Drogheda United v Shelbourne

EA Sports Cup – Round One

United Park – Tuesday, March 10th – KO 7.45pm

Quickly following on from the opening game of the new season, against Finn Harps on Friday night, comes an away fixture to Drogheda United in Round One of the EA Sports Cup. Kick-off at United Park is 7.45pm.

In the weekend fixtures, Shelbourne were held to a 0-0 draw at Tolka Park, while Drogheda United took all three points away from the Carlisle Grounds, courtesy of a Daryl Kavanagh goal, score in the 25th minute.

Since Shelbourne last appeared in the final of the (EA) League Cup in 2006, [losing on penalties to Derry City after a 0-0 draw], their record in this competition has not been great.

2007: Lost in Round One to Bohemians 0-2

2008: Lost out [0-2] to Drogheda United in Round 2, having defeated Sporting Fingal on penalties in Round One.

2009: Again, bowed out in Round 2, this time 4-3 to Bohemians, after seeing-off Dundalk [3-0] in Round One.

2010: Lost out to Monaghan United [1-0] in Round One

2011: Progressed to the Quarter-Final before being defeated [1-2] by Sligo Rovers, having seen off FC Carlow [4-0] in Round One and Bohemians [4-2] in Round Two.

2012: Defeated [1-2] by Bray Wanderers in Round Two, having seen off Mervue United [1-0] in the first round

2013: Bowed out in Round One [1-0] to Dundalk

2014: Again, departed the competition, having been defeated [2-5] by Dundalk

Manager Kevin Doherty will be hoping that this trend can be reversed on Tuesday night.

Shelbourne and Drogheda United have not competed against each other since 2013, when Drogheda won the first of three league games [1-3], with the remaining two fixtures being drawn [2-2] and [0-0].

Following a crazy six minute period in the second half of the game with finn Harps on Friday night, when Shelbourne lost two players, Paul Andrews and Simon Dixon, both join Dylan McGlade (ankle) on the injured list – Paul with a broken nose and Simon having been concussed.

Ryan Robinson, having served a one game suspension in the Harps game should be returning for the Drogheda game, but he is one of three players reporting unwell over the weekend – Ryan Robinson, Adam O’Connor and Craig Walsh – and all three are rated as doubtful.

Suspended: None

Injured: Dylan McGlade, Paul Andrews, Simon Dixon

Doubtful: Ryan Robinson, Adam O’Connor, Craig Walsh
