The History of Shelbourne FC & Tolka Park
Tolka Park is one of Ireland’s most historic football grounds. Found in the suburb of Drumcondra, on the banks of the River Tolka it lies nestled among rows of red-bricked houses. Tolka Park is 102 years old, having played host to its first football match in 1924. Tolka Park has not just been home to Shelbourne FC, but to local sides Home Farm FC and Drumcondra FC before that. Although the stadium was originally hand-built by local volunteers to serve the community, the stadium became a trailblazer for modern football practices In Ireland.

On March 30th, 1953, Tolka Park hosted the first ever floodlit football match in the country, a moment now immortalised with a plaque on the stadium wall. Tolka Park also hosted the first ever European victory for an Irish team in 1962 and was Ireland’s first ever all-seater football stadium. In 1997 Tolka Park was the venue for the first live televised League of Ireland game, and in 2021 for the first live televised Women’s Premier Division game.

A stadium that is in the blood of the local sporting community for over a century, Tolka Park has witnessed boxing matches, circuses, Gold Cup winning horses and many other sporting anomalies. But all along, football has been the true obsession of those who have entered the gates of Tolka Park. Roy Keane has led his Manchester United team out there; Leeds United and Celtic have played there and very recently the might four-time European Champions Ajax Amsterdam have competed against Shelbourne there.

Tolka Park has been the beating heart of Shelbourne FC since 1989. Shelbourne’s women’s team have lifted two league titles there, in 2021 and in 2023. Shelbourne’s men have won 6 Premier Division titles at the historic ground, most recently in 2024, Tolka Park’s centenary year. Combined, Shelbourne have won 17 top-flight domestic titles in their history. And with the ink recently dried on a 250-year lease for Tolka Park to remain the home of Shelbourne FC, there are so many memories now waiting to be made in this very special place that we call home.

We look forward to welcoming supporters of Shelbourne FC Women and the University of North Carolina to Tolka Park for what promises to be a fantastic international friendly fixture.
