SSE Airtricity League – First Division

Eamonn Deacy Park – Fri, April 11th – KO 7.45pm

Shelbourne travel west on Friday night to take on the league’s newest member, Galway FC at Eamonn Deacy Park. Kick-off is at 7.45pm.

Shelbourne went back to the top of the league table following their 2-0 win against Finn Harps at Tolka Park on Friday night last, courtesy of goals from Gareth Coughlan and Keith Quinn (pen) – a first goal of the season for each of them.

Galway themselves had an emphatic win at home to bottom team Cobh Ramblers. This first win of the season lifted the ‘Tribesmen’ to fifth position in the table, a little closer to where most league watchers would have expected them to be.

Following the defeat of Finn Harps last weekend, manager Johnny McDonnell said he was “delighted with the win – especially with the first half. We allowed them to come at us a bit in the second half, which I was not too happy with, but I was delighted with the way we defended, when they did come at us”.

On Friday’s game with Galway, Johnny said “a lot of the players in the league are new to us, including some of the Galway players, and we’ll just have to see how it goes on Friday. We’re happy with our own squad and the way we are trying to play, so we’ll go into Friday’s game the same as the other games so far”.

Being top of the league, unbeaten after five games, Johnny was asked about how he sees this with regard to promotion – “we’ll see how we’re fixed after the first seven games” he said. “We’ll then have seen all the other teams in the division and we’ll have a better idea- but we’re happy with how things have gone so far”.

Shelbourne go into Friday’s game with no suspensions, but they will be without John Sullivan, who is nursing a leg injury.
