John Martin Confirmed as Asst Manager

John Martin was, today, confirmed as Kevin Doherty’s Assistant Manager for the coming season.

John Martin joined UCD from Crumlin United in June 1997, staying with ‘College’ until 2004, playing 143 games and scoring 10 times. He has missed most of the 1998/99 season due to injury. During his time with UCD, he helped them win the FAI Super Cup in 2000.

Hemoved to Longford Town for the 2004 season, following UCD’s relegation to Division One. He was with Longford Town from 2004 to July 2007. While he was with Longford Town, he won winners medals in both the FAI Cup and the League Cup in 2004. He played in 83 games scoring on six occasions.

In July 2007, he joined manager Pat Scully at Shamrock Rovers. Numerous injury concerns in 2007 and 2008 curtailed his appearances (21) with the ‘Hoops’ and resulted in serious hip surgery in May 2008. A recurrence of the injury in training in November 2008 resulted in additional hip surgery in January 2009 and his retirement on medical grounds.

John managed Leixlip Town for two and a half years, during which time the club, theirsenior teams have won seven league and cups including back to back league titles to lead the senior team to the top division of the Leinster Senior League for the first time in the club’s history. the clubalso madethe semi finals of the FAI Intermediate Cup and qualified for the FAI Senior Cup. Prior to joining Leixlip, John managed Maynooth Town

John is DC Pensions manager at Irish Life and Permanent.

John was coach to the PFAI squad which visited Oslo for the FIFPro Winter Tournament in January 2015.
