Cork City v Shelbourne
Airtricity League – Premier Div
Turners Cross – Friday, July 27th
KO 7.45pm
Fifth placed Shelbourne travel south on Friday to play eight placed Cork City in the Airtricity League, Premier Division 20th series of games. Kick-off at Turners Cross is 7.45pm.
Shelbourne were defeated by Drogheda United in Tolka Park last week, when, with virtually the last kick of the game, Gavin Brennan’s cross / shot clipped the bottom of the far upright and ended in the net. Shelbourne had won the two games before that – home to Dundalk 4-0 and away to Bray Wanderers 2-3.
City’s last three games saw them drawing 2-2 at the Showgrounds against league leaders Sligo Rovers, drawing 1-1 with Bohemians at ‘the Cross’ and defeating Bray wanderers 0-3 at the Carlisle.
Shelbourne will be hoping to wipe out the memory of their 4-1 defeat at the hands of City this time last season – which was their biggest losing margin of the whole season. The other two meetings last season ended in a 1-1 draw in May and a 2-1 win for City in October. Things didn’t change much for their first meeting of this season – City winning 2-1, which was their first league win since promotion.
Following last week’s defeat to Drogheda United, Shelbourne manager Alan Mathews could not hide his disappointment, when he spoke with ShelsTV “Very disappointed that we lost the game. We didn’t play particularly well the first half, gave away another soft goal, worked very hard to get a good goal back and I felt we would have pushed on and maybe won the game.”
“We get a player sent off and they scored a fluke in the last minute. But give them credit, they made it hard for us, but when we passed and played we got at them and opened them up. Kevin Dawson was unlucky not to score; Conan [Byrne] could have got another goal.”
Things have improved for Shelbourne on the injury front. Ian Ryan is fit to resume, having missed the last for competitive games and Glenn Cronin is likely to play some part, at least, having been side-lined since Derry at the start of June. There are no new injuries to report.
Stephen Paisley is suspended, having been red-carded against Drogheda, while Barry Clancy returns to action having missed the last three games due to a red card against St. Patricks Athletic.
