St. Patrick’s Athletic v Shelbourne

FAI Cup – Round Three

Richmond Park – Friday, August 22nd – KO 7.45pm

A break from football in the First Division of the SSE Airtricity League this week sees Shelbourne travel across town to take on Premier Division Champions for 2013, St. Patrick’s Athletic in Round Three of the FAI Ford Cup at Richmond Park this Friday night. Kick-off is scheduled for 7.45pm.

Shelbourne kept up their quest for promotion to the Premier Division last Friday, by taking a point away from Ferrycarrig Park, courtesy of a 1-1 draw with Wexford Youths, Shels goal being scored by new recruit Alan O’Sullivan. The point from this game took on more significance 24 hours later, when league leaders Longford Town lost out to Galway FC. Shelbourne are now three points behind Longford, with the Midlanders due in Tolka Park in the next round of the league.

Speaking about the Wexford game, Shelbourne manager Johnny McDonnell commented “The most important thing for us last Friday was that we didn’t lose the game. We obviously went to win it, but it was more important that we got something from the game and to keep the team that was behind us in third place at arm’s length, which we did. We can’t control what happened in Longford, but it happened, and we gained a point. Psychologically it has been huge for us. We got out of it with a draw, we didn’t lose, we kept them nine points away from us and we gained a point on Longford.”

In the last round of the FAI Cup, Shelbourne defeated Waterford United with the only goal of the tie, scored by Jordan Keegan. St. Patrick’s Athletic saw off the challenge from St. Patrick’s CY, scoring three times without reply.

Asked about Friday’s game with St. Pat’s, McDonnell and the team are looking forward to it “The Cup is a great week; we do things differently building up to the Cup. It’s a great place to go, a great chance for our players to go to Inchicore. It’s a good test to see where they’re at and what levels they’re at, when the opposition that they’re playing are at a higher level. I have no doubt but that our players can play at the higher level.

It will be a completely different atmosphere. I have no worries about the fellas or their concentration levels.

Dylan [Connolly] will be back [from injury], Willo [McDonagh] should be back around, Gareth [Coughlan] will be back from suspension – the only one missing is Darren [Tinnelly], who is having an operation this week, and we wish him well. We have 24 fellas looking for spots – there’s a great dynamic about the group.”

Shelbourne and St. Pat’s have been drawn together on 12 occasions in the FAI cup. Results are even, each winning six ties (sometimes after replays), but the most important from a Shelbourne point of view, would be the Final of 1996 (which Shels won 2-1 in a replay, after a 1-1 draw) and the latest meeting – in the semi-final of 2011 (Shelbourne winning the replay 3-1 in Richmond, the first game being drawn 1-1)
