SHELBOURNE 4 (Aaron Ashe [pen], Aaron Robinson 2, Ahu Obhakhan)

LONGFORD 1

After the disappointment of Thursday’s defeat, Martin Murray’s Shelbourne U19s were back in action 40 hours later and what a scintillating performance we got.

Martin made four changes hoping to freshen it up and did it that. Straight from the off, they played their tiki taki interchanging play and as early as the 5th minute got their reward, whentheball was laid off by Ashe to skipper Robinson, who ran beyond the defence but was up-ended, with a penalty the result. Aaron Ashe gladly dispatched he ball to the net.

Longford had barely got their breath back when the ball was played to Obhakhan, and with his first touch chipped the keeper from 30 yards to make it2-0 on 11th minute.

Shels were charging forward at every opportunity, with their play starting from keeper Donnelly all the way through the team. It wasn’t too much longer that we had to wait -when on 22nd minutes, after a move starting in their own backline and finishing with Grimes laying off a pass, that Skipper Robinson smashed it to the back off the net.

Further chances were created with Keeley and Ashe having chances cleared of the line, and so Longford were delighted to get in at half time only 3-0 down.

The second half didn’t quiet live up to the first half, with Shels easing off the pedal, being aware of next weekend’s cup game against Cork City and Murray emptied the bench with Mukete, Bekombo, McGrane, Confrey and O’Flynn being brought on, – but before he left the field, Skipper Aaron Robinson added his second (and Shels fourth) with a fantastic move that had fifteen passes put together and Ashe put Robinson in and expertly finished to the back of the net.

The Longford Keeper deserves loads of credit as he stood between Shels running up a bigger score – and the only disappointment was Shels conceding a late goal in the 83rd minute.

It was a pleasure to watch this game today, and to look forward to seeing many of these stars of the future wearing the first team jersey of Shelbourne SOON.
