Shels boss Ian Morris feels the club has “really outdone ourselves given the resources” at hand to build a “strong squad” going into the first season back in the top flight.

The Reds are going into the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division season with a fully fit squad which Morris says he hasn’t had available since he took over in 2018.

Shels travel to Turner’s Cross tomorrow to face Cork City in their first game back in the top flight since 2013 and first league game since September.

“Five months seems like a long time, but the lads have kept themselves ticking over in the off-season which has been a massive plus.

“That’s training as a group too, not just in isolation and has been done off their own back before pre-season started,” he added.

“It’s a really strong squad and everyone has trained this week for the first time ever, so that’s a great catalyst going into the new season,” Morris told shelbournefc.ie.

Morris said he is hoping that the young players in the squad bring “that exuberance, excitement and energy to the team.” A team he feels is full of “varied attributes.”

However, Morris said the team and the backroom staff will need the fans “to get behind us right from the start.”

“The players feel that support from the numbers that are going down with us and that’s massive,” he said.

The Shels boss said he is looking forward to playing a Cork team with “unknown exciting prospects” with players from the UK and our own league.

“We’ve done our video work and background work on them and will be feeding that information to the players. Neale has built a strong squad down there,” he added.
