Bray Wanderers v Shelbourne
FAI Ford Cup – Round Two
Carlisle Grounds – Friday, May 25th
KO 7.05pm
Shelbourne commence on the FAI Ford Cup road on Friday, when they visit Bray Wanderers – a road that they will be hoping will see them in the Aviva Stadium for the second year in a row, in November . Kick-off at the Carlisle Grounds is 7.05pm – the early start necessitated by TV coverage.
Bray and Shelbourne had somewhat different fortunes last weekend – with the difference in points accumulated being just one. On Friday night, Shels travelled to Sligo and were defeated by top of the table Sligo Rovers 3-0. On Monday night, they hosted Bohemians and were once again on the wrong end of the result (1-2), once again a goal in ‘lost’ time being their downfall.
Bray, on the other hand, benefitted from a goal in ‘lost’ time on Friday night – getting the equalising score against St. Patrick’s Athletic in the 93rd minute. Monday night saw a great display from the ‘Seasiders’ fail to gain a division of the spoils, in their game away to Derry City – eventually going down 3-2.
The Cup, however, is a very different competition – how often does league form go out the window? – and both sides will be looking to come out of their first involvement in this year’s competition with a win and progress. At this stage last season, Bray won away to Youghal United (1-3) before going out in the next round to Limerick FC (0-4). Shelbourne defeated Greystones FC (1-3) in May last year – the game being played at the Carlisle Grounds – on their way to the final against Sligo Rovers in the Aviva.
In the last game played at the Carlisle between the two sides, Shelbourne won the Leinster Senior Cup final, in August 2010.
Shelbourne manager, Alan Mathews is hoping to have a full panel to select from on Friday, with exception of John Sullivan who was handed a straight red by referee McKeown in the game v Bohemians on Monday night. Both Sean Byrne and David Cassidy are available following suspension on Monday night. The duo of Lorcan Fitzgerald and Stephen Hurley, who have been missing due to injury for some time, may make an appearance at some stage during the game. All other members of the panel are available for selection.
