’s speed on the right caught out Philip Hand and he had to resort to fouling the number 11, for which he received a yellow card. The resultant free kick came to nothing. Another free from the left by Lorcan Shannon promised more but Gorman’s header cleared the crossbar, when he should have at least got it on target.
On 67 minutes, Longford had their best chance of the game. David O’Sullivan saw a header come back off the crossbar, the rebound coming to Kevin O’Connor, but his weak shot was easily cleared by the Shels defence.
No matter what was thrown at the Shelbourne defence, Murray’s goal remained intact, sometimes by blanket defence by the Reds, who were prepared to put their bodies on the line for the cause, and sometimes from off-target shooting by the home attack. Shelbourne had a free shortly before the final whistle, which was taken by second half substitution Gareth Coughlan. His curling free bounced in front of Bennion, who initially had difficulty in collecting it ahead of the incoming forwards, but eventually claimed it. This was the last of the attacking action and the Dublin side saw out the three minutes added to become the only Airtricity League side to have a 100% record after just two series of games.
