Shelbourne v Waterford United

FAI Ford Cup – Round Two

Tolka Park – Fri, June 6th – KO 8.00pm

This weekend sees a break from league action and the start of the FAI Ford Cup campaign for clubs in the SSE Airtricity League. Shelbourne were drawn at home to Waterford United when the draw was made for Round Two on May 11th – just a couple of days after the Dublin side had ground out a 0-1 result on their visit to the RSC in the league. The FAI Ford Cup game will take place at Tolka park on Friday, with an 8.00pm kick-off.

Shelbourne, who still top the league table, lost their first home league game of the season last week-end. While it was expected to be a very close game, – and certainly lived up to expectations in the first half – the home side will not have been happy with their defending in the second half, which gifted the Westerners two goals through some less-than- top class defending leaving the final score 2-4.

While Shelbourne were dropping points at Tolka Park, Waterford were winning their game at the RSC against Cobh Ramblers 4-0. They followed this up with a successful visit to Tallaght Stadium earlier this week, defeating Shamrock Rovers ‘B’ with a Conor Whittle goal in the 87th minute, which was the only goal of the game, which had been brought forward from next week.

So, Waterford will be coming to Dublin on a high for this cup game and Shelbourne will be out to show that last weekend was on one-off and that some frailties shown in last week’s game have been addressed.

Following the Galway defeat, Shelbourne manager Johnny McDonnell gave his thoughts on the game: “that was the best we have played in the first half for a long time, but we can’t defend like that – the set pieces – we just didn’t defend them! I think we defended well individually, the centre halves played well and the full backs are OK, but we just didn’t defend the set pieces.” He continued “We used the game to bring Conor [Murphy] back, to bring Jordan [Keegan] back and that was Robbie Gaul’s first full game all season. Coming into this second set of matches, we knew we’d have injuries and suspensions, we said that if we can stay up around the top of the table, we’d be OK but we need to regroup now and we need get the three points away to Cobh and that would just keep us in it. If we can get our best group of players back for the second half of the season, on our day we can beat anyone – but we need our best players”

On Friday’s game, McDonnell was not giving much away Waterford, like ourselves, have a great tradition in this competition – and after our recent league win down in the RSC, we know that this will be a tough cup tie”

Shelbourne have no suspensions for this game.

Dylan Connolly and Ryan Robinson return after International duty with Paul Doolin’s Under 19s.

On the injury front, John Sullivan misses out again and Willo McDonagh is considered very doubtful.
